At the request of a parishioner we are including a copy of Fr. Merrill’s homily from Trinity Sunday in the bulletin this week:
Trinity Sunday, May 30, 2021 Father Charles Merrill
Introduction: W e have been celebrating historical events in the life of Christ and the Church: the triumphant entry into Jerusalem, the crucifixion, the resurrection, the ascension, the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. This Sunday and next we celebrate revealed doctrines: the Holy Trinity today, and the Body and Blood of Christ present in the Holy Eucharist next Sunday.
These teachings of the Church are not abstractions or theories, but realities that we need to be aware of to live in this world as we should, in order to live eternally with God in heaven where all mysteries will be made clear.
1. The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is at the very heart of reality and the heart of Christian revelation.
As a mystery it is unfathomable; but we should try to understand as much as we can about it, but it was revealed for our benefit. We can look at the Trinity first as the inner life of God: God is three persons, but there is only one God. Each divine person is consubstantial with the others, that is, each has the same substance, the same nature. Each of us human persons shares human nature with other humans—but it is not the same nature. We are not consubstantial with one another. Each of us has a share of human nature. Each Person of the Trinity has the same nature as the other two.
The two activities of spirit are proper to God as they are to us: thought and will; that is, wisdom and love. The first person of the Trinity is power and origin. The second person proceeds from the Father as his thought, his logos, his wisdom. The Son is God’s eternal idea of himself personified, made a person. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son as the love they have for one another. Our human thought and love are not independent persons. But because of God’s perfect and absolute power, his wisdom and love are persons in the Godhead, consubstantial and coeternal with the Father.
2. The word “trinity” is not used in the Bible. But the doctrine is found there.
The three Persons in the Godhead are revealed at four crucial moments of Christ’s life:
At the Annunciation, the angel told Mary: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High [that is, God the Father] will overshadow you, and therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God (Lk 1:35).
When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, and the Father’s voice was heard: “You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Lk 3:21).
At the Last Supper, Jesus said to his disciples: “I (the Son) will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor (the Holy Spirit), to be with you forever (Jn 14:16).
The day of his Ascension, Jesus sent the apostles forth, saying, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Mt 28:19).
3. God’s external works, like the creation, redemption, and sanctification of mankind, are all actions of the whole Trinity.
There are not three gods who have divided up the responsibility for the universe, and act sometimes as Father, sometimes as Son, sometimes as Holy Spirit. It is by the act of God, the holy Trinity, that we are created, saved, and sanctified. But we customarily ascribe certain aspects of salvation to each of the three Persons. And so we can say that salvation is
First, the loving act of God the Father, the Creator, of sending his only-begotten Son to redeem us.
In baptism we are adopted by the Father as his sons.
In the Eucharist we ask God the Father to accept and bless the gifts, and to make the offering spiritual and acceptable, so that it may become for us the Body and Blood of Christ.
As a Church, we are citizens of the People of God the Father.
Second, our salvation is the atoning act of God the Son, incarnate as Jesus Christ the Savior and Mediator, sent by the Father to make the sacrifice, the act of atonement by which our salvation is accomplished. We are restored to the good, so that we may begin a new life in a state of friendship with God.
In baptism we are incorporated into Christ, made part of the Body of Christ.
The Mass is a re-presentation, of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, in which the saving action is applied to us. It is through participation at the altar that we receive the Body and Blood of Christ, and are filled with every grace and heavenly blessing.
As the Church, we are members of the Body of Christ, the Son of God.
Third, salvation is the sanctifying act of God the Holy Ghost, the Sanctifier and Giver of Life, sent by Christ and the Father—indwelling, infusing into our souls the virtues, gifts, and fruits—
by which we are (being) made holy. The Holy Ghost animates the Church founded by Christ on Peter and the other apostles and built up by their successors, sent forth and commissioned to guide, teach, and sanctify the community within which salvation is mediated to the members.
In baptism we are regenerated by the Holy Spirit.
In the Eucharist the Spirit makes holy the gifts brought to the altar for consecration. We pray that we who are nourished by the Body and Blood of God’s Son and filled with the Spirit may become one body and one spirit in Christ. Joining the offering of our lives to Christ’s offering of himself, we are made holy and sanctified.
We acknowledge the Church to be the Temple of the Holy Spirit.
So you see how vital each Person of the Triune God is for our freedom, happiness, and eternal destiny.
God frees us from evil, restores us to good, and makes us holy—that is, whole and healthy. There is one God, but each of the Persons has his own part to play in our salvation. And so in every Mass, not just this one on Trinity Sunday, and in all our prayers, we give thanks and praise to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and we ask him to come and dwell within us, giving us eternal life by his grace.

Stewardship
Today’s Gospel presents St. Mark’s account of Jesus gathering his disciples for a last supper, revealing to them a new covenant established through his own blood that would be poured out as a sacrifice from them. As we move away from the pandemic, it is a good time to reflect on how we might renew and strengthen our covenant with the Lord and our Christian community.
