ACADEMY OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS: ALLIED HEALTH (ET) CIP: 51.9999

The allied health program is an instructional program that introduces students to the various occupations found in the health care field. Students gain knowledge and exposure for career decisions in the multidimensional field of allied health. Practical assignments are provided to help students understand the wide range of careers in health care. The curriculum includes basic preparation in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, mathematics, and related natural sciences. Topics covered in allied health include medical terminology, introduction to healthcare/medical careers, legal and ethical concerns, first aid, CPR, disease, basic patient care, human development, pain theory and control, pathology, rehabilitative and therapeutic theory and technique, wellness programming, and training and conditioning concepts. Students will qualify to sit for the National Health Care Foundation Skill Standards Assessment/Certificate. Upon completion of the program, students may continue their postsecondary training in emergency medical technology, para-medicine, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician’s assistant, sports medicine, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, pharmacy, audiology, psychology, wellness, fitness, and many other allied health careers. Students who complete the program successfully may earn articulated credits and dual enrollment with CCBC. Fees may be required.

ACADEMY OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS: ALLIED HEALTH/CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (SPT) CIP: 51.9999 The allied health/certified nursing assistant (CNA) program introduces students to the various occupations found in the health care field. Students apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, basic patient care procedures, medication calculations, and communication skills necessary to assist clients in a variety of health care facilities. Instruction includes classroom discussions, demonstrations, practice laboratory activities and clinical internships at a local hospital and geriatric long-term care facility. Students will qualify to sit for the National Health Care Foundation Skill Standards assessment/certificate. Students earn a minimum of 75 hours of service-learning that will satisfy the Maryland State graduation requirement. Successful completion of the entire program enables students to qualify for Maryland State Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or earn articulated credits through parallel enrollment with CCBC. Students will also be prepared for college-level allied health courses. Fees may be required.

ACADEMY OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS: HEALTH SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY (WST) CIP: 51.9999 The health science technology program introduces students to the various occupations found in the health care field. The program

provides opportunities for students to learn the basic skills used by entry-level health care assistants. Students apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical office management skills, basic assessment procedures, medical mathematics, and technical communications necessary to provide patient care in a variety of health care settings. Instruction includes classroom discussions, demonstrations, practice laboratory activities, and internships at a local hospital in inpatient, outpatient, medical office, and clinical settings. Students earn a minimum of 75 hours of service-learning that will satisfy the Maryland State graduation requirement. Students who successfully complete the entire program qualify to take the National Healthcare Foundation Skills Assessment. Eligible students who pass this assessment will obtain a Certificate of Mastery. At the completion of the course students may continue their health care education in postsecondary programs at colleges, universities, or private institutions, or seek entry-level employment. Students who choose to enroll at CCBC may earn three credits in First Aid and CPR.

ACADEMY OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS: HEALTH SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ACADEMY (MM) CIP: 51.9999 The Health Science Technology Academy introduces students to the various occupations found in the health care field. Students apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, basic patient care procedures, medication calculations, and communication skills necessary to assist clients in a variety of health care facilities. After completing required foundation health care courses, students will select from either the traditional allied health patient care application pathway or the allied health/rehabilitative therapeutic fitness pathway. Instruction includes classroom discussions, demonstrations, practice laboratory activities and clinical internships at a local hospital and/or geriatric long-term care facilities. Successful completion of either pathway enables students to sit for National Health Care Foundation Skill Standards Assessment/Certificate. Students may also pursue certification as a CNA or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA), or continue their postsecondary education in health care careers. Students who complete the program successfully may earn articulated college credit at CCBC. Fees may be required.

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY: BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES (FH, OV, LN, NT, SPT, WD) CIP: 51.1150 This program is designed to meet the needs for more employees who are qualified science and health professionals. Biomedical sciences is a broad field encompassing many different medical and healthcare disciplines. This program will give students the foundation skills to prepare for high-skill, high-wage positions in biomedical sciences. The Project Lead the Way biomedical sciences program is based on the National Standards for Science, Mathematics, and English Language Arts, and the Accountability Criteria for the National Health Care Cluster Foundation Standards. The biomedical science courses include Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions, and Biomedical Innovation. Students must have completed Biology, be enrolled in college preparatory mathematics and science courses, or have the science department chair’s permission to enroll in this rigorous completer program. Fees may be required.
