Theatre Arts is an elective creative arts course. Students are introduced to all areas of theatre, which includes elements of both performance and production. Specific areas of study include acting, directing, improvisation, set design, costume design, make-up, lighting and sound. Students are evaluated through periodic public performances and portfolio revues.

Improv Comedy is a theatre class that focuses on creative rapid-response exercises and spontaneous dialogue /role play. Students create interesting and creative stories on the spot through listening, reacting, support, and self-discovery.

ADVANCED THEATRE PERFORMANCE [FA200]

Advanced Performance is a theatre class designed to continue the education of students who have successfully completed Theatre Arts. Students in this class will further explore the theatre standards that are specifically performance-based. Areas of study:

THEATRE III [FA300]

Theatre III is a performance class designed to continue the education of students who have successfully completed Theatre Arts and Advanced Theatre Performance. Students in this class will focus specifically on those areas of theatre that interest them as potential professional work or lifelong artistic endeavors. They will then work on those areas in an off-campus setting. (For example, this might include taking an internship with a local theatre company or performing in a community play.) Students in this class will also develop lessons to teach what they know to their classmates and/or other classes. Finally, students in Theatre III will develop a senior project in which they will work with their classmates to create a performance utilizing their specific talents and abilities.

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DESIGN [ES100]

Using full-featured professional computer aided design (CAD) software, students learn the process of product design. They solve design problems as they develop, create, and analyze product models. This course is the first of a series in the national Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program. Prerequisite: Enrollment in Algebra 1

PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING [ES150]

This course is a rigorous study of mathematics and physical science concepts applied to real-world experiences.

Students explore technology systems, design and manufacturing processes in a way that provides meaningful, hands-on experiences in problem-solving, teamwork, and project-based learning. Prerequisite: Introduction to Engineering Design [ES100] or counselor approval, Algebra 1 [MA200], and an introductory science course [SC125 or SC150].

DIGITAL ELECTRONICS [ES250]

Students use computer simulations to learn about the logic of electronics as they design, test, and actually construct circuits and devices. Prerequisites: Introduction to Engineering Design [ES100] or counselor approval, Algebra 1 [MA200], and an introductory science course [SC125 or SC150].

CIVIL ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE [ES300]

Teams of students collaborate on the development of community-based building projects. Using full-featured professional computer aided design (CAD) software, students design a range of buildings and structures.

Prerequisites: Principles of Engineering [ES150] or Digital Electronics [ES250] and Geometry [MA320].

ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT [ES400]

Teams of students, guided by industry mentors, will work together to research, design, and construct a solution to a real-world engineering problem. Prerequisites: Civil Engineering and Architecture [ES300] or Digital Electronics [ES250], Algebra 2 [MA400], and Physics [SC400].

ENGINEERING CO-OPERATIVE/INTERNSHIP [ES900]

Grade Level: 11-12 Year / 1.0 credit

This co-operative is intended to allow students an opportunity to work with professional engineers/architects/technicians who are working on state of the art problems. Students will take the knowledge they have so far learned in the Project Lead the Way courses and apply it in an actual work environment under the leadership of an assigned mentor. Prerequisite: Taken in conjunction with Civil Engineering and Architecture or Engineering Design and Development (junior or senior standing)

ENGINEERING INNOVATIONS [TE450]

Grade Level: 10-12 Year / 1.0 credit

This course will give students the opportunity to design and produce a project which may incorporate robotics, pneumatics, and/or fiber optics. Engineers from local companies will serve as mentors to students enrolled in this course.

The course includes four phases:

Phase 1 – Project Design: Topic research, planning, mechanical drawing, math and physics principles.

Phase 2 – Manufacturing: Manufacturing, testing, problem-solving, and product refinement.

Phases 3 – Public Demonstrations: Presenting and demonstrating products to a variety of audiences. On-going problem-solving, innovation and refinement are expected in this phase.

Phase 4 – Reflection: Formal reflection and goal-setting for the purpose of planning for personal growth in technical knowledge, academic knowledge, collaborative skills, and presentation skills.

CONSUMER AUTO & POWER SYSTEMS [TE115]

Grade Level: 10 – 12 Semester/ 0.5 credit(s)

This course will introduce students to major operating systems of automobiles and power machines. Students will learn life skills to make educated future decisions on purchase, repair, and maintenance of power equipment.

EXPLORING WOODWORKING [TE205]

Grade Level: 9-12 Semester/ 0.5 credit(s)

This one-semester course is designed to teach and develop basic woodworking skills. Hands-on experience in operating machines and woodworking tools is acquired. Students will be exposed to a variety of job opportunities in woodworking and related fields. Prerequisite: None.

