“Lenten Joy/Light over Darkness”
In today’s passage from the Gospel of John (Jn 3:14-21), we come across a fascinating
encounter between two teachers. In the preceding verses, we eavesdrop on a private conversation
between Nicodemus and Jesus. In the darkness, Nicodemus longs to understand what is behind the
miracles that Jesus worked. The darkness hides their conversation from those who would not
understand. As a leading Pharisee, it would be unwise for him to be seen with Jesus but as a searcher for
the truth, he takes the risk.
Jesus tries to explain to him the mystery as one teacher to another, but Nicodemus cannot fathom
the secrets known only to him who has descended from above. How can he possibly understand that
which is not of this world unless he believes in the testimony of the One who does know? In what
follows Jesus contrasts life and light with darkness and evil. It is the darkness that two men meet but it is
in the search for enlightenment that Nicodemus has come. It is by being enlightened by God that we are
raised beyond the confines of our mortal state. It is only then that we can emerge from the darkness of
ignorance and the hidden recesses of our lives where evil resides.
Even the sufferings and injustices of this world, that darken any faith in so many, prove the need
for me to trust in the Kingdom of God. When God gave up His Son and allowed Him to be lifted up on
the Cross, He shone a spotlight on every evil act, however small or trivial. Jesus’s death on the cross says
to us: ‘Open your eyes. Look what you are doing!’The path we walk leads us from darkness to light,
from evil and death to life. It leads us to a knowledge of the God who created us and raises us up from
this life to the endless life. We have chosen to stare at the reality of the cross, however painful, rather
than to cover our faces with our pillows, roll over and go back to sleep.
In our union with Christ, we are the light of the world, you and I. We are God’s torches. It is our
job to shine the light of Christ in every dark corner of the world, to show up evil for what it is; to show
up the darkness and call people into the light.

"Gozo cuaresmal / Luz sobre las tinieblas"
En el pasaje de hoy del Evangelio de Juan (Jn 3, 14-21), nos encontramos con un encuentro
fascinante entre dos maestros. En los versículos anteriores, escuchamos a escondidas una conversación
privada entre Nicodemo y Jesús. En la oscuridad, Nicodemo anhela comprender qué hay detrás de los
milagros que Jesús obró. La oscuridad oculta su conversación a aquellos que no la entenderían. Como
fariseo destacado, no sería prudente que lo vieran con Jesús, pero como buscador de la verdad, corre el
riesgo.
Jesús trata de explicarle el misterio como un maestro a otro, pero Nicodemo no puede sondear los
secretos que solo conoce el que ha descendido de arriba. ¿Cómo es posible que comprenda lo que no es
de este mundo a menos que crea en el testimonio de Aquel que sabe? En lo que sigue Jesús contrasta la
vida y la luz con las tinieblas y el mal. Es la oscuridad que dos hombres se encuentran, pero es en la
búsqueda de la iluminación que Nicodemo ha venido. Al ser iluminados por Dios, se nos eleva más allá
de los confines de nuestro estado mortal. Sólo entonces podremos salir de la oscuridad de la ignorancia y
los rincones ocultos de nuestras vidas donde reside el mal.
Incluso los sufrimientos e injusticias de este mundo, que oscurecen la fe de tantos, demuestran la
necesidad de que yo confíe en el Reino de Dios. Cuando Dios entregó a su Hijo y permitió que lo alzaran
en la cruz, iluminó cada acto malvado, por pequeño o trivial que fuera. La muerte de Jesús en la cruz nos
dice: "Abre los ojos. ¡Mira lo que estás haciendo!’ El camino que recorremos nos lleva de la oscuridad a
la luz, del mal y de la muerte a la vida. Nos lleva al conocimiento del Dios que nos creó y nos levanta de
esta vida a la vida sin fin. Hemos optado por mirar la realidad de la cruz, por dolorosa que sea, en lugar
de cubrirnos la cara con nuestras almohadas, darnos la vuelta y volver a dormir.
En nuestra unión con Cristo, somos la luz del mundo, tú y yo. Somos las antorchas de Dios. Es
nuestro trabajo hacer brillar la luz de Cristo en cada rincón oscuro del mundo, mostrar el mal por lo que
es; para mostrar la oscuridad y llamar a la gente a la luz.

