1775 – In the midst of the Inquisition, the Spanish-controlled Philippine Islands were ordered to shut down any Chinese restaurants not owned by Catholics. The ban was a precursor to the expulsion of the Chinese over the next decade.
1776 – Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded. Restored in the 1990s, the mission is the oldest structure in San Francisco and is still an active church.
1908 – A meteoroid exploded above Siberia and flattened an estimated 80 million forest trees. The airburst is known as the Tunguska Event.
Since it occurred in such an isolated area, there were no known human casualties. The event has sparked discussion about what can be done to defend against such impacts.

Lena Horne (1917–2010) was a prominent American singer, actress, dancer, and civil rights activist who grew up in Brooklyn, New York.
As a teenager, the stunning, multi- talented dancer started her career as a chorus line performer at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club. She then went to Hollywood to work as a singer and actress. Horne continued to perform for over seven decades, including in her 1981 smash Broadway show Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. The popular
jazz singer was well- known for the song
“Stormy Weather”
and for the movie Cabin in the Sky.

During a year of lockdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic, zookeepers reported that many zoo animals were missing the company of human visitors. When visitors recently returned to a British zoo, the meerkats were overjoyed. Scientists studying the effect of the lockdowns on zoo animals noted more positive social interactions between the animals and increased positive interactions with human visitors.
African penguins, however, carried on as normal as if nothing had changed.
