Analyzes public attitudes and institutional arrangements which affect the interfaces between society and business; examines the interaction of private management/public planning in Canada at each level of government.
Course Objectives:
1. To understand the role, scope and rationale of Government(s) in Canada's mixed economy;
2. To examine the role of private sector business contributing to Canadian economic and social objectives;
3. To evaluate how the business sector can formulate and implement successful strategies to deal with Government sector(s);
4. To evaluate how modern Government can work effectively with Canadian business on behalf of society, including the opportunities and constraints of government involvement; and 5. To identify and assess key Canadian structural features (eg Crown Corporations) and
current issues (eg fiscal choices, privatization, environment, economic growth, ethics).
Course Approach:
Combines current data/events/issues, lectures, cases, and class participation; the focus will be proactive and strategic, with emphasis on integration and synthesis of business and government policy goals. Students are expected to be attentive to the social and economic environment around them. Course attendance and punctuality (a la career success!) is expected.
Grading: Midterm Exam (1 hour) 20 %
Quizzes (3 @ 3% each) -- dates to be announced 9 % Paper: Policy, or Case, or Project -- due last day of class 20 %
Final Exam (2 hours) -- centrally scheduled 50 %
