FIRST READING
The eyes of the LORD are upon those who love him.
A reading from the Book of Sirach. 34:9-‐‑17
A man with training gains wide knowledge;
a man of experience speaks sense.
One never put to the proof knows little,
whereas with travel a man adds to his resourcefulness.
I have seen much in my travels,
learned more than ever I could say.
Often I was in danger of death,
but by these attainments I was saved.
Lively is the courage of those who fear the LORD, for they put their hope in their savior;
He who fears the LORD is never alarmed, never afraid; for the LORD is his hope.
Happy the soul that fears the LORD!
In whom does he trust, and who is his support?
The eyes of the LORD are upon those who love him;
he is their mighty shield and strong support,
A shelter from the heat, a shade from the noonday sun, a guard against stumbling, a help against falling.
He buoys up the spirits, brings a sparkle to the eyes, gives health and life and blessing.
The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God!
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 117
R. Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News.
Praise the Lord, all you nations;
glorify him, all you peoples!
R. Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News.
For steadfast is his kindness towards us,
And the fidelity of the Lord endures forever.
R. Go out to all the world, and tell the Good News.
SECOND READING
Be renewed in the spirit of your minds.
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 4:23-‐‑32
Brothers and sisters:
Be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self,
created in God’s way in righteousness and holiness of truth.
Therefore, putting away falsehood,
speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
Be angry but do not sin;
do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not leave room for the devil.
The thief must no longer steal,
but rather labor, doing honest work with his [own] hands, so that he may have something to share with one in need.
No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear.
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God,
with which you were sealed for the day of redemption.
All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice.
And be kind to one another, compassionate,
forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.
The Word of the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God!
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
R./ Alleluia, Alleluia Acts 5:42
All day long, both at the temple and in their homes,
the apostles did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Christ, Jesus.
R./ Alleluia, Alleluia
The deacon who is to proclaim the gospel bows to the Bishop.
In a low voice, he asks his blessing:
Father, give me your blessing.
The Bishop says in a low voice:
May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips,
that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father
and of the Son +
and of the Holy Spirit.
The deacon answers:
Amen.
GOSPEL
The deacon greets the assembled faithful and announces the Gospel:
The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.
+ A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St Luke.
4:14-‐‑22a
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me
R. Glory to You, O Lord.
The deacon incenses the book and proclaims the gospel.
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
and news of him spread throughout the whole region.
He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.
He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom
into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.
Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
And all spoke highly of him
and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.
The Gospel of the Lord.
R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
While the choir and the assembly repeat the acclamation, the deacon carries the Book of the Gospels to the Bishop, who kisses it and blesses the assembly with it.
HOMILY
The Bishop preaches the homily.
A period of silence is observed after the homily.
PROFESSION OF FAITH
The Bishop:
Dear brothers and sisters, Through the paschal mystery
we have been buried with Christ in baptism, so that we may rise to a new life.
Now, after hearing the Word of God, let us renew the profession of faith made in our baptism
and recommit ourselves
to love and serve faithfully God
and our brothers and sisters in His holy Church.
The Bishop:
Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth?
R. Credo, Credo, Credo, Amen.
