What Am I?
As a fashion accessory, I might have fallen out of favor with presidents, but I am still tops with Uncle Sam, Willy Wonka, Uncle Pennybags, the Mad Hatter, and magicians. On the day of my debut, I created quite a stir. I was so outlandish that an officer of the law accused me of disturbing public order, and that is no tall tale. While I was once worn by people of all social classes, I am considered a fashion accessory of high society. As an extravagant construction of silk, beaver, linen, flannel, and shellac, I symbolize elegance. What am I?
Centennial Memories
On this day 100 years ago, Dr. Frederick Banting, Charles Best, and their colleagues at the University of Toronto announced that they had successfully isolated insulin.
Banting had isolated insulin from dogs, inducing diabetes symptoms in them, and then provided insulin injections that produced normal glucose blood levels. The discovery was a scientific breakthrough, but now Banting needed to make the treatment work in humans. In just six months, Banting would successfully treat diabetes in a 14-year-old boy, and in 1923 he would win the Nobel Prize in medicine.
