Course Description: This course is designed to introduce the principles and concepts of psychology to seniors and to provide an opportunity to gain some insight into themselves as individuals. The course uses experimentation and the Socratic method in a discussion framework, to gain an understanding of the basic psychological concepts. Student evaluation is based on class participation, review quizzes, contemporary psychological research assignments, a book review, a psychological experiment and a final exam. Students should expect a course with strict standards. An Honors option is available in this course. The Honors option requires the student to complete specific enrichment activities for each unit of the course over and above the basic requirements of the class.

Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:

• Identify the influences on personality development

• Analyze the difference between sense and perception

• Demonstrate the active process that is learning

• Evaluate the varying theories of personality development

• Describe the major theories of personality disorders

• Create a product incorporating methods of analysis, inquiry, drawing conclusions, and interpreting statistics accurately.

Course Description:

This course examines law related subjects relevant to the student's life. Topics include criminal law and procedure, the law of torts and civil procedure, family and juvenile law. Further, other discussion topics will include law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, and the court system. The course emphasizes individual accountability and the role of law in American society. A text is provided and regular homework includes chapter assignments, readings, essays and critical thinking exercises. Students will be required to complete bi-weekly reaction papers/article reviews and complete a major project.

Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:

• Acquire knowledge of the law & the ability to Interpret that knowledge

• Examine historical documents critically

• Write in a variety of ways to prove a point

• Discuss, express, listen, communicate and collaborate with others to do the same

SS240 PHILOSOPHY ELECTIVE GRADE 11-12

Course Description:

Introduction to Philosophy examines the history and various areas of philosophical study from the Ancient Greeks to modern times. The course will primarily examine the connections between human nature and the types of political philosophy that exist. This course will also focus on how philosophy

affects our daily lives and why studying philosophy is important. We will be using materials from Plato’s Republic, Sophie’s World, The Prince, The

Federalist Papers, Siddartha and others.

Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:

• Trace the evolution of civilizations and the diffusion of knowledge in the arts, literature and thought.

• Determine relationships among geography, technology, culture and their effects on economic, social and political development.

• Compare and Contrast the origins and spread of influential religions and ideologies and the evolution of political and social institutions.

• Comprehend the causes of war, process of settling conflict and the strategies to promote diplomacy.

• Determine the characteristics of revolutionary, reactionary and reform periods across a time and place.

• Distinguish between the changing patterns of class, ethic, racial and gender structures and relations.

Course Description:

Contemporary America is an interdisciplinary semester course designed for seniors who wish to become informed about various topics that are of interest to them, their classmates, and the nation as a whole. Topics will be selected from the following list: the American Dream, the media, technology and change, the changing nature of family, and a host of other social issues. Students will read, debate, view and discuss, discuss, discuss. Assessment will be based on class participation, assignments and a final project.

Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:

FA819 EXPERIENCES THROUGH ART ELECTIVE GRADES 10-12

1.0 CREDIT YEAR LONG

Upon completion of this course the student will have a working knowledge of many famous artists and periods of art. The student will be able to discuss most art work he/she may come in contact with.

Course Description:

For students who are interested in learning how and why various artworks have been created through time, this course will help to unfold some of the mysteries! Classes are centered on discussions, with periodic tests/quizzes. Small projects and reports will be assigned as well. Art units are linked to the beliefs, culture and outside forces of the time, extending too many parts of the world.

FA816 TWO DIMENSIONAL ART ELECTIVE GRADE 9-12

1.0 CREDIT SEMESTER/YEAR LONG

Course Description:

This preliminary course is designed to introduce the student to the world of two-dimensional art. Project based, it is created to help students become aware of the great potential and importance the visual arts play in self-expression and problem solving. The class will experience basic media and techniques used in creating artwork on a flat plane. Students give and receive feedback about their projects through informal critiques. This includes forms of drawing, painting and collage work. Exploration into the Elements and Principles of Art (line, shape, color, value, texture, harmony and balance) are emphasized in each project. This course offers a sound introduction to studio art.

FA817 THREE DIMENSIONAL ART ELECTIVE GRADE 9-12

1.0 CREDIT SEMESTER/YEAR LONG

Course Description

This introductory course introduces the student to the world of three-dimensional art. Class members will explore art in the round as well as work created in relief. A project based class; students are encouraged to increase their self-expression and to solve problems creatively. This course offers a sound introduction to studio art, and works together with Two Dimensional Art to form a comprehensive base for further art courses.

Upon completion of this course a student will have the necessary skills and techniques needed to create three-dimensional artwork. The student will have explored and experimented with many different sculpture mediums.

FA8215 CREATING ART THROUGH COMPUTERS ELECTIVE GRADE 10-12

Course Description

Are you interested in bringing your art to the computer screen? Computer art is a fast-growing career in our society at the present time. This course offers an introduction to computerized art. Students will explore color theory and perspective as created on a computer screen. Elements and Principle of art are developed through the use of line, value, texture, shape and balance. Project based, students create their own original and exciting artwork while exploring possible careers in the field.
