Hey now,
Where were you on 9/11? It is a question that for most is easy to answer, just like for
those who are older can say where they were when they heard the news of JFK’s assassination. It was an event that changed the world and its images became implanted on our minds and hearts. This coming Saturday is the 20th anniversary of that
tragic day, yet most can remember parts of that day as if they were yesterday.
I can remember one of the priests in the rectory watching the news and calling everyone to come to look at the television screen. We stood there transfixed on the view of the World Trade Center and the
gaping holes with the black putrid smoke pouring out and wafting upward. Most of the initial newscasts focused on New York City as there were people available to project the ongoing tragedy
onto our video screens, but later in the day we heard of the attacks on the Pentagon and the failed
attempt, but the tragic outcome, of the plane that was forced to crash in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Because of the time difference between here and the East Coast, I had to pull myself away from the news and go celebrate Mass at St. Pius X church in Flagstaff. Besides the usual daily attendees there
were many, many more just coming to pray and to find some solace on this day that affected everyone. In such dire moments we seem to reach out for God as our human frailty has no power to
understand what could have put someone up to something like flying a plane into a building. I wouldn’t doubt that some thoughts on that day and even in that church were filled with hate and
vengeance as that is part of our human nature.
Since that day much has changed in the way people fly, in that we have to go through numerous
points of security to prevent such things from happening again. While we say it is inconvenient, we understand the need for such measures. Maybe someday years from now we will look back at this
moment and see the requirement to use masks in airports and on planes, while bothersome is a way to keep us safe as well.
One thing that we need to reflect on is how we have changed since that day 20 years ago. Have we given in to the feelings of hatred and thus have condemned a whole religion because of the action of some extremists? Do we find ourselves feeling anxious around those who might be from the Middle East thinking that they just might be a terrorist? Have we spent any quality time picking up a book from a reliable authority to understand what exactly are the beliefs and practices of our Muslim sisters and brothers, or do we just rely on stereotypes to guide our comprehension of Islam?
Twenty years have elapsed and have we grown in grace and morality towards those who are different than us? We may cry out ‘we will never forget’, but we should also cry out that we want to follow Christ to lead us out of this gloom of hatred and division. We want Christ to show us what it is like to live in a world that has different cultures, religions, ethnicities, but is still united in one Spirit of love. Like so many did 20 years ago in coming to church, not for answers, but for Christ, may we also do so this coming week. After the tragedy of that day people from all over the world came together, offering help, guidance and even just a shoulder to cry upon. Since then we have gone back to our individual corners and looked with a apprehension upon one another believing that we have to fear the other.
May those people who perished in that terrorist attack not have died in vain by our perpetuating hatred that brought it about. May these next 20 years show that we want to try love and mercy as the
way out of the gloom of tragedy.

Hola a todos
¿Dónde estabas el 11 de septiembre? Es una pregunta que para la mayoría es fácil de responder, al igual que los mayores pueden decir dónde estaban cuando se enteraron del asesinato de JFK. Fue un evento que cambió el mundo y sus imágenes se implantaron
en nuestras mentes y corazones. El próximo sábado es el vigésimo aniversario de ese trágico día, pero la mayoría puede recordar partes de ese día como si fueran ayer.
Recuerdo a uno de los sacerdotes de la rectoría viendo las noticias y llamando a todos para que vinieran a mirar la pantalla de televisión. Nos quedamos allí paralizados ante la vista del World Trade Center y los
enormes agujeros con el humo negro y pútrido saliendo y flotando hacia arriba. La mayoría de los noticieros iniciales se centraron en la ciudad de Nueva York, ya que había personas disponibles para proyectar la tragedia en curso en nuestras pantallas de video, pero más tarde ese mismo día nos enteramos de los ataques al Pentágono y del intento fallido, pero el trágico resultado, del avión que se vio
obligado a estrellarse en un campo en Shanksville, Pensilvania.
Debido a la diferencia horaria entre aquí y la costa este, tuve que alejarme de las noticias e ir a celebrar la
misa en la iglesia de San Pío X en Flagstaff. Además de los asistentes diarios habituales, hubo muchos, muchos más que solo vinieron a orar y encontrar un poco de consuelo en este día que afectó a todos. En
esos momentos tan espantosos, parece que buscamos a Dios, ya que nuestra fragilidad humana no tiene el poder de comprender qué podría haber hecho que alguien hiciera algo como volar un avión contra un edificio. No dudaría de que algunos pensamientos de ese día e incluso en esa iglesia estaban llenos de odio y venganza, ya que eso es parte de nuestra naturaleza humana.
Desde ese día mucho ha cambiado en la forma de volar de las personas, en el sentido de que tenemos
que pasar por numerosos puntos de seguridad para evitar que vuelvan a suceder tales cosas. Si bien decimos que es un inconveniente, entendemos la necesidad de tales medidas. Tal vez algún día dentro de
unos años miremos hacia atrás en este momento y veamos el requisito de usar máscaras en aeropuertos y aviones, si bien es molesto es una forma de mantenernos a salvo también.
Una cosa sobre la que debemos reflexionar es cómo hemos cambiado desde ese día hace 20 años.
¿Hemos cedido a los sentimientos de odio y, por lo tanto, hemos condenado a toda una religión a causa
de la acción de algunos extremistas? ¿Nos sentimos ansiosos con aquellos que podrían ser del Medio Oriente pensando que podrían ser terroristas? ¿Hemos dedicado algún tiempo de calidad a leer un libro
de una autoridad confiable para comprender cuáles son exactamente las creencias y prácticas de nuestros hermanos y hermanas musulmanes, o simplemente confiamos en los estereotipos para guiar nuestra comprensión del Islam?
¿Han pasado veinte años y hemos crecido en gracia y moralidad hacia los que son diferentes a nosotros?
Podemos clamar "nunca olvidaremos", pero también debemos clamar que queremos seguir a Cristo para sacarnos de esta penumbra de odio y división. Queremos que Cristo nos muestre cómo es vivir en un mundo que tiene diferentes culturas, religiones, etnias, pero que todavía está unido en un Espíritu de amor.
Como muchos lo hicieron hace 20 años al venir a la iglesia, no para obtener respuestas, sino para Cristo, que también lo hagamos esta semana que viene. Después de la tragedia de ese día, personas de todo el mundo se unieron para ofrecer ayuda, orientación e incluso un hombro sobre el que llorar. Desde entonces hemos vuelto a nuestros rincones individuales y nos hemos mirado con aprensión unos a otros creyendo
que tenemos que temer al otro. Que las personas que perecieron en ese ataque terrorista no hayan muerto en vano por nuestro odio perpetuo que lo provocó. Que estos próximos 20 años muestren que
queremos probar el amor y la misericordia como una salida a la penumbra de la tragedia.
