T a k a y a (1980) stu d ied the a gric ultural landscape along th e K o m erin g river, which is th e neighbouring m ain s t r e a m to th e Ogan. People th e re classify th e ir lands in to th e six categories, going from higher to lower levels. T h ese a re t a l a n g , p e m a t a n g , lebak p e m a t a n g , lebak t e n g a h a n , lebak d a la m and r a w a - r a w a . T a l a n g is uplan d aw ay from th e m ain river, b u t n o t necessarily suffering from lack of w a te r. T h is te r m is so m e tim e s used by villagers to c h a ra c te rise a ham let located aw ay from t h e village’s m a in residential a rea, even th o u g h th e re are only one or two houses th ere . P e m a t a n g is land along the river b u t n o t subm erged by floods. T h e th ree ca tegories of lebak land are seasonally flooded. R a w a -ra w a is a perennially in u n d a te d p a r t of t h e b ac k sw am p .

T ropica l forest clim ate prevails in South S u m a t r a . B a t u r a j a is located a t an a l t i tu d e of 49 m and m ore t h a n 200 km away from the coast. It is cooler and less h u m id t h a n the a r e a a r o u n d P a le m b a n g . T h e m a x im u m t e m p e r a t u r e is a b o u t 32 degrees C, a n d th e m in im u m 20 degrees C, w ith only small flu c tu a tio n s in th is t e m p e r a t u r e range. T h e a n n u a l to ta l rainfall, in B a t u r a j a , is on average 2693 m m , w ith a s t a n d a r d dev iatio n of 480 m m between 1970 and 1982. D uring the last 13 years, th e re have been th re e years, 1972, 1975 a n d 1977, when t h e annual rainfall was less t h a n 2213 m m (the ave rage m inus one s t a n d a r d dev iatio n ). T h e local people divide a y ear into tw o seasons, m u sim h u jan (rainy season, N ovem ber to m id-M ay) and m usim kering (dry season, m id-M ay to O c to b e r). M ore t h a n 250 m m of rain falls in a m o n th of an av erage rainy season, b u t m o n th ly rainfall drops to 100 to 150 m m in dry seasons. As show n in F ig u re 2-4, t h e re is a fairly high pro b a b ility of no rain in August.
