Sunday Reflection
Ephphatha!” – that is, “Be opened!” These are the words of Jesus to the deaf man. In Jesus’ day, a deaf man was consid- ered to be of no use to society. Physical impediments were viewed to be symptomatic of individual or familial sin.
The lack of hearing also brought with it a speech impediment.
Living with disabilities in first century Israel would have filled a man with fear and anxiety in terms of security and the future.
“Be opened!” These are words of hope and words of healing given by Jesus to a man who hungered for belonging and secu- rity. .
The man experiences a new way of life. He is able to hear clearly and to express the thoughts of the mind and heart. When we were baptized these same words were uttered to us as the priest or deacon touched our ears. These same words, just like the man from the district of the Decapolis, bring us life and se- cure for us a destiny of hope and promise. Through baptism each one of us enters into a life that enables us to hear an alter- native wisdom than that of the world. We are asked to proclaim one faith to the glory and praise of God the Father. As we grow in Christian faith, we listen to words of healing, restoration and forgiveness. Today’s story of healing is very significant for the history of salvation because it took place in the Gentile world – a world deemed beyond God’s interest and favor.
When Jesus heals this man, he is showing that no one, ab- solutely no one, is beyond God’s love and concern. Why is this important to us? It is important to us because no person should ever be considered unworthy of our love and acceptance. If we have closed our minds and our ears to the needs of others be- cause of something they have said or done, we cannot ade- quately express a lively faith. Jesus continues to offer hope for others : “Ephphatha!” – that is, “Be opened!” Jesus encourages us to embrace the life that he lived and the compassion that he shared. The cries of the hungry and poor of the world fall upon deaf ears. Those who remain hidden because of prejudice and discrimination experience the muting of their voice because they are deemed unimportant. In the midst of these sinful attitudes that are contrary to the gospel proclaimed, the one from Naza- reth, cries out “Be opened!” Be open to his presence in the guise of the lonely, the forgotten and the unwanted. Who are these people?
They are the men and women of the road who, for whatev- er reason, wander up and down our highways – yes, the ones we see from time to time coming out of the woods with a sleep- ing bag rolled up under their arms. These are the ones who wander into food pantries looking for something to eat. These are the very ones with sun scorched faces who often ask for money for alcohol to dull their emotional pain. When we are confronted by these complex situations in life, we are asked to take a radical stance and allow the wisdom of Jesus to dictate.

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process for welcoming and initiating adults into the Catholic Church. The program is open to all per- sons, regardless of religious background, who seek to live their lives in the Catholic faith. RCIA welcomes people who have never been baptized as well as adults who were baptized in another Christian tradition and wish to become Roman Catholics. The RCIA team meets weekly from September through May.

Pilgrimage To Holy Land
The 4th degree Knights of Columbus Andrew D Mitchell Assembly #215 is hosting a 13day pilgrim- age to the Holy Land & Jordan next year from Jun 1022,2022. The Knights of Columbus are booking this pilgrimage through is L.P. Pilgrimages. Some of the highlights of this pilgrimage include:
x A visit to Petra in Jordan which is one of the seven wonders of the world.
x An opportunity to renew your wedding vows at the Wedding Feast of Cana Church.
x Touch the star of our Lord’s birth place at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
x Walk the Via Dolorosa to pray the Stations of the cross while on the way to the Holy Sepul- cher, the site of our Lord’s crucifixion.
x Sail the Sea of Galilee and visit the recently dis- covered St. Peter’s or Jesus’ boat.
x Dip your hand or wade in the River of Jordan to renew your baptismal promises.

During September, October and November, the parish schedule will be adjusted: A couple of weekends ago, I wrote in this column about my sabbatical and my leaving for sabbatical around the beginning of September. Be- cause of this, we will be losing three masses during the week. This means that there will be no mass on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings.
As of September 1, The new Mass schedule will be:
Monday: Mass at 8:00am Tuesday: there will be No Mass Wednesday: Mass at 8:00am
Mass in Spanish at 6:30pm Thursday: Mass at 8:00am
Friday: there will be No Mass
Saturday: there will be No 8:00 am Mass, but there will be Word-Communion celebration.
Confessions:4:00pm 5:00pm Mass
7:00pm Mass in Spanish.
Sunday Masses:
7:30 AM Mass 9:00 AM Mass 11:00 AM in Spanish
Confession: Schedule will be only Saturdays at 4:00pm.
Funerals: The parish office has a list of priests who might be available for funerals; please be patient while Father is on sabbatical.
Anointing: Hospitals have chaplains (Catholic priests) available for anointing in Rockford. In case of an emer- gency in town, the parish office will find a priest from a nearby parish.