Lent is a time when we reflect upon the mystery of the
sufferings and death of Jesus Christ, so that we may be able
to enjoy more fully now and after our death the fruits of the
Resurrection.
The Lord is inviting me to have a little more ‘Inner
Silence’ in my life. He is probably inviting me to have the
experience of relying less on material things. As I look
around where I live, He is probably asking me quietly, “Do
you really need all these things? Can you manage on just a
little less, so that you would be a little more free to think
about and ‘seek the things that are above, where Christ is
sitting at the right hand of God, (Col 3:1), to have a little
more to give to the poor”.

“St. Joseph - Welcoming the Will of God”
Recently, the Holy Father has proclaimed a “Year of St. Joseph” who for many years has been
declared Patron of the Universal Church. The current Pope has issued a letter – “With a Father’s Heart”
whose purpose is to mention some of St. Joseph’s Christ-like qualities (a loving, obedient, hardworking
father who is creatively courageous, present in the shadows).
Joseph “accepted Mary unconditionally”. Trusting in the Lord, he accepts in his life even the events
that he does not understand, “setting aside his own ideas” and reconciling himself with his own history.
Joseph’s spiritual path “is not one that explains, but accepts” – which does not mean that he is “resigned”.
Instead, he is “courageously and firmly proactive”, because with “Holy Spirit’s gift of fortitude”, and full
of hope, he is able “to accept life as it is, with all its contradictions, frustrations and disappointments.
Joseph confronted reality with open eyes and accepted personal responsibility for it. For this reason, he
encourages us to accept and welcome others as they are, without exception, and to show special concern for
the weak.
A carpenter who earned an honest living, Joseph teaches us the dignity and joy of work. Work “is a
means of participating in the plan of salvation and an opportunity to hasten the coming of the Kingdom.
Those who work are cooperating with God and in some way become creators of the world around us”. In
light of rising unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pope calls everyone to “review our
priorities” and to express our firm conviction that no young person, no person at all, no family should be
without work”!
Children need fathers who will try not to dominate them, but instead raise them to be “capable of
deciding for themselves, enjoying the freedom and exploring new possibilities”. This is the sense in which
St. Joseph is described as a “most chaste” father, which is the opposite of domineering possessiveness.
Joseph, says the Pope, “knew how to love with extraordinary freedom. He never made himself the center of
things. He did not think of himself but focused instead on the lives of Mary and Jesus.
In a way, we are all like Joseph: a shadow of the heavenly Father, who “makes His sun rise on the
evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Mt 5:45). And a shadow that follows His
Son.

“St. José: acogiendo la voluntad de Dios”
Recientemente, el Santo Padre ha proclamado un “Año de San José” quien durante muchos años ha
sido declarado Patrón de la Iglesia Universal. El Papa actual ha emitido una carta - "Con un corazón de
padre" cuyo propósito es mencionar algunas de las cualidades cristianas de San José (un padre amoroso,
obediente, trabajador, creativamente valiente, presente en las sombras).
José “aceptó incondicionalmente a María”. Confiado en el Señor, acepta en su vida incluso los
hechos que no comprende, “dejando a un lado sus propias ideas” y reconciliándose con su propia historia.
El camino espiritual de José "no explica, sino que acepta", lo que no significa que esté "resignado". En
cambio, es "valiente y firmemente proactivo", porque con "el don de la fortaleza del Espíritu Santo", y

Por eso, nos anima a aceptar y acoger a los demás como son, sin excepción, y a mostrar una especial

