21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Mark Church August 26, 2018
Pastor’s Corner
Last week Pope Francis reiterated the
Catho-lic Church's teachings on the sanctity of all human
life, from conception to natural death. He explicitly
called for an end to the Death Penalty, which
contra-dicts the prayer which states, "Our Lord Jesus
Christ... who wills not the death of a sinner... but
rather that he be converted and live!" There are
many reasons to end the Death Penalty, but the
pri-mary one is that it violates the teachings of our Lord
and Savior. And, remember, Jesus was a victim of
the Death Penalty!
A couple of days after this announcement
was released, the Grand Jury in the State of
Pennsyl-vania released a 900 page report regarding
allega-tions made against 300 priests for sexually abusing
over 1,000 children and youth under the age of
18. In the years 2002 through 2007 we saw how this
impacted the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with
thou-sands of alleged victims who suffered at the hands of
those in position of power and spiritual authority.
This was headline news during my first year as a
priest, and it was something that I never expected
was happening in our Church.
Now, in 2018, we are hearing of more reports
of the abuse of children and young people who
looked up to these priests as messengers of God who
were responsible for sharing His message with their
parishioners and their wider communities.
On Monday morning Pope Francis issued a
letter in which he stated that, "We showed no care
for the little ones; we abandoned them." I am not
going to reprint the entire letter here, as it is available
on the Vatican website. What I do want to
empha-size is that sins were committed by people who were
supposed to be spiritual leaders. And, some of our
church's leaders chose not to act in a manner that
would protect future victims. And, as a result, many
more suffered further abuse that never should have
happened.
During this week, let us pray for all victims
of abuse by those in power, and let us also pray that
our Church leaders may use their brains, their hearts,
and their spines to make difficult decisions in
chal-lenging situations.
May the Lord continue to bless us always and
in all ways,
Father Paul Spellman
FROM OUR PASTOR

Get ready for back to school!
It’s that time of year again to pack up your children’s backpacks and send them off to make new friends and learn new things. Before the first day of school, parents should take steps to ensure their child’s safety while they’re in the care of teachers and school staff. Meet all the teachers and adults that your children will see regularly. Talk to your kids about basic ground rules for safety, privacy and security. For young children, shared bath-rooms are new, and they should know what to expect. Brush up on the school’s plans for security too.

HOUSEHOLDS IN GOD’S SERVICEIn the ancient world, “household” was a wide-reaching concept. When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be consecrated to service of God. In our world, we value allowing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples baptized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we encounter many “strangers” every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God.
