THE THE

On This Date

1775 – In the midst of the Inquisition, the Spanish-controlled Philippine Islands were ordered to shut down any Chinese restaurants not owned by Catholics. The ban was a precursor to the expulsion of the Chinese over the next decade.

1776 – Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded. Restored in the 1990s, the mission is the oldest structure in San Francisco and is still an active church.

1908 – A meteoroid exploded above Siberia and flattened an estimated 80 million forest trees. The airburst is known as the Tunguska Event.

Since it occurred in such an isolated area, there were no known human casualties. The event has sparked discussion about what can be done to defend against such impacts.
