XXXIII SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
How would you spend your day if you knew it was the last day you would spend on earth? Undoubtedly, it would not be a normal day. The point of today’s Gospel reading is that the end-time is always im- minent. The good steward remains prayer- fully alert, ready to give an accounting; and living each day in the awareness of the
coming judgment and salvation. How do we exercise stew- ardship over our daily lives? Are we prepared to give an ac- counting? How will we allow Christ to work in and through us to prepare for the reconciliation of the heavens and the earth?

We have the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament every Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and First Friday from 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. You can also come to the church, Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. and be present before the Lord.

FASTING BEFORE MASS
Fast before Mass. It is Church law that one fasts for at least (1) hour before receiving Holy Communion. Water and medicine can be consumed, of course. The purpose is to help us pre- pare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.
No Food and Drink in Church. The exceptions would be a drink for small children, water for the priest or choir (if dis- creet) and water for those who are ill. Bringing a snack into church is not appropriate, because we want to set the church apart as a place of prayer and re lection.

YOUTH MINISTRY AND CONFIRMATION COORDINATOR
Saint Ferdinand Church is seeking a Coordinator for Youth Min- istry and Con irmation to enhance the ministerial leadership of our vibrant faith community. This position requires a willing- ness to interact with youth, the ability to pray/walk, and im- parting the treasure of the Catholic faith with them. The Coordi- nator will serve as a member of the Parish Staff with the prima- ry responsibility of the development and growth of the compre- hensive programs pertaining to Con irmation, Life Teen and Edge. The ideal candidate has to have a strong Catholic faith, enjoys working with teens and adults, and has excellent interpersonal, organizational skills and bilingual. THE REAL PRESENCE OF CHRIST
By the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ is present in the proc- lamation of God’s Word, in the Eucharistic assembly, in the person of the priest, but above all and in a wholly unique manner in the Eucharist. “This presence is called ‘real’—by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be ‘real’ too, but because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and en- tirely present” (CCC, no. 1374, citing Pope Paul VI, Mystery of Faith , no. 39).
Since the Middle Ages, the change of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ has been called
“transubstantiation.” This means that the substance of the bread and wine is changed into the substance of the Body and Blood of Christ. The appearances of
bread and wine remain (color, shape, weight, chemical composition), but the underlying reality—that is, the sub- stance—is now the Body and Blood of Christ.
The Real Presence of Jesus Christ en- dures in the consecrated elements even after the Mass is ended. Once Commun- ion has been distributed, any remaining hosts are placed in the tabernacle. If any of the Precious Blood remains, it is reverently consumed. The hosts are reserved to provide Communion for the sick, Viaticum (Communion for the dy- ing), and to allow the faithful to wor-
ship Christ in the reserved Sacrament and to pray in his presence. As a sign of adoration, Latin Catholics genu lect to the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the tabernacle or genu-
lect or kneel when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for prayer. Eastern Catholics show their reverence by a pro- found bow rather than a genu lection: “It is for this reason the tabernacle should be located in an especially worthy place in the Church and should be constructed in such a way that it emphasizes and manifests the truth of the real pres- ence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament” (CCC,no. 1379).
With the passage of time, reverent re lection led the Church to enrich its Eucharistic devotion. Faith that Jesus is truly present in the Sacrament led believers to worship Christ dwelling with us permanently in the Sacrament. Wherever the Sacrament is, there is Christ, who is our Lord and our God. Such worship is expressed in many ways: in genu lec- tion, in adoration of the Eucharist, and in the many forms of Eucharistic devotion that faith has nourished.

Desde la Edad Media, la transformación del pan y el vino en el Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo se ha llamado
“transubstanciación”. Esto quiere decir que la sustancia del pan y el vino se transforman en la sustancia del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. La apariencia del pan y el vino se mantiene (el color, la forma, el peso, la com- posición quı́mica), pero la verdad suby- acente —es decir, la sustancia— es ahora el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.
La Presencia Real de Jesucristo perman- ece en los elementos consagrados in- cluso una vez que la Misa ha terminado.
Una vez que se ha distribuido la Co- munión, todas las Hostias que quedan se guardan en el tabernáculo. Si queda algo de la Preciosı́sima Sangre, esta se consume reverentemente. Las Hostias se reservan para la Comunión de los enfermos, para el Viaticum (la Co- munión para los moribundos) y para permitir a los ieles que adoren a Cristo en el Sacramento reservado y que recen en su presencia.
Como signo de adoración, los católicos latinos hacen una genu lexión ante la Presencia Real de Jesucristo en el taber- náculo, o hacen una genu lexión o se arrodillan cuando el Santı́simo Sacramento está expuesto para la oración. Los católicos orientales muestran su reverencia con una incli- nación profunda en vez de una genu lexión. “Por eso, el sa- grario debe estar colocado en un lugar particularmente digno de la iglesia; debe estar construido de tal forma que subraye y mani ieste la verdad de la presencia real de Cristo en el santo Sacramento” (CIC, no. 1379).
Con el paso del tiempo, la re lexión reverencial llevó a la Iglesia a enriquecer su devoción eucarı́stica. Fe en que Jesús está verdaderamente presente en el Sacramento llevó a los creyentes a ofrecer culto a Cristo que habita con nosotros permanentemente en el Sacramento. Allı́ donde esté el Sac- ramento, allı́ está Cristo, quien es nuestro Señor y nuestro Dios. Tal culto se expresa de muchas maneras: en la genu-
lexión, en la adoración de la Eucaristı́a y en las muchas clases de devoción eucarı́stica que la fe ha alimentado.
La Liturgia Eucarı́stica contiene todo el tesoro de la Iglesia, ya que hace presente el Misterio Pascual, el acontecimiento central de la salvación. La adoración y devoción eucarı́sticas
luyen de, y llevan a, la Liturgia Eucarı́stica, la Misa.

