16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church July 22, 2018

Pastor’s Corner

Last weekend members of St. Mark Church

spoke at each of our Masses regarding our parish's

Religious Education and Faith Formation

Pro-gram. Our goal is to "Go and make disciples of all

nations" beginning right here at home. We also

had members of our St. Vincent dePaul Society

greeting parishioners on our church patio and

providing them with information about how our

faith community reaches out to those who are in

need. I hope that you will consider joining one of

our parish ministries, and sharing your gifts of

Time, Talent, and Treasure!

Next weekend we will be taking a more

global look at what the Catholic Church is doing in

various parts of the world, especially in developing

countries. Bishop Amal Raj from the Diocese of

Ootacamund, India, will be speaking at each of our

Masses, giving concrete examples of what the

Catholic Church is doing in one of the poorest

countries of the world.

India is true "mission country." The

major-ity of its population is Hindu, and most people,

regardless of their religious tradition, live in

ex-treme poverty. Jesus addressed His followers'

physical needs, by feeding them the loaves and

fishes. And He addressed their spiritual needs by

feeding them the Eucharist - the Bread of Life, and

the Cup of Eternal Salvation!

Missionaries in our world today follow the

example of Jesus by creating clean water systems.

establishing food programs, building schools,

hos-pitals, and orphanages, and then building churches

and faith communities in order to share Christ's

message of salvation. We look forward to hearing

what Bishop Amal Raj has to say about his work in

India, and we will be taking up a Second

Collec-tion in order to assist him and the rest of the

mis-sionaries in India. Please be as generous as your

means will allow.

During this week, let us take some time to

pray for the missionaries in our world, and to ask

God how He is calling us to be missionaries right

here at home.

May the Lord continue to bless us always

and in all ways,

Father Paul Spellman

FROM OUR PASTOR

alimentos, construyen escuelas, hospitales y

SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN

PROTEGIENDO A LOS NINOS

SPIRITUAL LIFE VIDA ESPIRITUAL

Go beyond just saying “no” to teach children about polite exceptions

Rules about politeness seem to be in contradiction to the rules we teach children about avoiding predators and responding to behaviors that make them uncomfortable. It’s important to expand on the idea of saying “no” when someone asks them to cross a boundary. Explain that there are situations where being rude is acceptable, if that’s what it takes, and help them under-stand that being polite has its limits.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Our St. Vincent de Paul Ministry has been a home for social justice here at St. Mark ever since it began in 2015. The Socie-ty of St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic lay organization that seeks to serve people in need in our local community regard-less of religious affiliation. Our Vincentians respond to re-quests for financial, in-kind, and referral assistance by meeting face-to-face with individuals and families who request assis-tance, including many who are homeless or in unstable hous-ing situations. They also regularly cook and serve meals at Safe Place for Youth, Turning Point, and the Cardinal Man-ning Center, the St. Vincent de Paul shelter in Skid Row. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul serves a critical need in our local community that other organizations and governmental programs cannot or do not fill. They have helped people in our local community with manage health care and dental expenses, pay for car repairs for people living in cars, provide deposits and first month’s rent for families displaced by condo conver-sions, offset funeral expenses, and most of all, offer company, companionship, and hope.

Your donations make it possible for us to help your neighbors here on the Westside. Our Vincentians are extremely grateful for the generous support of St. Mark’s parishioners, but they need your energy and talent as well! Our Vincentians have grown to love God more deeply by answering His call to seek and find the forgotten in our community, and you can too. To learn about becoming a Vincentian or to request assistance, leave a message at 424-272-1629 or email stmarksvdpvenice-ca@gmail.com. Our Vincentians will also have a table on the patio on west side of the church every third Saturday and Sun-day at as many masses as they can cover. Stop by to leave a or take a book at the religious book exchange (also ongoing in the church entrance), make a cash donation, sign up to volunteer at upcoming special events, or simply thank them for the work they do to advance social justice in the St. Mark’s community.
