CHILD CARE CONSULTATION TEAM FOLLOW -UP STUDY INFORMATION SHEET FOR PARENTS

As you know, your child(ren) was seen some time ago by the Child Care Consultation team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The team assessed the difficulties which your child(ren) and the family were experiencing then and made recommendations to the court about the child(ren)'s future. The judge may then have used these recommendations to help make his or her judgement.

The aims of the study

The aims of this study are to find out

• what was decided by the courts, as offen we were not provided with this information • what were the effects of these decisions for the children and young people involved,

especially where they were finally placed and how they are progressing now, both at home and at school

Why is the study being done?

This information is important for us, so that we can continue to improve the way we help children whom we see, in the future. It is also being requested by judges and others involved in family law. They too need to know the outcomes for children about whom they make these decisions.

How is the study being done?

The name(s) of your child/children will have been obtained from the Child Care Consultation team notes. Details of the Court’s decision will be obtained from the Court. The social work departments involved in the court proceedings will have been contacted to find out with whom the child is living now. The social work department will also be requested to provide information about any moves the child has undergone and any therapy which the child has received. A researcher will then want to meet with you and the child(ren) together, then with the child(ren) each on their own and then with you on your own. The meetings could either take place at your home or at Great Ormond Street hospital. Any travelling costs incurred by you and your family would be reimbursed. We would also make these appointments at times that were convenient for you.

We will be asking the children about themselves now, using two questioimaires to help with this assessment. We will not be talking about the child’s past experiences. We will be asking you as the child(ren)’s carer(s), about the child’s behaviour and adjustment, and again we will be using two questionnaires to help in this assessment.

The school would receive no information about the child's past experiences or why they had been seen by our team.

Are there risks and discomforts?

We know that some children would find thinking about these aspects of their lives painful. It may also stir up unwanted memories. We will make sure that, if we feel it is necessary and with the child’s agreement, you and/or their social worker will be told about this. W hat are the potential benefits?

On the other hand they might find it helpful to tell how the care proceedings felt to them. They may also like to know that their experiences can be used to help others who are going through the same process now.

Who will have access to research records?

Any information gathered in this study will be seen only by research members of the Child Care Consultation team involved. What the child discusses with us will be confidential and we could only discuss it with you if they requested us to. The only exception to this is if they tell us something that makes us concerned that they, or someone else, is in serious distress. In this case we would be obliged to discuss it with you and any relevant agencies. When the work is done it will be published in journals that could be read by other professionals who work in this field. This includes judges and social workers. None of the work published would contain your child's name or any other information which might make them identifiable.

Do 1 have to take part in this study?

If you decide, now or at a later stage, that you do not wish to be involved in this research project, that is entirely your right.

Who do I speak to if problems arise?

If you have any complaints about the way in which the research project has been, or is being conducted, please in the first instance, discuss them with the researcher. If the problems are not resolved, or you wish to comment in any other way, please contact the Chairman of the Research Ethics Committee, by post via the Research and Development OfiBce, Institute of Child Health, 30 Guilford Street, London WCIN 1ER, or if urgent, by telephone on 0171 242 9789 ex 2620, and the Committee administration will put you in touch with him.

FOR CHILDREN AGED 7+ LIVING WITH BIOLOGICAL PARENTS

CHILD CARE CONSULTATION TEAM FOLLOW-UP STUDY INFORMATION SHEET FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE You, as one of the many children and young people involved in this study, will at one time have been seen by the Child Care Consultation team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The team assessed the difficulties which children and families were experiencing then and made recommendations to the court about where it would be best for the children to live. The Judge often used these recommendations to help him or her make this decision.

The aims of the study

The aims of this study are to find out • what the court decided

• what were the effects of these decisions for the children and young people involved Why is the study being done?

The study is being done because the team often has no information about what is decided in court and what happens to the children in the long term. The judges who make the decisions have also said they would like to know what happens to the children and young people after the court proceedings are over.

We hope that by talking to children about this, it will help the way both we and the courts make recommendations and decisions for children we see now.

How is the study being done?

The names of children seen by the team will have been obtained firom the team notes. Details of the Court’s decision will be obtained from the Court. The social work departments involved will have been contacted to see where the children are living now. The social work department will also be requested to provide information about any moves and any therapy the children have had.

We will then want to meet with you and your parent or the person looking after you now, both together and on your own. This could take place at your home or in the department at Great Ormond Street. We would find a time to meet which was convenient for you. There would be two forms to go through which ask particular questions about you and your feelings. You will not be asked to describe what had happened in your life before the court proceedings. We will be asking your parent or the person looking after you, about

The school would receive no information about the child's past experiences or why they had been seen by our team.