Un carpintero que se ganaba la vida honradamente, Joseph nos enseña la dignidad y la alegría del
trabajo. El trabajo “es un medio para participar en el plan de salvación y una oportunidad para acelerar la
venida del Reino. Quienes trabajan están cooperando con Dios y de alguna manera se convierten en
creadores del mundo que nos rodea ”. A la luz del aumento del desempleo debido a la pandemia de COVID
-19, el Papa llama a todos a “revisar nuestras prioridades” y expresar nuestra firme convicción de que
ningún joven, ninguna persona, ninguna familia debe quedarse sin trabajo ”.
Los niños necesitan padres que traten de no dominarlos, sino que los eduquen para que sean “capaces de
decidir por sí mismos, disfrutar de la libertad y explorar nuevas posibilidades”. Este es el sentido en el que
se describe a San José como un padre “casto”, que es lo opuesto a la posesividad dominante. José, dice el
Papa, “supo amar con extraordinaria libertad. Nunca se convirtió en el centro de las cosas. No pensó en sí
mismo, sino que se centró en la vida de María y Jesús.
En cierto modo, todos somos como José: una sombra del Padre celestial, que “hace salir el sol sobre
malos y buenos, y llover sobre justos e injustos” (Mt 5, 45). Y una sombra que sigue a Su Hijo.

May the grace and peace of Jesus be always with us!
After the dramatic events of last year as the suffering caused by wars, natural disasters, and famine was
compounded by the pandemic of COVID-19, our faith calls us to live this new year 2021 in hope, even in
situations that are, humanly speaking, hopeless.
With the opening of the Lenten Season, we continue our reflection on the foundations that made Saint Vincent de
Paul a “Mystic of Charity” and more specifically on his relationship, and ours, with the disfigured Christ, which
we began to explore with the icon of the “Savior of Zvenigorod.”
As I wrote in last year’s Advent letter, the person of Jesus is at the heart of Vincent de Paul’s identity as a Mystic
of Charity and of the Vincentian charism and spirituality. Jesus is the reason for our lives and the person whose
way of thinking, feeling, talking, and acting becomes our life goal. Vincent knew the importance of a close
relationship with Jesus for personal conversion and effective ministry: “Neither philosophy, nor theology, nor
discourses can act in souls; Jesus Christ must be involved in this with us – or we with Him – so that we may act
in Him and He in us, that we may speak as He did and in His Spirit, as He himself was in His Father, and
preached the doctrine He had taught Him.”1
If the Icon of the “Savior of Zvenigorod” invites us to contemplate the face of Jesus, this Lenten reflection
invites us to a dialogue with the disfigured Jesus. Around 30
years ago, I came across a book written by a Spanish Jesuit, Ramón Cué, called, My Broken Christ. The cover of
the book pictured a broken crucifix. Christ was missing a leg, His right arm, and the fingers of His left hand; He
had no face and not even a cross. That image caught my attention, and its story made me desire such a
figure for myself.
My Broken Christ is about a priest who loved the artwork. One day, while visiting an antique shop, he saw a
sculpture, among many beautiful sculptures, pictures, and other pieces of art, that right away attracted his
attention. It was this broken crucifix. The work of a well-known artist, it still had its market value despite the
damage.
It so intrigued the priest that he decided to buy it and have it restored to its original beauty. The restorer
whom he approached realized that it would take much work to repair the image and thus asked for a large amount
of money. The priest could not pay such a high price, so he decided to take home the broken Christ as it was.
Looking at the broken Christ back home in his room, the priest started to feel uneasy, to the point of becoming
angry. In a loud voice, he asked, “Who could do such a thing to You? Who could take You so brutally from the
cross? Who could disfigure Your face so terribly?”
All of a sudden, a sharp disembodied voice said, “Be quiet! You are asking too many questions.”
The penetrating voice coupled with the mutilated body hardly brought the priest peace. Still, in a state of shock
after hearing Christ speak, the priest wanted to make Christ feel well and said with a trembling voice, “Lord, I
have an idea that You will like. I will find a way to have You restored. I do not want to see You so mutilated.
You will see how good You will look. You know You are worth everything. You will get a new leg, a new arm,
new fingers, a new cross, and, above all, You will get a new face.”
Again, a voice was heard and Christ said forcefully, “You disappoint me. You speak too much. I forbid you to
restore me!”
Surprised by the broken Christ’s energy and determination, the priest countered, “Lord, You do not
understand. It will be a continuous pain for me to see You broken and mutilated. Do You not understand how
You grieve me?”
The Lord answered, “That is exactly what I want to achieve. Do not restore me. When you see me this way, let us
see if you will remember my brothers and sisters who suffer and if you will grieve. Let us see if the sight of me
so broken and mutilated can be the symbol of the pain of others, the symbol that will cry out the pain of
my second Passion in my brothers and sisters. Leave me broken! Kiss me broken!”
The priest said, “I have a Christ without a cross. Some people may have a cross without Christ. He cannot rest
without a cross, and a personal cross can only be tolerated
with Christ. We started looking for a wooden cross for the broken Christ, where He can rest. We found
instead our cross. Put them together, and the broken Christ will be complete. The broken Christ lies on our
cross, and we will carry the cross together.”
Still uneasy, the priest continued his intense dialogue with Christ, saying, “I would like to restore Your
missing hand.” The Lord responded, “I do not want a wooden arm. I want a real hand of flesh and bone. I want

