where you have difficulties and refer back to the lecture notes or textbook materials to refine your understanding of the concepts. If you still run into problems, you can either post your questions on the discussion board or stop by my office during my office hours.
This is a difficult course.
For each topic covered, there will be two or three lectures that will progressively cover more difficult and technically challenging material. If you don’t understand the earlier material you WILL NOT be able to understand the later lectures. In the past, students who failed to keep up with the course materials throughout the semester did very poorly in the exams. Please raise questions at an early stage – either in class or during my office hours, or simply post them on discussion board.
Projects and Exams:
Your grade will be determined based on the following components:
Mid-term Exams (two in class) 25% each = 50%
Term project 15%
Final Exam (See schedule below) 35%
All projects and exams are designed to test your understanding of the concepts you need to learn rather than your ability to memorize and regurgitate. As a result, all questions in the exams will be slightly different from the class discussion questions and the self studied questions. All exams are closed book. You will have 120 minutes to write each mid-term exam, and three hours to write the final exam. You are responsible for all assigned materials, including handouts, articles posted on Blackboard, and any additional material introduced in class unless I have explicitly excluded it.
Exam coverage:
Midterm 1 (July 20, 2009) Chapters 13, 14, 15, 16
Midterm 2 (August 5, 2009) Chapters 17, 18, 19, 22
Final Exam (TBD: August 13 or 14, 2009) Cumulative
The final exam is cumulative, which means that all course material is examinable. All exams will be held in the regular classroom scheduled for the semester.
Please bring your student ID card or other acceptable photo identification on the day you write an exam.
Absence from Exams
Absence from an examination will be treated as a score of zero unless documented evidence of illness or a family crisis is provided within one week of an examination and five days of the final examination. In the event that an examination is missed for acceptable reasons, no make-ups will be given. Instead, the credit assigned to the missed work will be reallocated to the final examination.
Once you have written an exam, grades will not be reallocated due to explanations given after the fact. Therefore, if you are too ill to write an exam, please obtain a doctor’s note and do not attempt the quiz or the exam.
If a student is absent from the final exam, he or she must obtain permission from the Faculty’s Undergraduate Office to write a deferred final exam. Please note that conflicts with CASB requirements and/or recruiting will not result in rescheduling of any exams. If a deferred final exam is required for this course, it will be held on
Monday, August 17th, 2009, 18:00 (Location TBA).
Term project:
You will be required to team up with two other students (three students per group) to complete the term project.
Each individual in a group will receive the same grade for the term paper. When you complete the term project, please make sure that you have done sufficient research on the topic and that you substantiate your arguments and positions based on a sound understanding of how accounting relates to the particular facts and issues are
addressed in the paper.
A list of your group members are due as indicated in the class schedule below.
Course Grades:
Please note that the University average grade distribution is based on all courses across campus including courses of varying levels of difficulty. Traditionally, the median (mean) grades in the courses in the AMIS department are lower than the University average. As a result, the distribution of grades in this course will not necessarily coincide exactly with the University average distribution. In the past several years, the mean grade in this course has been B-.
