JOB DESCRIPTION Professional Practice Leader ___________________________________________________________________

Job Title: Professional Practice Leader Position Summary

First Nations Health Authority and its employees are committed to a proactive holistic approach to health and wellness and are committed to the delivery of services which are sustainable and honour the customs and traditions of First Nations communities.

The Professional Practice Leader is responsible for the delivery of educational programs, processes and services. They will provide expertise in the facilitation of clinical skills development and advance professional practice within the First Nations Health Authority Nursing Programs.

Reports to: Director of Nursing General Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Understands and respects First Nations cultural principles and protocols and is able to apply this understanding in work situations.

2. Determines requirements and plans directs and evaluates the efficacy of nurse education programming, including in-service, professional development, and provincial standards training and graduate studies programs (e.g. Nurse Practitioner Master’s program).

3. Directs an ongoing program of provincial standards review and evaluates and develops or revises existing standards to ensure they reflect current best practices.

4. Carries out or directs quality management initiatives such as introduction of evidence-based tools and processes for the assessment of nursing clinical competencies and professional practice skills.

5. Provides leadership, human resource and financial management of the Education Team nursing practice consultants who provide advisory/clinical practice services (i.e. orientation, training, in service, preceptor, clinical support and clinical competency assessment), to community health nurses working in First Nations communities.

6. Provides the nursing consultant and other senior nursing staff with expert advice, analysis and recommendations concerning clinical and professional practice issues and leads formal investigations into clinical and professional practice incidents that occur within the region.

7. Represents nursing program interests (clinical and professional practice), on provincial and professional advisory groups, associations, and committees and with First Nations partners and communities.

8. Participates in the recruitment, interviewing and selection of new staff.

9. Manages staff performance and conduct of her education team members. Supervises day to day work, directly assigns work, resolves workplace disputes, assess the performance of staff, imposes discipline and terminates employment.

10. Provides support and advice directly to the senior nursing team with respect to personnel matters, business direction and service delivery.

11. Adapts and modifies programs to meet specific needs.

12. Develops nursing standards and guidelines to address community health and clinical practice areas where standards are unique. Ensures standards are current and resolve issues of potential overlap and conflict between standards to take action on liability/legal issues where

inconsistencies exist.

13. Researches new and emerging clinical and professional practice issues, analyzes the implications for the practice of nursing in First Nations communities, provide expert advice and

recommendations to senior nursing employees respecting new approaches and directions and leadership on development and implementation of initiatives adopted by the provincial nursing program.

Qualifications

Language (Required):

 English essential.

Education (Required):

 Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

 Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in British Columbia.

Education (Asset):

 Master’s degree in nursing or a health related field.

 Completion of First Nations Health Authority approved program in outpost or primary skills program or equivalent, or nurse practitioner program.

Training and Experience (Required):

 Significant experience in the provision of primary care and community health nursing services.

Experience in acute care services such as medical-surgical, emergency, critical care nursing may be considered.

 Experience in providing nursing education and in mentoring nurses.

 Experience identifying and analyzing practice issues and developing strategies for improvement.

 Successful completion of approved training in public health nursing or successful completion of approved training in another nursing speciality.

 Candidates and appointees to nursing positions will be provided with training in areas such as clinical skills and community health should they require as well as upgrading and/or re-certifications on an on-going basis. Training courses may be for a few days or up to four (4) months and may require an extended absence from the residential and/or work location. Appointees must be willing to undertake such training as it is scheduled. Training/learning plans will be prepared on an

individual basis according to the experience, education and/or learning needs of the individual. In particular, nurses employed by FNHA are also expected to meet those competencies specified by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC). These requirements for “certified practice” in accordance with the CRNBC must be met as soon as possible.

Training and Experience (Assets):

 Experience in leading teams.

 Experience delivering health or social services in a First Nations Setting.

 Experience working in a rural or remote health care setting.

 Completion of FNHA approved program in outpost or primary skills program or equivalent.

 Experience in preparation of reports.

Knowledge (Required):

 Knowledge of the common, acute, chronic and emergency services or conditions as identified in the FNHA competencies for nurses working in First Nations communities.

 Knowledge of nursing which includes the nursing process, conceptual frameworks of nursing, theories and principles of nursing practice. Problem solving techniques/skills are required to develop policies, procedures, and practices for community health nurses.

 Knowledge of advanced clinical nursing practice for the development of policies or guidelines to support the delivery of treatment services which includes current clinical treatment practices, principles, techniques, disease symptoms, and accident indicators.

 Knowledge of First Nations cultures and backgrounds and the understanding of how culture impacts on communication patterns and attitudes and approaches to health issues.

 Knowledge of the components of an educational program.

Knowledge (Assets):

 Knowledge of public health models and concepts to work effectively with other health disciplines internally and externally and to integrate nursing plans and strategies with other health plans, e.g.

provincial health authority services.

 Knowledge of the FNHA competencies for nurses working in First Nations Communities.

 Knowledge of cultural competence.

 Knowledge and the application of concepts, principles and theories of trans-cultural nursing including knowledge of traditional, homeopathic or other healing practices used in the community.

 Knowledge of human and financial resource management.

Abilities (Required):

 Ability to engage stakeholders and collaborate on activities.

 Ability to lead.

 Ability to create learning tools, teach nursing staff and assess learning.

 Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

 Ability to use the Internet for research purposes.

 Ability to use word processing software to produce correspondence and reports.

Security and Reliability:

 Reliability Status security clearance.

 Possession of a valid driver’s license or personal mobility to the degree associated with possession of a valid driver’s license.

Personal Suitability:

 Effective interpersonal relationships, flexibility, initiative, judgment, accountability, dependability, respectful of diversity, commitment to continuous learning and leadership.

Working Conditions:

 Availability to travel on a regular basis throughout the province by vehicle over rough roads, by float or small plane, by boat or helicopter.

 Working for periods of time in isolated posts is required.

 Overtime may be required periodically.
