Pastor’s Corner

Last year an organization called SPY - Safe Place for Youth - moved in to the building next to McDonald's and began serving the homeless youth of community. When they first announced that they would be operating so close to private homes, there were a few complaints from the neighbors who indicated, "Hey, I think what you are doing is great, just NIMBY - not in my back yard!" But SPY held meetings with the families and businesses of the community, so a couple of us from Saint Mark went over to see what it was all about. The fears and concerns of some people were alleviated as their founder and staff members explained exactly what their goals were and how they planned to serve the youth who are going through such difficult times.

Once they opened their doors, the members of Saint Mark parish immediately stepped up and asked, "What can we do to serve these youth?" SERVE became the key word. As in serving meals! Now, each week, a group of Saint Mark members shop for healthy food and spend a couple of hours in the kitchen of our parish hall preparing a meal that is not only nourishing, but very tasty! And, is sending the message to the youth: We care about you! We see the face of Christ in your face! And you are our brothers and sisters!

As we got to learn more about what SPY was doing, we noticed that their clothing room had an abun-dance of new or gently-used shirts, pants, jackets, and shoes. What was missing? Underwear and socks! So here at Saint Mark we held our very first "Undie Sunday" in which we invited parishioners to donate new underwear and socks for the youth who are living on the streets. As a child, if I got underwear and socks for Christmas, I was disappointed. But, if you are a homeless youth, new un-derwear and socks are a true blessing!

Last Thursday SPY held an event in which they honored those who had helped them so much during their first year. Saint Mark Church was honored, as well as Saint Mark School for their participation in "Clothes for a Cause" and other programs that assist the youth of SPY. During the presentations we received a beautiful plaque that has been placed in the vestibule of our church. Be sure and stop by and take a look at it!

As you know, the homeless population here in Venice is growing rapidly, and the situations of the youth on the streets are getting much more complex each day. But Saint Mark Church has stepped up to share the Good News of the Gospel by our words and our actions!

So, next time you ask yourself, "What are we doing to help the homeless of Venice?" You can answer by simply looking in the mirror!

May the Lord continue to bless us always and in all ways,

Father Paul

FROM OUR PASTOR

SAFE GUARD THE CHILDREN

PROTEGIENDO A LOS NINOS Pool safety is about more than swimming

Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle un-comfortable situations. Although you may be watching close-ly to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For more information and a copy of the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited, email jvienna@la-archdiocese.org or call (213) 637-7227.

For particular help you may call Suzanne Healy, director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650 or Helene Hickey at 310-821-6612.

SPIRITUAL LIFE TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

An old and still vital treasure in our tradition is a document called the “Apostolic Traditions,” giving us a snapshot of church life in third-century Rome. Its author, Hippolytus, describes the liturgical life of the church and records the ac-tual texts of the prayers. The way he explained the various “orders” of the church was the basis for a major reform of the rites of ordination by Pope Pius XII in 1947, and later for the Second Vatican Council. Hippolytus tells us that a bishop had to be elected by the entire people, and that ordination had to take place on a Sunday in the presence of the people, the presbyters, and neighboring bishops. The bishop-candidate is ordained by the other bishops, who impose their hands on his head while everyone else keeps a profound si-lence, awaiting the outpouring of the Spirit. There is a prayer of blessing said by one of them, on behalf of all, asking for the Spirit and describing his ministry.

Later centuries layered new features on top of this liturgy, including the requirement for three bishop consecrators. To-day, whenever a new bishop is announced (election by the people is no more), a kind of genealogy is provided, tracing his pedigree through the consecrating bishops down through the centuries to Peter and the first body of believers. Every bishop today can trace his office through his consecrators back to the beginning in a tradition called “apostolic succes-sion.”

FOCUS ON THE MISSION

“There are so many things to do.” “We have so little time.” How many variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself?

Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working, searching, conniving, and worry-ing our way to “gratify[worry-ing] the desires of the flesh,” as Paul relates in today’s second reading, are really non-productive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ of-fers us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next.

Elisha, the prophet Elijah’s chosen servant, was slightly be-fuddled about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow.

Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples. He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow him. Now, not later.