INTERMEDIATE WOODWORKING [TE215]

The course contains content designed to challenge the students in designing and building advanced wood pieces using advanced joinery and design concepts. This course is for students who want to advance their skills, have become proficient in safe woodshop practices, and completed Exploring Woodworking. Prerequisite: Exploring Woodworking [TE205]

CONSTRUCTION SKILLS - Level 1 [TE280]

The Construction Skills Level 1 and 2 provides students with an understanding of building construction. Students will develop the skills and knowledge needed to plan, design, select, and construct basic to complex structures.

These courses are aligned to model the construction skills necessary for students to obtain certification or mastery in construction education; preparing students after the four course levels to join an Apprenticeship program. A goal of the course is to reinforce basic math by incorporation of practical application. Students enrolled in the courses will see the purpose of math, and know to use it in their daily life. Each of the construction courses will also incorporate disciplinary skills, as well as the necessary tool manipulative skills.

Equal emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in German. Prerequisite: Students who have not attained an average grade in their required English courses may experience difficulty in the course. Students must have a C or better to be recommended for the next level. Course can not be repeated more than once.

All students will be automatically placed into required courses such as Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Health, and Physical Education. Placement in upper level core subject classes is dependent on test scores and teacher input. Further information regarding each child’s entire schedule for next year will be sent later this spring. The courses offered below are subject to change.

Creative Arts classes are a part of the overall academic experience for students at BDMHS. The classes provide learning experiences in the Cultural and Fine Arts and are included in all students Grade Point Average. Students below grade level in Reading or Math will have the opportunity to improve those skills during a Creative Arts period.

Students will continue building on the string instrument skills they learned in previous years. Members of the class will be expected to rent their own instruments and purchase a music book. There are a limited amount of instruments available for rental through the school, but arrangements must be made prior to the school year.

Students are required to participate in 3 evening concerts a year and receive weekly lessons.

Band 7 (full-year) - Previous instruction required

Chorus 7 (full-year)

Students in this class will continue to develop their musical skills through voice. The repertoire for this level is medium to advanced 3 part harmonies. There are 2 evening concerts a year with attendance being mandatory and a big part of the student’s grade. A strong emphasis is placed on goals and teamwork. Students in 7th grade also have the option of participating in Solo and Ensemble.

Spanish 7 (full-year)

Students will learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language through a blended approach of teacher-led instruction and in-class games/activities. Students will be required to show they have acquired new skills through their homework, in-class work, and assessments. This is the first semester of high school Spanish I. At the completion of 7th grade, students will be expected to take the high school semester I final exam. Students will then go on to take the second semester of high school Spanish I in eighth grade. No prerequisites required.

Art 7A (1st semester) Art 7B (2nd semester)

Students continue to develop their understanding of the elements and principles of design. Projects include drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, fibers, and crafts. Students may take one semester or two semesters of Art.

Introduction to Technology I (Communications & Construction) (1st semester)

Areas of emphasis in Communication Technology will be: CAD, graphics design, scanning and digital photography. Areas of emphasis in Construction Technology will be: architectural design, model, bridge, and tower design. Critical thinking and problem solving activities are incorporated in both areas.

Introduction to Technology II (Manufacturing & Transportation) (2nd semester)

Areas of emphasis in manufacturing will be: Plastics Technology material and processes, including;

thermoforming, vacuum forming, injection molding, and Wood Technology. Areas of emphasis in transportation will be: rocket and glider design. Critical thinking and problem solving activities are incorporated into both areas.

Gateway To Technology 7 (year)

Introduction to pre-engineering for students in areas of design and modeling of transportation vehicles, science and technology, automation and robotics involving energy transfer and machine assembly, the magic of electrons through exploring electronics, and robotic programming.

Students will learn about, analyze, describe, and create original rap music and spoken-word poetry performances.

Areas of focus are rhythm, hip-hop and rap music history, poetic devices, and creation of group interpretive movement.

Spanish 8 (full-year)

Students will learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language and should expect homework, in-class-work, and assessments. This course will run parallel with the high school Spanish I course and students will be expected to take the same high school final exams at the end of each semester. In Spanish I, 8th grade, an average of B or better in Language Arts and/or a STAR score of Proficient or Advanced in Reading is required to take this class. Final student approval and placement rests with school administration.

Art: Drawing from Life (semester)

Students will develop their skills by drawing still-life objects, animals, portraits, buildings, etc. Perspective may also be reviewed. One Art class per semester or two classes with teacher approval.

Art: Printmaking / Intro to Jewelry (semester)

Students will create prints through a variety of techniques. Students will learn basic techniques for jewelry making including using recycled objects. One Art class per semester or two classes with teacher approval.
