Music Trivia
Much classical music was composed for the entertainment of the intelligentsia, but Vivaldi composed
music that was accessible and enjoyable to everyone. Even today,
many coffee shops play Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons to add to the
relaxed ambience.
Happy Birthday!
Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) was an Italian Baroque composer and violinist known for creating vibrant arrangements. Vivaldi taught music at an orphanage in Venice for most of his career and was also an ordained priest. The Four Seasons, a series of four violin concertos, is his best-known work and is among the most popular pieces in classical music repertoire. In 1926, 300 of his concertos and 19 operas were discovered in a monastery by researchers. Two psalms and an opera have been discovered during recent years. The opera was performed in 2008 for the first time since 1730.

Centennial Memories
On this day 100 years ago, Babe Ruth was up for a new contract with the New York Yankees, and he asked for a huge payout. When negotiations stalled, Ruth proposed that the terms be decided by a coin toss. The Babe called “Tails!” and secured a massive salary of $52,000 a year for three years with a bonus of $500 for every home run. When asked why he chose the number, Ruth said,
“There are 52 weeks in a year, and I’ve always wanted to make a grand a week.”