¡La gracia y la paz de Jesús estén siempre con nosotros!
Tras los acontecimientos dramáticos del año pasado, mientras que los sufrimientos causados por las
guerras, las catástrofes naturales y la hambruna se han agravado por la pandemia de COVID-19, nuestra fe nos
impulsa a vivir este nuevo año 2021 en la esperanza, incluso en las situaciones que son, humanamente hablando,
desesperadas.
En este comienzo de la Cuaresma, proseguimos nuestra reflexión sobre los fundamentos que hicieron de San
Vicente de Paúl un «místico de la Caridad» y precisamente sobre su relación, y la nuestra, con el Cristo
desfigurado, que comenzamos a considerar con el icono del
«Salvador de Zvenigorod».
Como escribía en la carta de Adviento del año pasado, la persona de Jesús está en el corazón de la identidad de
Vicente de Paúl como místico de la Caridad, en el corazón de la espiritualidad y del carisma vicenciano. Jesús es
nuestra razón de ser y la persona cuya manera de pensar, de sentir, de hablar y de actuar se convierte en nuestro
objetivo en la vida. Vicente conocía la importancia de la familiaridad con Jesús para la conversión personal y un
fecundo ministerio: «Ni la filosofía, ni la teología, ni los discursos logran nada en las almas; es preciso que
Jesucristo trabaje con nosotros, o nosotros con él; que obremos en él, y él en nosotros; que hablemos como él y
con su espíritu, lo mismo que él estaba en su Padre y predicaba la doctrina que le había enseñado».
1Si el icono del «Salvador de Zvenigorod» nos invita a contemplar el rostro de Jesús, esta reflexión de
Cuaresma nos invita a un diálogo con Jesús desfigurado.
Hace unos 30 años, cayó en mis manos un libro
escrito por un jesuita español, Ramón Cué, titulado
Mi Cristo roto
. En la cubierta del libro estaba representado
un crucifijo roto. A Cristo le faltaba una pierna, así como su brazo derecho y los dedos de su mano izquierda; no
tenía rostro y ni siquiera cruz. Esta imagen llamó mi atención y su historia suscitó en mí el deseo de tener una
representación semejante.
Mi Cristo roto cuenta la historia de un sacerdote al que le gustaban las obras de arte. Un día, cuando visitaba una
tienda de antigüedades, vio una escultura, entre muchos cuadros bellos y otras obras de arte, que llamó su
atención enseguida. Era este crucifijo roto. Se trataba de la obra de un artista muy conocido, seguía conservando
su valor comercial, aunque estuviera deteriorada.
Intrigó tanto al sacerdote que decidió comprarla y restaurarla para que recuperase su belleza
original.
El restaurador al que se dirigió se dio cuenta de que hacía falta mucho trabajo para reparar la
escultura y, así pues, pidió una gran suma de dinero. El sacerdote no podía pagar un precio tan elevado, así que
decidió llevar a su casa, en aquel estado, al Cristo roto.
De regreso a su casa, en su habitación, mirando al Cristo roto, el sacerdote comenzó a sentirse incómodo, hasta