THE HOLINESS OF GOD IN DAILY LIFE
When God appeared to Moses on Mount Horeb, he said, “The place where you stand is holy ground” (Ex 3:5). The sixth chapter of Isaiah describes the prophet’s vision of God and hearing the angels sing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord” (Is 6:3). Moses reacts to God’s holiness with awe, a deep rever- ence for the all-embracing majesty of God. Isaiah responds to God’s holiness with an awareness of the profound and in inite purity of God. Both men undergo a spiritual trans- formation that they attribute to their experience of God’s holiness.
The First Commandment is more than a reference to an ab- stract idea of God. It is an announcement of the presence of the most holy God, both in outward creation and within the human soul. His existence does call for our faith. Our sur- rounding culture is illed with many distractions that shut out the majestic voice of our holy and glorious God. St. Au- gustine, commenting on his troubled youth, speaks of this experience with these words, “You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would not have been at all.” But God was not simply a passive presence to Augustine, a dif i- dent lover wondering what to do. Augustine tells us that God spoke with a vigorous voice. “You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You breathed your fra- grance on me. . . . I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more” (The Confessions, bk. 10, no. 27). This is the best context for appreciating the importance of the First Com- mandment. As God did with Augustine, he does for us again—calling, shouting, trying to break through our deaf- ness, breathing his fragrance upon us.
Many, indeed, are listening. Numerous Catholics are seeking a deeper relationship with God through daily Mass, frequent reception of the Sacraments, the prayerful reading of Scrip- ture, retreats, spiritual direction, diverse forms of prayer, and devotional practices. With Augustine, they can say, “You touched me, and I burned for your peace.”

1. Most people in our culture say they believe in the exist- ence of God. What causes the disconnection between that belief and the behavior of many?
2. How do you ind that acts of faith, hope, and love bring you closer to God and make your behavior an act of praise to the Lord?

LA SANTIDAD DE DIOS EN LA VIDA DIARIA Cuando Dios se apareció a Moisés en el Monte Horeb, dijo: “El lugar que pisas es tierra sagrada” (Ex 3:5). El sexto capı́tulo de Isaı́as describe la visión que tiene el profeta de Dios y cómo escuchó a los ángeles cantar: “Santo, Santo, Santo es el Se- ñor” (Is 6:3). Moisés reacciona a la santidad de Dios con asom- bro, una reverencia profunda hacia la majestad de Dios que abarca todas las cosas. Isaı́as responde a la santidad de Dios con una conciencia de la pureza profunda e in inita de Dios.
Ambos hombres sufren una transformación espiritual que atribuyen a sus experiencias de la santidad de Dios.
El Primer Mandamiento es más que una referencia a una idea abstracta de Dios. Es un anuncio de la presencia del santı́simo Dios, tanto en la creación exterior como en el interior del alma humana. Su existencia sı́ llama a nuestra fe. La cultura que nos rodea está llena de distracciones que no dejan pasar la majestu- osa voz de nuestro santo y glorioso Dios. San Agustı́n, comen- tando sobre su problemática juventud, habla de esta experi- encia con estas palabras: “Tú estabas conmigo, pero yo no esta- ba contigo. Las cosas creadas me mantenı́an lejos de ti; y sin embargo, si no hubiesen estado en ti, no habrı́an existi-
do” (v.d.t.). Pero Dios no era simplemente una presencia pasiva para Agustı́n, quien era un amante tı́mido buscando que hacer.
Agustı́n nos dice que Dios habló con una voz vigorosa. “Me lla- maste, me gritaste y rompiste mi sordera. Soplaste tu fragancia sobre mi […] te he saboreado, y ahora tengo hambre y sed de más” (Las Confesiones, lib. 10, cap. 27 [v.d.t.]). Este es el mejor contexto para apreciar la importancia del Primer Mandamiento.
Al igual que Dios lo hizo con Agustı́n, también lo hace de nuevo por nosotros — llamándonos, gritando, tratando de romper nuestra sordera, soplando su fragancia sobre nosotros.
Muchos sı́ están escuchando. Numerosos católicos están buscando una relación más profunda con Dios mediante la Misa diaria, la recepción frecuente de los sacramentos, la lectura orante de las Sagradas Escrituras, los retiros, la dirección espir- itual, los distintos tipos de oración y las prácticas devocionales.
Con Agustı́n podemos decir: “Me has tocado y ardo con deseos de tu paz” (v.d.t.).
