Level III of the Unconscious is essentially constituted by pragmatic synapses (Se) and subjective synapses (Sa), the function of which is to ‘adjust’ the three types of quantum configuration of non-separability, separation and quantification. Thus the past potentialities of the Systems and Structures of level I and the surplus values of possibility of the semiotic concatenations of level II, bearing the future, find themselves capitalized, put into action, rendered present. The actualization of Effects and the virtualization of Affects cannot be assimilated to mechanical causation or dialectical impli- cation, because their occurrences are indissolubly linked to the contingent,

singular character of the Assemblages that effectuate it. The ‘present’ of schizoanalytic pragmatics doesn’t imply any primacy of a clear, distinct, continuous, rational, capitalistic and symbolically castrated consciousness. The temporal schizzes and the dyschronies generated by fragmented becomings are inscribed in its register in their own right.

We have seen that the function of the tensors that were afferent to synapses was to relay the surplus value of risks and possibilities ‘in waiting’ in the semiotic entities arrived at in level II, and that of the efferent – pragmatic and subjective – tensors was to aggregate these surplus values at the systemic and structural sites of level I.

The ‘canonical’ model of the Assemblage in Figure 2.4 only constitutes a limiting case of schizoanalytic cartography, those ‘on the ground’ neces- sarily putting into play a much greater number of synapses, articulated within a complex network of Assemblages. (This limiting case would be worth going into more thoroughly as such because it represents the ideal type towards which the ensemble of capitalistic productions of subjectivity tend.)

Each synapse can have an indefinite number of valences depending on the number of tensors it puts into play.

Bivalent codings and orderings result from the conjunction of two

afferent tensors of surplus value of possibility. When these have a:

coding (for example, a ‘groundless’ perception of the order of

delirium or hallucination);

ordering (for example, a ‘lived impression’ on an aesthetic, oneiric

or mystical plane).

Trivalent synapses result from the conjunction of two afferent tensors and

one efferent synaptic tensor. When the latter has a:

Tetravalent synapses associate either intrinsic coding Effects with systemic

synapses that are at once both open and closed, or extrinsic ordering Affects with structural synapses that are at the same time open and closed. Synapses Sa and Se always function in a coupled fashion. The consti- tutive threshold of an Assemblage of enunciation is only crossed when such an articulation effectively takes place. On this side of the threshold, one has to consider that the entities arise from other formations, which have to be searched for bit by bit.

We will say that whenever an Assemblage finds itself polarized according to a relation of persistence Se Sa there is the virtualszation of an Affect and that whenever it finds itself polarized according to a relation of transistence Sa Se, there is the actualization of an Effect. This perpetual switching between persistantial virtual implosion and transistantial actual expansion never implies the total elimination of the two poles of Affect and Effect. Everything here is a game of taking consistency. The more (intrinsic or acquired) consistency an Affect possesses at the degree zero of discursivity, the more consistency the differentiated Effect, with which it is assembled, is in a position to acquire. And inversely. Virtual affectation and actual affec- tation come face to face with and envelop one another. They have the same ontological status. It is no longer a question of making a mimetic double of the virtual, an attenuated reflection of the real or a crystal of possibility on which actualization would confer the weight of existence. charges of the Unconscious are potential energies in the same way that the actual charges that physicists concern themselves with.

One last remark: this double movement of the affectation and effec- tuation of consistencies implies the calling into question of the hierarchy of types according to which logics have been constructed since Bertrand Russell, because as has been seen in the course of the development of our argument, the same instances found themselves successively and simulta- neously in the positions of elementary quanta of ‘pre-energetic’ correlation, semiotic operator and Assemblage quantification. It is a dream logic, then? A logic of archaic intensities?22 _{And perhaps also the logic of an era to come}