el punto de encolerizarse. Con una voz fuerte, preguntó: «¿Quién pudo hacerte esto? ¿Quién pudo arrancarte
tan brutalmente de la cruz? ¿Quién pudo desfigurar tu rostro tan cruelmente?»
De repente, una voz viva y tajante dijo: «¡Cállate, preguntas demasiado!».
Esta voz penetrante asociada al cuerpo mutilado apenas calmó al sacerdote. Todavía impactado tras haber oído
hablar a Cristo, el sacerdote quiso reconfortarle y dijo con una voz temblorosa: «Señor, tengo una idea que te
gustará. Encontraré la manera de restaurarte. No quiero verte tan mutilado. Ya verás, serás hermoso. Tú
sabes que eres precioso. Tendrás una nueva pierna, un nuevo brazo, nuevos dedos, una nueva cruz y, sobre
todo, tendrás un nuevo rostro».
Una vez más, se oyó una voz y Cristo dijo con fuerza: «Me decepcionas. Hablas demasiado. ¡Te prohíbo que me
restaures!»
Sorprendido por la energía y la firmeza del Cristo roto, el sacerdote replicó: «Señor, no te comprendo. Va a ser
para mí un continuo dolor verte roto y mutilado. ¿No comprendes que me duele?»
El Señor respondió: «Eso es exactamente lo que quiero hacer. No me restaures. A ver si viéndome así, te
acuerdas de mis hermanos y hermanas que sufren y te duele.
A ver si así, roto y mutilado, te sirvo de clave para
el dolor de los demás, el símbolo que gritará el dolor de mi segunda Pasión, en mis hermanos y hermanas.
¡Déjame así, roto!¡Bésame roto!»
El sacerdote dijo:
«Yo tengo un Cristo sin cruz. Algunas personas pueden tener una cruz sin Cristo. Él no
puede descansar sin cruz, y una cruz personal sólo puede ser llevada con Cristo
. Hemos empezado a buscar
una cruz de madera para el Cristo roto, donde él pueda descansar. Pero hemos encontrado nuestra
cruz.

For a marriage ceremony at St. John the Baptist or Our Lady of Good Counsel, arrangements must be made with the Pastor at least 1 year before the wedding date. Infant Baptism Birth to 6 yrs.
Infant baptisms are celebrated by appointment only. Baptism preparation class for parents and Godparents are held on the Tuesday prior to the Baptism Sunday. Parent(s) or Godparent(s), please bring an original birth certificate of the child to the main office where you can begin the process of registration for this beautiful sacrament.

Are you baptized and received First Holy Communion but have not completed the Sacrament of Confirmation and you are over the age of 16? Our Confirmation only program begins in January in preparation for Pentecost Confirmation typically at the end of May or beginning of June.

La Diócesis de Brooklyn, a través de la Oficina de Formación de Fe, ofrece el Programa de Pre-Cana o Preparación Matrimonial. Este programa ha tomado su nombre del pasaje del evangelio en el que Jesús asiste a la celebración de las Bodas de Caná. Al convertir el agua en vino, Jesús nos enseña que toda boda tiene dos elementos: el de celebración y el de transformación.
