Santa María Magdalena, 22 de julio

Su nombre era María, que significa "preferida por Dios", y era natural de Magdala en Galilea; de ahí su sobrenombre de Magda- lena. Magdala, ciudad a la orilla del Mar de Galilea, o Lago de Tiberiades.

Lo primero que dice el Evangelio acerca de esta mujer, es que Jesús sacó de ella siete demonios, lo cual es un favor grandísimo, porque una persona poseída por siete espíritus inmundos tiene que haber sido impresionantemente infeliz. Esta gran liberación obra- da por Jesús debió dejar en Magdalena una gratitud profundísima.

A nosotros nos consuela esta intervención del Salvador, porque a nuestra alma la atacan también siete espíritus dañosísimos: el or- gullo, la avaricia, la ira, la gula, la impureza o lujuria, envidia, la pereza y quizás varios más. ¿Quién puede decir que el espíritu del orgullo no le ataca día por día? ¿Habrá alguien que pueda gloriar- se de que el mal espíritu de la impureza no le ha atacado y no le va a atacar ferozmente? Y lo mismo podemos afirmar de los de- más.

Pero hay una verdad consoladora: Y es que los espíritus inmun- dos cuando veían o escuchaban a Jesús empezaban a tembar y salían huyendo. ¿Por qué no pedirle frecuentemente a Cristo que con su inmenso poder aleje de nuestra alma todo mal espíritu? El milagro que hizo en favor de la Magdalena, puede y quiere se- guirlo haciendo cada día en favor de todos nosotros.

Amor con amor se paga. Es lo que hizo la Magdalena. Ya que Jesús le hizo un gran favor al librarla de los malos espíritus, ella se dedicó a hacerle pequeños pero numerosos favores. Se unió al grupo de las santas mujeres que colaboraban con Jesús y sus discípulos (Juana, Susana y otras). Lavaban la ropa, preparaban los alimentos; quizás cuidaban a los niños mientras los mayores escuchaban al Señor; ayudaban a catequizar niños, ancianos y mujeres, etc...

La tercera vez que el Evangelio nombra a Magdalena es para de- cir que estuvo junto a la cruz, cuando murió Jesús. La ausencia de hombres amigos junto a la cruz del Redentor fue escandalosa.

Sencillamente no se atrevieron a aparecer por ahí. No era nada fácil declararse amigo de un condenado a muerte. El único que estuvo junto a Él fue Juan. En cambio las mujeres se mostraron mucho más valerosas en esa hora trágica y fatal. Y una de ellas fue Magdalena.

San Mateo, San Marcos, y San Juan afirman que junto a la cruz de Jesús estaba la Magdalena. En las imágenes religiosas de todo el mundo los artistas han pintado a María Magdalena junto a Mar- ía, la Madre de Jesús, cerca de la cruz del Redentor agonizante, como un detalle de gratitud a Jesús.

Uno de los datos más consoladores del Evangelio es que Jesús resucitado se aparece primero a dos personas que habían sido pecadoras pero se habían arrepentido: Pedro y Magdalena. Como para animarnos a todos los pecadores, con la esperanza de que si nos arrepentimos y corregimos lograremos volver a ser buenos amigos de Cristo.

Los cuatro evangelistas cuentan como María Magdalena fue el domingo de Resurrección por la mañana a visitar el sepulcro de Jesús.

Esta mujer tuvo el honor de ser la encargada de comunicar la noti- cia de la resurrección de Jesús.

St Mary Magdalene (July 22nd)

Call her Mary Magdalene, or Mary Maudlin - her name comes from Magdala, the town she was born in, and not from her weepy reputation, acquired when she mourned at the tomb of her be- loved master, Jesus.

Was ever a saint more maligned? Confusion began to surround her very early on. It was clear from the NT that she was the woman whom Jesus had delivered from 7 demons and who came to love and follow him. She is identified in a list of women who financially provided for Jesus and the disciples out of their re- sources. She was present at the crucifixion, and was the first to find the empty tomb and meet the risen Christ on Easter morning.

But beyond that, there’s no shortage of legends about her. Often she is identified as a notorious former prostitute, but there is noth- ing in the Bible that backs up this rumor. Frequently people iden- tify her with the sinful woman from the city who anointed Jesus’

feet with ointment and wiped them with her hair. But there are no clues in the Bible text to the identity of that woman, and no rea- son to believe that it might be Mary Magdalene. At times, she has been confused with Mary of Bethany, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, but biblically Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalene are 2 different people.

Well, she wasn’t a prostitute, probably didn’t anoint Jesus’ feet, wasn’t married to Jesus and didn’t write the Fourth Gospel. So what do we really know about Mary Magdalene? Very little of her life is known to us from the stories of the Bible. We simply don’t know a lot of the things that we wish we knew.

And beyond the NT there were further mysteries. Early legends had her living in Ephesus with St John and dying in Constantin- ople; but it was also said that she with several others sailed from Palestine across the Mediterranean to France and landed at the place called Les Saintes Maries de la Mer. She is said to have gone into holy seclusion there, and died. In the 11^th century the wondrous Basilica of the Madeleine was built in her honor at Vé- zelay, France.

In the spiritual tradition she is the model penitent and contempla- tive. She crosses so many boundaries: theology, literature, gender studies, cultural history, social anthropology, psychoanalysis. Of the making of books about her there is no end - and in recent times, films.

She clearly stands out in the gospels as a woman in a world of men, not uniquely by any means, but more sharply drawn than any of the others, even the Blessed Virgin herself.

Mary Magdalene loved Jesus deeply - maybe more deeply than anyone else, apart from his mother. She held an important place in his life and ministry - so much so, we can even call her a Be- loved Disciple.

In the 4^th gospel she is the first to recognize the Risen Lord and to speak with him. St Bernard of Clairvaux called Mary Magdalene the ‘Apostle to the Apostles’, because of her role in telling Jesus’

disciples about the empty tomb.

Though she’s gotten a bad rap throughout the years, Mary Mag- dalene has a lot to teach us about how to love Jesus. Wait on Je- sus persistently. Search for Jesus sincerely. Enthusiastically tell others about Jesus. And our devotion to Jesus will shine forth in everything we do.
