Recent Jewish Publishing in Argentina: A Mixed Blessing

Argentinian Jewish Publishing

Since the early 1980s, a steady stream of material on the Jewish community of Argen- tina has been appearing in that country, but with the restoration of democracy in October 1983, this stream has swelled considerably.

Many Jewish cultural societies, research in- stitutes, and organizations seem to have sprouted up overnight

and have been publishing studies on the Jewish community in Argentina anp in other South American countries. These studies, which are mostly in Spanish,2 explore various aspects of Jew- ish life and culture in South America, often focusing on such topics as Jewish immigra- tion and colonization, antisemitism, and Jewish participation in general society. In addition to issuing original works, these in- stitutions are reprinting a large amount of out-of-print material in both Spanish and Yiddish.

One can only speculate about the impetus for all this activity, as the potential reader- ship for this material, even in Argentina, cannot be very large. Perhaps the older generation of Jewish intellectuals is attempt- ing to ensure that its literary heritage is preserved for future generations. Or, perhaps a younger generation of Jewish intellectuals and academics has arisen, ea- ger to explore its cultural and literary roots.

There may also be some significance to the fact that in 1988, the Argentine Jewish community will be celebrating its centenary.

Whatever the reason for their appearance, these publications should certainly be wel- comed by the scholarly community outside Argentina, for Argentina's Jewish commu- nity is the seventh largest in the world,

and information about it is relatively hard to ob- tain. This void has seriously hampered the scholarly study of Argentine and other Latin American Jewries.

Quality of the Publications

Unfortunately, the reprinted material, a large part of which is in Yiddish, is flawed in many respects. The paper being usep is not much better than newsprint. The quality of repro- duction is quite poor; many pages are faint

or blurred, and photographs are often barely discernible. Many books are printed on one side of the leaf only, which adds considerably to their bulk. The editors often choose to split up books that were originally printed in one volume into several fascicles, some- times preserving the original pagination, other times not. All the books are paper- bound, and the bindings are of very poor quality. To add insult to injury, the prices for these works are quite high.

It was probably not the intention of the pub- lishers of this material to make life difficult for librarians having to purchase and catalog it, but they have certainly succeeded in doing so. For all items, Spanish titles are given prominence, and often, the original Yiddish title pages are not reproduced.

When Yiddish titles are included, the original imprints are generally omitted. Some- times, new Spanish titles are assigned to works, and not a trace is left of their original title pages. This makes searching these items extremely difficult. At times, it is al- most impossible to figure out whether a given item is an original work or a reprint of a previously published work. In some cases, a section of a book or a journal article is assigned a new Spanish title and issued as a separate item, with only a note indicating the year of original publication;

often, even a note is lacking. In other cases, series have been created which include sev- eral monographs, but which do not include bibliographic data for the original editions.

Libraries interested in collecting in this area have no choice but to acquire these publications since, in most cases, the originals or microforms are not available. It should also be noted that several yizker-bikher for Jewish communities destroyed in the Ho- locaust are included in this material

and more will probably be reproduced in the future.
