General Information
About the Rite
Date and Location:
The Rite will be held on Sunday, February 22 and Sunday, March 1, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception - 400 Michigan Avenue, Northeast Washington, DC. 20017.
Parishes are to attend the Rite according to the Parish assignment.
Time:
The Rite will begin at 3:00 pm and will last until approximately 4:30 pm. A light reception will follow in Memorial Hall, on the lower level of the Shrine.
Online Registration:
Parish coordinators should register their participants with the link for the online registration available at www.adw.org - click on EDUCATION, then RCIA, and then RCIA LOGIN, or you can use this direct link: www.adw.org/rcia and then proceed to use RCIA LOGIN.
The registration deadline is Monday, January 19. Parishes that register after Monday, January 19 will be assigned seating after other parishes and the names of the elect and candidates will not be included in the program or the Catholic Standard and El Pregonero.

Sobre el Rito
Fecha y Lugar:
El Rito será celebrado el domingo 22 de febrero y el domingo 1 de marzo, en la Basílica del Santuario Nacional de la Inmaculada Concepción- 400 Michigan Avenue, Northeast, Washington, DC 20017.
Las parroquias deben asistir al Rito de acuerdo a la fecha asignada.
Horario:
El Rito empieza a las 3:00pm y dura hasta aproximadamente las 4:30pm seguido de una pequeña recepción en el Memorial Hall, en el nivel bajo del Santuario.
Inscripción por Internet:

This Rite is not a Mass.
The Rite begins with a Liturgy of the Word followed by the Celebration of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion. Those obliged to attend Mass should do so at another time during the day.
Who participates in this rite?
1. Catechumens:
Persons preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
2. Candidates for Full Communion:
Persons who were baptized in another Christian denomination and are preparing to be received into full communion with the Catholic Church through Confirmation and Eucharist.
3. Candidates for Completion of Initiation: Baptized Catholics who have received neither Confirmation nor Eucharist (see RCIA n. 446) and baptized Catholics who were confirmed as infants but who have not received Eucharist.
What about Catholics who are
preparing for Confirmation only?
Catholics who are preparing to receive only the Sacrament of Confirmation do not participate in the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion. They would normally do so either at a special archdiocesan Mass with Cardinal Wuerl on Pentecost Sunday, May 24, 2015 at St. Matthew’s Cathedral or at their parish when the Cardinal or his delegate comes to administer the sacrament.
El Rito no es una Misa.
El Rito empieza con la Liturgia de la Palabra seguido por la celebración de la Elección y del Llamado a la Conversión Continua. Las personas deben ir a Misa en otro horario.
¿Quienes participan en el rito?
1. Catecúmenos:
Las personas que se preparan para los sacramentos de bautismo, confirmación y Eucaristía.
2. Candidatos a la Plena Comunión:
Las personas bautizadas en otra denominación Cristianas y que se preparan para ser recibidas en la plena comunión con la Iglesia Católica a través de la confirmación y la Eucaristía.
3. Candidatos a Completar la Iniciación: Los bautizados católicos que no han celebrado la confirmación y la Eucaristía (RICA n.446) y los bautizados católicos que fueron confirmados como infantes pero que no han celebrado la Eucaristía.
¿Qué pasa con los católicos que se
preparan sólo para la confirmación?
Los católicos que solamente se preparan para el Sacramento de la Confirmación, no participan del Rito de Elección y del Llamado a la Conversión Continua. Ellos participan en la celebración de la misa arquidiocesana con el Cardenal Wuerl el domingo de Pentecostés, 24 de mayo del 2015 en la Catedral de San Mateo o en su parroquia, cuando el Cardenal o su delegado llegan a administrar este sacramento.

