THE ‘OTHER’ CITIES OF ENGLAND
Adapted from the book ‘England’ by John Escott

Twenty-five million people visit England every year. Nearly all of them go to London first, and
some never leave.(1) London is a wonderful place, but there are many more places to see. Many of these can tell you more about England and the English. (10)
Newcastle-upon-Tyne is on the north-east coast. The Quayside, the modern part of the city, has many cafés, bars, and restaurants. (2) There are seven bridges across the city. When big boats
go up the river, the new Millennium bridge opens and closes like an eye. (3) In 1998, the Angel of the North was constructed 7 kilometres away from Newcastle. It is 20 metres high and visitors often go to the north to see it.
To the south, York has some wonderful old buildings, castles and museums. The city has a beautiful Gothic monument ‘York Minster’, its amazing cathedral. There are great guided walks in
York. You can take a walk through Roman York or along the old city walls. (4)
Oxford and Cambridge are England’s most famous university cities. They both have rivers and a good, economic way for tourists to see the cities in the warmer months, is from a boat called a “punt”. (5) Oxford is near the centre of England. Its beautiful Bridge of Sighs is like the bridge with the same name in Venice. (6) You can visit many of the thirty-nine colleges or
enjoy its social life in the many pubs and cafés. Cambridge is in the east, north of London. Cambridge University has thirty-one colleges, all in the centre of the city. King’s College is one of
the city’s most beautiful buildings and the singers from King’s College are famous all over the world. (7) Every year on Christmas Eve they give a concert, which millions of people watch on
television.
Bath is in the south-west. Naturally warm water comes out of the ground here so the Romans built a city with baths. (8) In the nineteenth century thousands of people travelled to Bath for
health or leisure reasons. Today you can only visit the Roman baths. Jane Austen, the writer of
Pride and Prejudice, lived in Bath between 1801 and 1806.
Bristol is on the River Avon. In the old days boats from around the world went up and down the
river, but now the marina is full of shops. The city is famous for its music industry, as well as its food festival in July. England’s oldest theatre is in Bristol. It was built in 1766. (9)
