Reflexión sobre 1ra de Samuel 16 y Juan 9
El registro bíblico del rey David es infinitamente fascinan- te. El primer versículo de las escrituras cristianas, Mt 1, 1 comienza así: "El libro de la genealogía de Jesucristo, el hijo de David, el hijo de Abraham"
¡David era un pastor, cazador, guerrero, rey, poeta, mujerie- go, profeta, adúltero, asesino, constructor, antepasado de Jesucristo, un hombre según el corazón de Dios!
Él fue el último de los ocho hijos de Jesé de Belén. El pro- feta Samuel fue enviado a Jesé para ungir a uno de sus hijos como rey de Israel. Siete hombres machistas se exhiben delante de Samuel, y el SEÑOR le dice: "No he escogido a ninguno de estos". Nadie sabía qué hacer. Pero por insis- tencia de Samuel, David es enviado. Y este joven resulta ser la respuesta. Tan tonto como pueda parecer, es precisamen- te David quien debe ser rey.
Jesé no veía las posibilidades de su hijo menor: sólo veía a un pastor. Aunque el profeta Samuel, no pudo ver el verda- dero potencial de David. Nuestra lección dice que fue el Señor quien intervino en la elección y cambió la dirección en la que iban las cosas.
Junto a esta historia de la llamada de Dios al joven David, tenemos la historia del ciego curado por Jesús. Jesús sana al que nació ciego - y está muy claro que sus sanaciones no son simplemente intervenciones médicas. Más bien, es una historia de iluminación espiritual.
La obra milagrosa de San Juan concluirá con todas las ar- mas en auge. En ningún otro lugar de los evangelios se lee de un pobre mendigo, hablando a las autoridades de la for- ma, como lo hace este ciego.
Las autoridades al principio lo insultan - y luego lo persi- guen. Pero Jesús lo está esperando - y comienza el magnífi- co diálogo con la pregunta, '¿crees en el Hijo del Hombre'?
El mendigo responde: "Señor, dime quién es, para que yo crea en él". Y la respuesta de Cristo no es ninguna sorpresa para el antiguo ciego - "tú lo estás mirando. Él está hablan- do con contigo'.
Juan baja la cortina junto al hombre que declara: 'Señor, yo creo'. Luego se arrodilla y lo adora. Esta historia puede haber comenzado como una historia de la curación de un mendigo ciego - pero queda claro, el verdadero problema es la ceguera espiritual. Y al final vemos esto, como una histo- ria de iluminación espiritual. El hombre nacido ciego, aprendió a caminar en la luz, mientras que los nacidos con la vista normal eligieron la oscuridad llena de miedo.
El se convierte en un representante de todos nosotros. To- dos estamos en tinieblas sin Cristo. Pero Cristo viene a sa- narnos - para iluminarnos.
Ahora es nuestra historia que se cuenta en la historia
del ciego de nacimiento - y otra vez, es nuestra historia la que escuchamos en la vida de David.
Como el ciego, las aguas del bautismo nos han abierto los ojos y vemos con los ojos de Jesús, quien es luz para un mundo oscuro.

Reflection on 1 Samuel 16 & John 9
The biblical record of King David is endlessly fascinating.
The opening verse of Christian scriptures, Mt 1, 1 begins like this - 'The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham'
David was a shepherd, hunter, warrior, king, poet, ladies’
man, prophet, adulterer, murderer, builder, ancestor of Jesus Christ, a man after God’s own heart! He was the last of the eight sons of Jesse of Bethlehem. Prophet Samuel was sent to Jesse to anoint one of his sons as king of Israel. Seven macho men are exhibited before Samuel - and the LORD says to him ‘I have not chosen any of these.’
No one knew what to do. But at Samuel’s insistence, David is sent for. And this young boy turns out to be the answer.
Foolish and silly as it may seem, it is precisely David who is to be king.
Jesse didn’t see the possibilities of his youngest son- he saw only a shepherd boy. Even Prophet Samuel, failed to see the true potential of David. Our lesson says it was the Lord who intervened in the election and changed the direction in which things were going.
Set alongside this story of God's call of young David, we have the story of the blind man healed by Jesus. Jesus heals the one who was born blind - and it’s made very clear that his healings are not simply medical interventions. Rather, it’s a story of spiritual enlightenment.
St John’s miracle play is to conclude with all guns boom- ing. Nowhere else in the gospels do you read of a poor beg- gar, speaking to those in authority, in the way this blind man does.
The authorities at first insult him - and then chase him away. But Jesus is waiting for him - and he starts the mag- nificent dialogue with the question, ‘do you believe in the Son of Man’?
The beggar replies, ‘sir, tell me who he is, so that I may believe in him’. And Christ’s response comes as no surprise to the formerly blind man - ‘you are looking at him. He is speaking to you ‘.
John brings down the curtain with the man declaring, ‘Lord I believe’. Then he falls on his knees and worships him.
This story may have started out as a story of the healing of a blind beggar - but it becomes clear, the real issue is spiritual blindness. And in the end we see this, as a story of spiritual enlightenment. The man born blind, learned to walk in the light, while those born with normal sight chose fear-filled darkness. He becomes a representative of all of us. We are all in darkness without Christ. But Christ comes to heal us - to illuminate us.
Now it is our story that’s told in the story of the one born blind - and again, it's our story that we hear in the life of David. Like the blind man the waters of baptism have opened our eyes and we see with the eyes of Jesus, who is light for a dark world.