At the Shrine
Restrooms are located on the lower level of the Shrine (1) at the East front entrance (near the Gift Shop), (2) at the West front entrance (near the Book Store), and (3) near the Crypt Church.
Wheelchair Access:
If a catechumen or candidate uses a wheelchair, special seating will be reserved for him/her in the sanctuary. Please note this at Question 6 on the online registration form.
An Elevator is located near the East front entrance near the Gift Shop. Ask a Shrine usher or staff member for assistance when you arrive.
Cafeteria:
The Shrine cafeteria will not be open after 2:00 PM on the day of the Rite. There are vending machines in the cafeteria and tables at which you can eat if you wish.
Seating and Special Needs
Reserved seating:
Pews will be reserved in one block for each parish. The number of pews reserved will reflect the total number of registered catechumens, candidates, godparents, and sponsors from your parish.
Please respect other parishes’ reserved seating. Do not allow your group to sit in pews reserved for another parish. As a matter of hospitality, please allow everyone to sit in the pews reserved for them. Once the Rite begins, you may fill in any empty spaces.
Finding your pews:
Maps and lists of seats reserved for each parish will be posted on the walls of the Shrine, or ask a volunteer for assistance. Each pew will be marked with your parish name and the number of seats in that pew that are reserved for you. Greeters will be available to help you locate your seats.
General seating:
Others who wish to attend (spouses, family members and friends, RCIA team members, etc.) are welcome. Due to space limitations, it is not possible to seat these persons in the reserved areas. Additional guests are requested to sit in the general seating areas indicated on maps posted on the walls of the Shrine.

Los Baños están ubicados en el nivel bajo del Santuario (1) en la entrada Este (cerca a la tienda de regalos), (2) en la entrada Oeste (cerca a la librería) y (3) cerca a la cripta.

Cafeteria:
La cafetería estará cerrada después de las 2 p.m. el día del Rito. Hay bebidas gaseosas y máquinas de refrigerios en la cafetería y hay mesas donde puede servirse, si desea.
Asientos y Necesidades Especiales
Asientos reservados:
Las bancas serán reservadas en bloques para cada parroquia. La cantidad de bancas reservadas refleja el número total de catecúmenos, candidatos y padrinos/ sponsors inscritos que asistirán de su parroquia.
Por favor respete los sitios reservados a las otras parroquias. No permita que su grupo se siente en el lugar reservado para otra parroquia. Como parte de la hospitalidad, por favor, respete la asignación de asientos. Una vez que el Rito haya empezado, podrá sentarse en cualquier sitio vacío.
Encontrando sus bancas:
Los planos y listas de sitios reservados estarán colocados, a la vista, en las paredes del Santuario, o pregunte a un voluntario. Cada banca tendrá un letrero con el nombre de su parroquia y el número de asientos reservados y asignados. Los anfitriones estarán disponibles para ayudarlo a ubicar su asiento.
Sitios no reservados:

Special needs:
If someone from your group is in need of a sign language interpreter, will be in a wheelchair, or has other special needs, please indicate this in the Question or Comments box in the registration. Requests for a sign language interpreter must be made before Friday, January 23.

Getting to the Shrine
The address of the Shrine is:
400 Michigan Avenue NE, Washington, DC 20017. If you need specific directions, please send a request to events@adw.org.
Metro: Use Metro as an alternative to driving to the Shrine (Red Line—Brookland/CUA station).
From the Brookland/CUA station to the Shrine: After passing through the gate, take the tunnel to the left. Ascend the escalator and walk up the hill toward the Catholic University campus.
Please note: It is a 10 to 15 minute walk uphill from the Metro station to the Shrine.
In case of inclement weather: Contact the Coordinator for Course Promotion and Hispanic Catechesis for updated information concerning the rite (301-853-5384).
Parking Information:
You may park in the following areas:
1. Shrine Parking Lot 1, to the left (West) of the Shrine and across the street (on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Harewood Road). Bus parking is available here.
2. Shrine Parking Lot 2, to the right (East) of the Shrine.
3. Along Harewood Road, to the left (West) of the Shrine.
Necesidades Especiales:

