El aprovechamiento de esta asignatura requiere capacidad de lectura en inglés medio-alto y un nivel de

comprensión de inglés hablado suficiente para el seguimiento y la participación en las clases. Es

Conocimiento de los conceptos fundamentales para el análisis crítico del devenir histórico,

social, político y cultural de los países de habla inglesa

Conocimiento de los períodos históricos de la formación de las naciones de habla inglesa

Conocimiento de la aparición del inglés como lengua internacional y su relación con la

interculturalidad

Procedimentales/Instrumentales (Saber hacer):

Analizar y comprender las diferencias existentes ente las distintas comunidades que constituyen

los países de habla inglesa

Leer críticamente la bibliografía relacionada con los fenómenos culturales

Actitudes (Ser):

Curiosidad intelectual manifiesta en diversos aspectos relativos a la historia y cultura de los

países de habla inglesa.

Interés por conocer y entender la evolución de las sociedades de los países de habla inglesa

OBJETIVOS (EXPRESADOS COMO RESULTADOS ESPERABLES DE LA ENSEÑANZA)

Haber adquirido el conocimiento imprescindible de los aspectos históricos, lingüísticos y culturales

que han contribuido a la formación de Gran Bretaña como crisol de diferentes culturas y

civilizaciones.

Saber identificar lugares, hechos, personas y momentos relevantes en la historia de Gran Bretaña,

Escocia e Irlanda.

Saber relacionar y explicar hechos y formas de vida de la cultura británica en sus diferentes

expresiones regionales y/o nacionales.

Saber distinguir y analizar distintas épocas y modos de vida de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda,

Saber identificar y comentar críticamente distintos recursos bibliográficos y material gráfico

relevantes para la comprensión histórica de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda.

Poder analizar expresiones culturales y artísticas y su influjo en la ideología británica y/o irlandesa.

Saber distinguir y explicar los elementos procedentes de las colonias que han tenido un peso en la

identidad cultural y/o lingüística de Gran Bretaña.

METODOLOGÍA DOCENTE

This module’s teaching methods are primarily aimed at encouraging independent learning although

student participation as well as seminar attendance is essential. For each unit, there will be a

theoretical presentation of the main aspects that characterize the history of Great Britain which will

be followed by practical analyses of audio-visual material on these topics. This material will be

discussed in class.

Criterios

Se tendrán en cuenta el dominio por parte de los estudiantes de: (a) Contenidos detallados del temario.

(b) Capacidad de relacionar diferentes aspectos de la cultura de los países de habla inglesa en diferentes contextos históricos y geográficos, así como la influencia de los diferentes elementos foráneos que forman parte de la identidad cultural de los angloparlantes.

(c) Capacidad de expresar con propiedad las ideas que emanen de su reflexión sobre ciertos aspectos históricos y/o culturales.

La evaluación del trabajo desarrollado por los estudiantes en esta asignatura será el resultado de combinar varias calificaciones:

A. El examen final vale un 55% de la nota final de la asignatura.

B. Se considerarán la asistencia y la participación activa en las clases presenciales: 10%

C. Hay dos tipos de ensayo: uno de prueba y el obligatorio. El primero es opcional y consiste en escribir 1000 palabras que sirven como introducción y práctica para el ensayo oficial. Este ensayo debe entregarse en la semana 10 (habrá más detalles en SWAD).

D. El segundo tipo es un ensayo obligatorio de 2000 palabras que vale un 35% del total de la nota. _______________________________________________________________

You will be assessed on the following:

A. Your knowledge of the syllabus topics

B. Your ability to understand various socio-historical aspects as they appear in a variety of contexts. C. Your ability to properly express yourself in adequate academic English and to discuss such

socio-historical aspects in the written pieces you are required to produce to pass the module. Assessment:

Assessment is based on a combination of essay writing exercises and one exam according to the following ratio:

A. There will be a final exam worth 55%.

B. Attendance and active participation in class will also be taken into consideration: 10% C. There are two types of written work: formative and summative assignment. You will have the

option of writing an initial

1,000 word

formative piece (not compulsory) so that you can test your own abilities when writing an academic essay. This can be used as basis for your summative essay. Your formative piece is due in week 10 (more details provided via SWAD).

The second type is a compulsory 2,000 word piece worth 35% of the final mark. If you have written a formative essay, your tutor will have provided you with some guidelines as to how to proceed and how to improve the original piece.
