Our Lady of Good Counsel parish is a Roman Catholic Community of Faith founded by the Augustinian Friars in 1899.Called by God to proclaim and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our celebration of the Word and Sacraments.
Guided by the life of Christ, joined in Baptism, and inspired by the Grace of the Holy Spirit, we strive to embody the presence of God in the world today through worship, outward discipleship, and service.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme:
“Reluctant to Respond to…”
Today is the third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our theme this Sunday is our unwillingness
to respond or answer God’s call to serve him or help others. In our first reading today from the book of Jonah (3: 1-5, 10) we read about the call of Jonah to go and preach repentance in the pagan city of Nineveh, and the prophet’s reluctance to answer God’s call. This story talks directly to each one of us. How many times has the Lord has called us in the preaching or the extending of his Kingdom on earth we try to shy away, either because we feel not worthy or due to lack of preparation? Learn today that when the Lord calls you, He prepares you with the necessary graces you need.
In most cases, our call is not clear to us and maybe too challenging especially when it is about saying the truth or preaching about change and repentance. The constant call to preach change and conversion is most unsettling. We are more comfortable with being a settler than a pioneer; a hitching-post rather than a sign-post. Instead of hope, we hunger after sweet certainty. Yet to follow Jesus, we must be ever ready.

Tema: “Reacio a Responder a …”
Hoy es el tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario. Nuestro tema este domingo es nuestra falta de voluntad para responder o contestar al llamado de Dios para servirle o ayudar a otros. En nuestra primera lectura de hoy del libro de Jonás (3: 1-5, 10) leemos sobre el llamado de Jonás para ir a predicar el arrepentimiento en la ciudad pagana de Nínive, y la renuencia del profeta a responder al llamado de Dios. Esta historia nos habla directamente a cada uno de nosotros. ¿Cuántas veces nos ha llamado el Señor en la predicación o la extensión de su Reino en la tierra que tratamos de rehuir, ya sea porque no nos sentimos dignos o por falta de preparación? Aprende hoy que cuando el Señor te llama, te prepara con las gracias necesarias que necesitas.
En la mayoría de los casos, nuestro llamado no es claro para nosotros y tal vez sea demasiado desafiante, especialmente cuando se trata de decir la verdad o predicar sobre el cambio y el arrepentimiento. El llamado constante a predicar el cambio y la conversión es muy inquietante. Nos sentimos más cómodos siendo colonos que pioneros; un poste de enganche en lugar de un cartel. El Hijo del Hombre no tenía dónde recostar la cabeza. Entonces, es con el Cristiano. Siempre estamos en movimiento. Queremos llevar la paz de Jesús a otros durante nuestro viaje. Soy testigo vivo de esta realidad. Cuando me ordené en 1996, mi primera asignación fue a América Latina (Honduras) Un país del que nunca había oído hablar ni en la historia ni en el mapa. Sin embargo, tenía que irme ...
Como fue llamado Jonás, Dios nos está llamando sinceramente a cada uno de nosotros en este momento difícil de nuestra historia cuando la gente está perdiendo su fe en Dios debido a los desafíos que trae la vida. En nuestro mundo de hoy, muchas personas no solo están perdiendo la fe, se sienten solas y abandonadas. Si observamos bien, notará que hay algunas personas mayores que se quedan muy solas. La generación más joven no los encuentra interesantes y no le gusta escucharlos. Hay enfermos a los que nadie viene a visitar en el hospital. Algunos han estado allí durante muchas semanas y meses, tal vez, sus familiares y amigos al principio venían a verlos. Con el tiempo se aburrieron y ya no se molestaron. Sé cuántas veces he ido al hospital a visitar a los enfermos y a nuestros feligreses que están enfermos y no me dejaron entrar. Me siento frustrado y triste. Estas personas enfermas necesitan palabras de esperanza y aliento. En nuestro mundo difícil y devastador, Dios necesita más personas como Jonás.
Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, les aseguro, en nuestra soledad y angustia, no estamos solos. “Dios con nosotros” está ahí, tan cerca. Él está allí “Muy cerca”. ¿Cómo podemos alcanzarlo? Para ser franco, no se trata de cómo llegar a él. Porque Él mismo ha venido a alcanzarnos. La pregunta que debemos hacernos es, “¿Cómo podemos recibir la amistad que Él nos ofrece?” Jesús mismo nos dice cómo darle la bienvenida a nuestras vidas. Lo hemos escuchado hoy decir, “Ha llegado el momento y el Reino está cerca. Arrepiéntanse y crean en las buenas nuevas”.
Necesitamos responder. Toda resistencia debería desaparecer de nuestras mentes. El es real. Arrepiéntete y cree en lo que se espera de nosotros. Esta es la forma de acoger a Dios en nuestras vidas. Esta es la manera de abrirnos a la amistad que Él quiere entre Él y nosotros. Cuando Jonás predicó, la gente de Nínive se arrepintió y se vistió de cilicio y ceniza como señal de arrepentimiento y aceptación del mensaje de Dios. Aceptar y arrepentirse es apartarse de nuestros caminos perversos y caminos del mal. Arrepentirse es realmente volverse a Dios. Es triste y peligroso seguir nuestro propio camino. Hemos estado haciendo las cosas a nuestra manera. Ahora. Ya es hora de que nos volvamos y sigamos el camino de Dios. Necesitamos caminar con Él.
Imitemos a la gente de Nínive en nuestra primera lectura. “La gente de Nínive creyó en Dios ... Dios vio sus esfuerzos para cambiar su mal comportamiento”. Dios está esperando y mirando para ver nuestro cambio en nuestros corazones. Cambiar de los malos caminos puede ser difícil. Dejar de mentir y decir la verdad. Dejar de hacer trampa y ser honesto con la gente. Dejar de luchar y vivir en paz con nuestro vecino y muchos otros vicios. Todo esto está lejos de ser fácil. Podemos decir, “no podemos cambiar por nuestra cuenta”. Recuerde, Dios está con nosotros. Preguntémosle: 'Señor, enséñame tus caminos. (Salmo 25). (Continued from page 1)

As Jonah was called, God is earnestly calling each one us at this difficult moment of our history when people are losing their faith in God due to challenges life is bringing. In our world of today, many people are not only losing their faith, they feel lonely and abandoned. If we observe well, you will notice that there are some older people who are left very much on their own. The younger generation does not find them interesting and does not like to listen to them. There are sick people whom nobody comes to visit in the hospital. Some have been there for many weeks and months, perhaps, their families and friends at first were coming to see them. With time they got bored and do not bother anymore. I know how many times I have gone to the hospital to visit the sick and our parishioners who are sick and I was not allowed to enter. I feel frustrated and sad. These sick people need words of hope and encouragement. In our difficult and devastating world, God needs more people like Jonah. My dear brothers and sisters, I assure you, in our loneliness and anxieties, we are not alone. “God-with-us” is there, so near. He is there “Close at hand.” How can we reach Him? To be frank, it is not a question of how to reach him. For He, Himself has come to reach us. The question we need to ask is, “How can we receive the friendship He offers us?” Jesus Himself tells us how to welcome Him into our lives. We have heard Him today saying, “The time has come, and the Kingdom is close at hand. Repent, and believe in the Good News.”
We need to respond. All resistance should disappear from our minds. He is real. Repent and believe in what is expected from us. This is the way to welcome God into our lives. This is the way to open ourselves to the friendship He wants between Himself and us. When Jonah preached, the people of Nineveh repented and put on sackcloth and ashes as signs of repentance and acceptance of God’s message. To accept and repent is to turn away from our crooked and evil ways. To repent is really re-turning to God. It is sad and dangerous to follow our own path. We have been doing things our own ways. Now. It is high time we turn and follow God’s way. We need to walk with Him. Let us imitate the people of Nineveh in our first reading. “The people of Nineveh believed in God… God saw their efforts to change their evil behavior.” God is waiting and watching to see our change in our hearts. To change from evil ways can be difficult. To stop lying and speak the truth. To stop cheating and be honest with people. To stop fighting and live in peace with our neighbor and many other vices. All these are far from being easy. We may say, ‘we cannot change on our own’ Remember, God is with us. Let us ask Him, ‘O Lord teach me your ways. (Psalm 25).
