Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

In the past few months our country has been riddled with protests, natural disasters, domestic terrorism, death, and that list unfortunately goes on and on and on. We have been witnesses to so much tragedy, devastation, and human suffering.

On the evening of Saturday, November 4th, we will offer a special Mass of Consolation at 5:30p.m. On that evening, we will combine the 5:00p.m. English Mass and the 6:15p.m. Spanish Mass, and have one Bilingual Mass which will be celebrated at 5:30p.m. At that Mass, we will pray in solidarity with the people of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Mexico, all the victims of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes who suffered devastating loss of life and a complete dismantling of infrastructure in the regions directly affected by recent natural disasters. The people of Puerto Rico are among the earliest Spanish-speaking communities to have settled in the Archdiocese of New York; and the Mexican community has been among the fastest growing in recent decades.

At this Mass of Consolation, we will of course pray as well for the 58 people who died, and for the 500+ people who were injured in the face of the most recent act of domestic terrorism in the Las Vegas shooting.

The protests that took place in Charlottesville in August, reminded us of the sad reality that racism is still very much a part of the world and society in which we live.

November is traditionally the month of All Souls, the month in which we pray for all our dead. Let’s come together as one parish family on Saturday evening, November 4th, and pray for all those who have died in recent months, particularly as a result of natural disasters and domestic hatred and terrorism. Jesus reminds us that where two or three are gathered in his name, there He is in our midst.

We are in the process of planning a mass and some kind of fundraising event so that as a parish, we might be able to really help out the people in Puerto Rico in a concrete way. Hopefully, more information will be available in the next bulletin.

NOTAS DEL PASTOR

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Durante los últimos meses, nuestro país ha sido acribillado por protestas, desastres naturales, terrorismo doméstico, muertes y, desafortunadamente, la lista sigue y sigue y sigue. Hemos sido testigos de tanta tragedia, devastación y sufrimiento humano. En la noche del sábado, 4 de noviembre, ofreceremos una misa especial de consuelo a las 5:30. Esa noche, combinaremos la misa en inglés de las 5 y la misa en español de las 6:15 y

tendremos una misa bilingüe que se celebrará a las 5:30. En esa misa rezaremos en solidaridad con la gente de Puerto Rico, las Islas Vírgenes y México, todas las víctimas de los recientes huracanes y terremotos que han sufrido devastadoras pérdidas de vidas y un completo desmantelamiento de la infraestructura en las regiones directamente afectadas por recientes desastres naturales. La gente de Puerto Rico está entre las primeras comunidades de habla hispana en haberse establecido en la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York; y la comunidad mexicana ha sido la que más ha crecido en décadas recientes.

En esta misa de consuelo, naturalmente rezaremos por las 58 personas que murieron y por las más de 500 personas heridas afrentando el acto de terrorismo doméstico más reciente en el tiroteo de Las Vegas.

Las protestas que tomaron lugar en Charlottesville en agosto nos recordaron la triste realidad de que el racismo todavía forma gran parte del mundo y la sociedad en la que vivimos. Tradicionalmente, noviembre es el mes de todas las ánimas, el mes en que rezamos por todos nuestros difuntos. Unámonos como una familia parroquial el sábado por la noche, 4 de noviembre y oremos por todos aquellos que han fallecido en meses recientes, en particular como resultado de desastres naturales y odio doméstico y terrorismo. Jesús nos recuerda que donde se reúnen dos o tres en su nombre, allí está él en medio de nosotros.

Estamos en el proceso de planear una misa y alguna clase de evento de recaudación de fondos para que, como parroquia, podamos realmente ayudar a la gente de Puerto Rico de una manera más concreta. Espero que haya más información disponible en el próximo boletín.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Put Your Faith in Action- - Please Support the Homeless Shelter The Holy Trinity-Ascension Shelter has opened for the season and will run each weekend until late Spring at Ascension School. Each Saturday and Sunday evening a team of volunteers provides meals, a safe place to sleep and friendship to up to 20 homeless men. The guests that come to our shelter are fully independent, many are employed, and they are in transition seeking housing. Volunteers are invited to join the team as cooks, overnight hosts, set-up crews, and greeters. This is a great opportunity for families or friends to engage in service together. Parishioners are also invited to provide financial support for the shelter. Again this year we will have par-ish wide clothing collections in the winter months. Pon tu fe en acción: apoya al refugio para personas sin hogar El Santuario de la Santísima Trinidad-Ascensión ha abierto para la temporada y se ejecutará cada fin de semana hasta finales de la primavera en la Escuela de Ascensión. Cada sábado y domingo por la noche un equipo de voluntarios ofrece comidas, un lugar seguro para dormir y la amistad de hasta 20 hombres sin hogar. Los huéspedes que vienen a nuestro refugio son totalmente inde-pendientes, muchos están empleados, y están en transición buscan-do vivienda. Los voluntarios están invitabuscan-dos a unirse al equipo co-mo cocineros, anfitriones de la noche a día, equipos de preparación y saludadores. Esta es una gran oportunidad para que las familias o amigos participen en el servicio juntos. Los feligreses también están invitados a proporcionar apoyo financiero para el refugio.
