Law versus values. That is a very difficult choice to place before people. Why can’t we choose both? Actually, that is the ideal.
Law is a legislated way that a group lives out a value. We value safe highways, and so we leg- islate traffic regulations, speed limits, and so forth. We value communal prayer, and so we de- vise liturgical calendars and worship ceremonies.
Usually, the way we live out a value changes more frequently than the value itself. However, it often happens that people become so attached to a custom or law, though unfamiliar with the underlying value it embodies, that a change of custom becomes very disruptive. This certainly happened in the Church after the Second Vatican Council, which took place in the 1960s.
This seems to be the source of tension in to- day’s Gospel scene. Washing hands before eat- ing was a ritual custom here, not just a hygienic one. It probably originated with priests who bloodied their hands while sacrificing animals.
Eventually, ritual washing became one of the 613 customs that Pharisees expected every Jewish man to observe. Referred to as “a hedge around the law,” such customs served to ensure the law itself was protected and would not be broken. Je- sus’ disciples did not observe this ritual, and so they were criticized.
Jesus immediately came to their defense. He did not disparage the value of appropriate ritual behavior. Rather, he accused his opponents of clinging to out-of-date practices while disregard- ing underlying values. Practices are external; val- ues are internal. Laws and customs can change;
fundamental principles and standards endure.

Entre la ley y los valores. Escoger entre ambos es algo que resulta muy difícil. ¿Por qué no elegir am- bos? En realidad, eso correspondería a lo ideal.
La ley es la forma legislada que refleja el modo en el que un grupo hace de un valor una vivencia.
Nosotros apreciamos que las carreteras resulten se- guras y, por lo tanto, establecemos regulaciones del tránsito, límites a la velocidad, etcétera. Nosotros apreciamos la oración en comunidad y por ello esta- blecemos calendarios litúrgicos y ceremonias para la adoración. Por lo general, la forma en que vivi- mos un valor cambia con mayor frecuencia que el valor en sí. Sin embargo, con frecuencia sucede que las personas se sienten tan atadas a la costumbre o ley -aunque no estén familiarizadas con el valor que ella representa- que el cambio de la costumbre se convierte en un gran trastorno. Esto fue, sin duda alguna, lo que sucedió en la Iglesia tras el Concilio Vaticano II, el cual se celebró en la década de los sesenta...
Ese parece ser también el origen de las tensiones reflejadas en el pasaje de los evangelios del día de hoy. El lavado de las manos era una costumbre rit- ual y no solo una costumbre higiénica. Probable- mente tuvo su origen en que los sacerdotes se en- sangrentaban las manos durante el sacrificio de los animales. Con el tiempo, el lavado ritual de las manos se convirtió en una de las 613 costumbres que los fariseos consideraban que todo hombre ju- dío debía observar. Consideradas "un seto sembrado alrededor de la ley", tales costumbres servían para garantizar que la misma fuera protegida y no fuera quebrantada. Los discípulos de Jesús no observaban ese ritual y eran criticados por eso.
Jesús salió de inmediato en su defensa. No era que él menospreciara el valor de una conducta ritual apropiada, era más bien que él acusaba a sus oposi- tores de aferrarse a prácticas desfasadas y no tener en cuenta los valores subyacentes. Las prácticas son externas, los valores son internos. Las leyes y las costumbres pueden cambiar; los principios y las normas fundamentales persisten.

I recently had a spirited discussion with a Protestant friend regarding Romans 8:26. He believes his “perfected prayer of being filled with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues” is addressed in that verse. What does the Church say about this verse?
Romans 8:26 says, “In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.”
I’d be careful not to interpret this passage too narrowly and limit its application only to the gift of speaking in tongues. In fact, its application is much broader and actually can be applied to all Christian prayer.
When it comes to praying effectively, all of us can use some extra help. We get that help from the Holy Spirit. Scripture scholar Joseph A. Fitz- mayer, SJ, maintains that the Holy Spirit actually plays an active and dynamic role in helping Chris- tians pray effectively by interceding on his or her behalf. In effect, the Holy Spirit expresses for us the inaudible prayers and groaning of our hearts, for which we have no words. So, when we pray, the Holy Spirit is actually present to us and makes up for what we are lacking in our prayer due to our own human weakness.

Recientemente sostuve una fogosa discusión con un amigo protestante con respecto a Ro- manos 8:26. Él cree que en ese versículo se hace referencia a la “oración perfeccionada consistente en llenarse del Espíritu Santo y hablar en lenguas”. ¿Qué dice la Iglesia con respecto a ese versículo?
Romanos 8:26 dice: “De la misma manera, el Espíritu también viene en ayuda de nuestra de- bilidad. Porque no sabemos cómo pedir correc- tamente, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos inefables.”
Yo tendría cuidado de no enfocar este pasaje con un punto de vista muy limitado y evitaría aplicarlo solo al don de hablar en lenguas. De hecho, su aplicación es mucho más amplia y realmente puede ser aplicada a toda oración cristiana.
Cuando de orar de modo efectivo se trata, todos podemos valernos de una ayuda extra.
Esa ayuda la obtenemos del Espíritu Santo. Jo- seph A.
