Mad Science
How do shoelaces come untied?
Scientists have discovered that walking and running produce forces more powerful than roller coasters.
These extreme forces first loosen the knot. Next, the flapping of the lace ends accelerates the unraveling.
Experts examined film of the process.
At first, it seemed as if the laces held tight, but then suddenly the entire knot became undone. The researchers determined that no matter how tight you tie a shoelace, once the process of unraveling starts, the laces inevitably come untied.
What Am I?
I might be used to read a book or to offer a prayer. I am considered romantic, decorative, or holy, depending on my purpose. The earliest version of me was found in ancient China, made from whale fat.
Today, the nicest of me are often made from beeswax. Some consider me old fashioned and unnecessary, merely a decoration, but I retain my usefulness in times of trouble. I will work slowly, and when I am finished, I disappear into thin air.
