explicit consent of the victim.

Activism to address sexual violence against women goes as far back as the 1900’s. It began to gain traction in the
40’s and 50’s as social change grew.

Women in England were holding protests against the violence they were experiencing as they walked the streets at night. It was when ‘Take Back the
Night’ started. That movement spread to other countries.
San Francisco and New York City held the nation’s first ‘Take Back the Night’.
Activists wanted to have a week dedicated to sexual assault awareness. NCASA polled other coalitions in the country to choose a week. It was decided to
have the week during the month of April.
Some advocates began to hold events throughout the month of April.
Coalitions polled for teal to be the color to represent sexual assault awareness and chose a ribbon to represent awareness and prevention.
First observed Sexual Assault Awareness Month nationally.

will also have a movie screening of the documentary I Am Evidence. Join us via Zoom from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. to watch the movie.

The FVC will have a booth in front of the NAM building from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. giving out information while also showcasing jeans to promote the upcoming Denim Day event.
SAAM will end with some self-care. The FVC will teach some self-defense techniques for individuals to have. We will also step in the right direction with some Zumba fun! In 1992, an 18-year-old Italian woman was raped by her
45-year-old driving instructor who was taking her to her very
first driving lesson. He took her to an isolated road, pulled her
out of the car, and raped her. The case was taken to trial and
the Italian Supreme Court overturned the case stating
“because the jeans were so tight, she had to help him remove
them” which they believed was consensual sex.
To stand in solidarity with the survivor, we wear our tight jeans
on this day. Consent is an affirmative, enthusiastic YES.
Clothes, flirting, being under the influence does not equal
consent.

Toria graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2016 with a bachelor’s in
Sociology. For two years, she worked as a Sexual Assault Advocate for a domestic
violence and sexual assault agency in Iowa. In 2018, she moved back to Texas and
accepted the Violence Prevention Educator position with the Family Violence Center.
This position allowed Toria to reach the young people and provide them with awareness
and tools to seek healthy relationships. In 2020, she accepted the Sexual Assault
Services Supervisor position, which provide hospital accompaniment and direct client
services for survivors of sexual assault.

En el año 1941 una mujer italiana de 18 años fue violada por su
instructor de manejo de 45 años que la estaba llevando a su
primera lección de manejo. La llevo a un lugar apartado, la
sacó de carro y abuso de ella. El caso fue llevado a juicio y el
Tribunal Supremo italiano lo anuló el caso afirmando que
"debido a que los jeans estaban muy ajustados, ella tuvo que
ayudarlo a quitárselos" lo que consideraron sexo consensual.
Para solidarizarnos con la sobreviviente, usamos jeans en este
día. El consentimiento es un SÍ afirmativo y entusiasta.
La ropa,
el coqueteo, estar bajo la influencia no equivale a
consentimiento.