You may not park in spaces marked “Reserved” or “Handicapped” (without proper vehicle identification), or along yellow curbs denoting fire lanes. Vehicles parked in these spaces may be ticketed and/or towed.
Cardinal Wuerl’s
Easter Gift
Cardinal Wuerl presents catechumens/candidates for the sacraments of initiation with a gift. This year Catechumens/candidates will receive the Cardinal’s book titled The Sacraments: A Continuing Encounter with Christ. Copies of the Cardinal’s gift will be available
both in English and in Spanish. The book is available online only in Vietnamese, Korean and French at: www.adw.org/sacraments-book. Gift books will be distributed to the coordinators (or their designated representative only) at the Shrine Narthex (1:30 —2:15 pm).
- There will be four tables (two on either side of the center aisle), staffed by volunteers. Locate and proceed to the table marked by the letters of the alphabet indicating where your parish/ community books are being held.
Final Notes on Cardinal Wuerl’s
Easter Gift
If you are one of several coordinators/presenters from a single parish/community, please determine who will be responsible for retrieving your parish’s books. Once your parish’s books are recorded as having been distributed, you will not be able to receive any more books.
As a courtesy, remind your parishioners to refrain from asking Cardinal Wuerl to autograph books or programs.

El Cardenal Wuerl regala un libro a los catecúmenos y candidatos participantes de este Rito. Este año los catecúmenos y candidatos recibirán el libro del Cardenal titulado Los Sacramentos: Un encuentro continuo con Cristo. El regalo del Cardenal estará disponible en inglés
y en español. En nuestro sitio de internet www.adw.org/ sacraments-book, se pueden encontrar traducciones en Vietnamita, Koreano y Francés. Los libros serán distribuidos a los coordinadores (o sus representantes designados) en el Nártex de la Basílica (de las 1:30 —2:15 pm).
- Habrán cuatro mesas (dos a cada lado del pasillo central), con voluntarios. Localice y proceda a la mesa marcada con las letras del alfabeto de acuerdo al nombre de su parroquia y ahí encontrará los libros de su parroquia/ comunidad.

Opening Procession
Parish presenters process into the sanctuary during the Opening Procession (each carrying the Book of the Elect) and are seated in the sanctuary throughout the rite.
Liturgy of the Word

Following the Gospel, the presenters remain standing until an MC directs them to be seated.
Celebration of Election
Masters of ceremony direct presenters throughout this portion of the Rite.
After the homily, the archdiocesan representative addresses Cardinal Wuerl and introduces this portion of the Rite. Then the presenters, standing with their books opened, come forward one by one to a microphone in the sanctuary to read aloud the catechumens’ names, saying in a clear, loud voice, “N. Parish,
from City presents [the presenter reads the
names of the catechumens].” (At the Shrine, the presenters will receive a card with the text so that they will remember what to say.)
As the names are being read, the catechumens and their godparents come forward to the sanctuary and are greeted by Cardinal Wuerl.

Parish Presenters are to report to the Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel (near the Southeast entrance) of the Shrine’s upper level by 2:15 pm, for instructions and to form the procession. Leave coats and other belongings in the pews reserved for your parish.
BRING BOOK OF ELECT WITH YOU

The candidates and their sponsors come forward to the sanctuary. (Due to the number of candidates, it is not possible to call each name or for the Cardinal to greet each candidate and sponsor individually. )
Affirmation by the sponsors and the assembly, and act of recognition. (At the Shrine, everyone will receive a program with the text so that they will know what to say.)
The candidates and their sponsors return to their pews.

