Seventh Pan Cyprian Celebration of the World Wetlands Day 2011 – 30.01.2011
Today, that our natural environment is in constant "damage" due to various human activities and due to the "modern society" in which man himself chose to live, international conventions such as the Convention of Ramsar, are particularly significant because such conventions give voice to the natural environment that everyday endures and experiences destruction. The Ramsar Convention about Wetlands signed in the city of Ramsar, Iran, in 1971, as an intergovernmental agreement. Since then, the anniversary of the Convention signature, February 2nd, 1971, is marked and is used to be celebrated every year as the World Wetlands Day.
Wetlands Importance:
The wetlands provide essential ecological services and are regulators of hydrological systems and sources of biodiversity at all levels - species, genetic and ecosystems.
The wetlands are of great economic, scientific, cultural and recreational value to the community.
The wetlands play a vital role in mitigating climate change.
Progressive degradation and loss of wetlands causes serious and sometimes irreparable environmental damage to the supply of ecosystem services.
The wetlands should be maintained and where possible restored.
The wetlands are lost:
More than half of the world wetlands have been lost over the last 100 years.
Greater destruction and degradation has been observed during the first half of the 20th century in the Northern Hemisphere and has increased since 1950 in the Southern Hemisphere.
It is estimated that Europe has lost 60% of the wetlands.
In Cyprus there is no evidence for loss of wetlands, but many species of wild flora and fauna many of which are endemic or rare and endangered, live in the wetlands.
Protection measures/actions:
Until today more than 1912 wetlands that cover more than 186 million of hectares were included in the Convention and they were nominated as Wetlands of International Importance.
Within this framework, the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education organised this year the 7th Pan Cyprian celebration for the World Wetlands Day. The event was supported by the Cyprus Ecological Movement, by the Cyprus Environmental Movement “Enarmonisi”, the Cyprus Birdlife Organization and the Naturalist-Mountaineering Group of Limassol. Besides, this year‟s celebrations having as Slogan “Forests for Water and Wetlands”, are really special because 2011 is also the Convention‟s 40th anniversary year. The celebration was a chance for the public, representatives of the Government, environmental NGOs, as well as representatives of the church to meet, exchange opinions and celebrate this day.
Since this year, it is the UN‟s International Year of Forests; we have a valuable opportunity to ensure that wetlands and their links with forests are not forgotten. These interconnections are included into three main headings:
Forested wetlands and the special benefits they bring. Mangroves, peat swamp forests, freshwater
swamp forests: biologically diverse, helping us manage our freshwater, and providing us with many other „services‟ across the globe including vital roles in carbon storage – our allies in the face of climate change. Despite their utility, they are often under threat from development, from drainage and conversion.
The role of forests – wet or not – in our lives, and why looking after them matters. Vital to all
human lives, freshwater availability on a global scale depends on our forests. So too, to a large extent, does freshwater quality.
The role of forests in how our wetlands function. It‟s simple: the health of our wetlands, whether
forested or not, is linked to the health of forests in our catchments. Losing and degrading forests means losing and degrading wetlands.
The celebration of CY.C.E.R.E. aimed to highlight the importance of wetlands at our island. Akrotiri Peninsula includes a significant wetland complex qualified for listing as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Akrotiri salt lake, as well as a number of salt marsh vegetation communities that have been developed around the lake and that are really important for a range of wetland birds including flamingo Phoenicopterus rubber, Fassouri marshes that lie to the northeast of the salt lake as well as Despotiki Limni (Bishop‟s Lake) that constitutes the last Cypriot and also European freshwater habitat/station for the migratory birds, create the greater wetlands complex in Cyprus.
Beyond definitions, these wetlands are vital ecological and cultural features in Cyprus landscape. It is essential that we preserve and take action for the conservation of these vulnerable and threatened ecosystems so the future generations will have the opportunity to benefit from them as we did.

Προζπάζεηες γηα λα προζηαηεσηούλ:
