Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Today, the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time has been designated by Pope Francis as the Second Annual World Day of the Poor. This day has been set aside in order to raise awareness about the poor.

In Pope Francis’ message for the Second World Day of the Poor, the Pope writes about the very beautiful, and well known Psalm 34 -- ‘The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor.’ Psalm 34 uses a phrase to describe the poor person and his/her relationship with God. The phrase used is “to cry.” Poverty cannot be summed up in a word; it becomes a cry that rises to heaven and reaches God. What does the cry of the poor express, if not their suffering and their solitude, their disappointment and their hope? We can ask ourselves how their plea, which rises to the presence of God, can fail to reach our own ears, or leave us cold and indifferent. On this World Day of the Poor, we are called to make a serious examination of conscience, to see if we are truly capable of hearing the cry of the poor. This coming Thursday, November 22nd, is Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving Day is day set aside, not by the church, but rather by the country on which we consciously give thanks to God for the many blessings God has given us. We have to be conscious of our blessings, otherwise they can so easily be taken for granted. It was in the year 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving to be a national holiday, and it has been celebrated religiously ever since. I say that it is celebrated religiously because of the fact that more people come to Mass on Thanksgiving than on many holydays of obligation. There seems to be something very appropriate, and very necessary about giving thanks. On Thanksgiving Day, we all come together as one parish family to give thanks. On Thursday, there will be just one parish Bilingual Mass at 10:00a.m.

We continue our custom here at Ascension of asking parishioners to bring in canned foods or non-perishable goods on Thanksgiving Day. The food that is brought in on that day will be presented during the Mass. We do this in order to replenish our Food Pantry. We have a monthly food pantry. Food is distributed on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Recently, we were awarded a grant from Catholic Charities and so in January we will begin distributing food 2 times per month. We are grateful to be in a position of providing food to those in need. This, of course, is done through the generosity of so many good and generous parishioners. Since we will be giving out food on a twice a month, we will be going through food more quickly than we have in the past. Therefore, we are grateful for any and all donations. No food donation is too small, even a couple of cans of soup can be a tremendous help.

Today there is a second collection. For a century, Catholic Charities has been serving New Yorkers in need by providing a range of services that provide help and create hope for the most vulnerable among us, non-Catholics and Catholics alike. Catholic Charities has inaugurated the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice collection. This is not another second collection, but rather a transition of the already scheduled Catholic Campaign for Human Development collection. This change is being made in order to better assist parishes and local community groups with their own charitable and social ministries. A portion of the funds raised will be returned to the parishes in small grants to support local social ministry initiatives. We are now blessed to be a recipient of one of those grants. Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Hoy, el trigésimo tercer domingo del Tiempo Ordinario, ha sido designado por el Papa Francisco como la Segunda Jornada Mundial de los Pobres. Este día ha sido apartado para crear conciencia acerca de los pobres.

En el mensaje del Papa Francisco para la Segunda Jornada Mundial de los Pobres, el papa escribe sobre el muy bello y conocido salmo 34 – “El Señor escucha el clamor de los pobres.” El salmo 34 usa una frase para describir a la persona pobre y su relación con Dios. La frase usada es “clamar.” La pobreza no se puede resumir en una palabra; se convierte en un clamor que se lleva al cielo y alcanza a Dios. ¿Qué expresa el clamor de los pobres si no su sufrimiento y su soledad, su desilusión y su esperanza? Podemos preguntarnos cómo su súplica, que se eleva a la presencia de Dios, puede dejar de alcanzar nuestros propios oídos o dejarnos fríos e indiferentes. Este próximo jueves, 22 de noviembre, es el Día de Acción de Gracias. El Día de Acción de Gracias es un día apartado, no por la iglesia, sino más bien por el país, en el que conscientemente le damos gracias a Dios por las muchas bendiciones que Dios nos ha dado. Tenemos que estar conscientes de nuestras bendiciones, si no fácilmente pueden ser menospreciadas. Fue en el año 1863, cuando el presidente Abraham Lincoln declaró el Día de Acción de Gracias como un día de fiesta nacional y ha sido celebrado religiosamente desde entonces. Digo celebrado religiosamente por el hecho de que más gente viene a misa el Día de Acción de Gracias que en muchos días de precepto. Como estaremos dando comida dos veces al mes, estaremos acabando con la comida más pronto que en el pasado. Por lo tanto, estamos agradecidos por cualquier y por todas las donaciones. Ninguna donación es muy pequeña – aunque sea un par de latas de sopa pueden ser de gran ayuda.

Hoy hay una segunda colecta. Por un siglo, Caridades Católicas ha estado sirviendo a neoyorquinos en necesidad, proveyéndoles una variedad de servicios que proveen ayuda y crean esperanza para los más vulnerables entre nosotros, no-católicos al igual que católicos. Caridades Católicas ha inaugurado la colecta Campaña de Caridad y Justicia de Caridades Católicas. Ésta no es otra segunda colecta, sino una transición de la ya programada colecta Campaña Católica para el Desarrollo Humano. Este cambio se está haciendo para mejor ayudar a parroquias y a grupos comunitarios locales con sus propios ministerios caritativos y sociales. Una parte de los fondos recaudados serán devueltos a las parroquias en pequeñas subvenciones para sostener iniciativas de ministerios sociales locales. Ahora estamos bendecidos de ser recipientes de una de esas subvenciones. ¡Gracias por su continuo apoyo!

EXPANSION OF ASCENSION'S FOOD PANTRY

The Ascension Food Pantry, which has been run by the children in our Religious Education program, has been awarded a grant from Catholic Charities, "Feeding Our Neighbors". The grant is in the form of participation in the food distribution program, which will begin in December. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to feed more of the those who need in our community! Pantry distribution will be moved to the Center on the fourth Saturday of the month, beginning November 24. Anyone who needs groceries will be asked to register for the program. Please bring federal or state issued identification on November 24. Also please bring along a re-usable shopping bag, or your own cart, as we will no longer be distributing plastic bags.

We need volunteers for the initial registration on Saturday, No-vember 24, at 9:30 a.m. in the Center, to help get folks signed up to receive monthly groceries. We especially need volunteers who are bi-lingual; Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin. If you can help, please contact Robin Klueber, Director of Religious Educa-tion, at 212-749-5938 or by email