Rite of Sending Information
Parish Rite of Sending:
The Rite of Sending may be celebrated at a convenient time prior, and in close proximity, to the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion (often at a Mass earlier on the First Sunday of Lent, at the Vigil on Saturday or during the previous weekend).
While the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion will take place on the First and Second Sundays of Lent, it is suggested that the parish Rite of Sending for all parishes take place on the First Sunday so that the Penitential Rite for Candidates (see RCIA n. 459) can be celebrated on the Second Sunday of Lent. If your parish has only catechumens, celebrate the Rite of Sending of the Catechumens for Election (see RCIA nos. 106-117).
If your parish has only candidates, celebrate the Rite of Sending the Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop and for the Call to Continuing Conversion (see RCIA nos. 434-445).
If both catechumens and candidates will participate in the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, use the Parish Celebration for Sending Catechumens for Election and Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop (see RCIA nos. 530-546).
If a catechumen or candidate is not able to attend the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, he/she should participate in the Rite of Sending to acknowledge God’s call and his/ her readiness for initiation at the Easter Vigil. If the person is a catechumen, his/her name should still be called at the Rite of Election.
Información Sobre el Rito de Envío
El Rito de envío en la parroquia:
El Rito de Envío se puede celebrar en una fecha próxima al Rito de Elección y del Llamado a la Conversión Continua (por ejemplo, en la Misa temprano del primer domingo de la Cuaresma, en la Misa Vigilia del sábado o el fin de semana anterior).
Aunque el Rito de Elección y del Llamado a la Conversión Continua se llevará acabo el primer y segundo domingo de Cuaresma, es preferible que el Rito de Envío tome lugar el primer domingo de Cuaresma para que el Rito Penitencial de los Candidatos (ver RICA n. 459) se celebre el segundo domingo de cuaresma.
Si sólo tiene catecúmenos, celebre el Rito de Envío de los Catecúmenos para la Elección (ver RICA nos. 106-117).
Si sólo tiene candidatos, celebre el Rito de Envío de los Candidatos para Reconocimiento por el Obispo y para el Llamado a la Conversión Continua (ver RICA nos. 434-445).
Si ambos, los catecúmenos y los candidatos van a participar en el Rito de Elección y del Llamado a la Conversión Continua, use la Celebración Parroquial para el Envío de Catecúmenos para la Elección y de los Candidatos para su Reconocimiento por el Obispo (ver RICA números 530-546).
Si un catecúmeno o candidato no puede asistir al Rito de Elección y del Llamado a la Conversión Continua, debe participar en el Rito de Envío para que reconozca el llamado de Dios y su disposición para su iniciación en la Vigilia Pascual. Si es catecúmeno(a), que se lea su nombre en el Rito de Elección.
The Book of the Elect:
At the Rite of Sending, catechumens inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect. Only those who are preparing for Baptism should sign their names in the Book of the Elect.
Remind candidates that by their Baptism, they are already a ‘new creation’ in Christ. They do not sign the Book of the Elect, since, as baptized Christians, their names are already written in the Book of Life.
When preparing the Book of the Elect to be signed: 1. Catechumens should sign their full name (please
write in the full name of a child or anyone else who is not able to do so for him/herself ).
2. If there are more catechumens’ names than will fit on one page, date the bottom of each page on which catechumens sign with the date of this year’s Rite of Election.
3. Please check previous years’ entries and add dates to the appropriate pages so that it is clear where each year begins and ends.
El Libro de los elegidos:
Los catecúmenos inscriben sus nombres en el Libro de los Elegidos en el Rito de Envío. Solamente las personas que se preparan para el bautismo firman su nombre en el Libro de los Elegidos.
Recuerden a los candidatos que por medio de su bautismo ya son una “nueva creación” en Cristo. Por tanto, ellos no firman el Libro de los Elegidos, ya que sus nombres están escritos en el Libro de la Vida por ser cristianos bautizados.
Cuando prepare el Libro de los Elegidos para ser firmado: 1. Los catecúmenos escriben su nombre completo.
(Favor de ayudar a las personas que no saben escribir y escribir el nombre completo si hay niños catecúmenos).
2. Si los nombres de los catecúmenos no caben en una sola página, ponga la fecha del Rito de Elección al pie de cada página.
3. Revise la información de años anteriores y ponga la fecha a las páginas para que tenga en claro cuando empieza y termina cada año.
