Gregory-Lincoln Education Center Parents:
With the school year winding down, I wanted to take a moment to update you about some
changes that will be taking place on our campus beginning this fall.
One of our nearby schools — Wharton Dual Language Academy — is receiving an addition
and renovation as part of the 2012 Bond Program. To ensure the safety of Wharton students
and staff, their school will be temporarily relocated to our campus during construction.
The relocation will begin this fall, as we start the 2016-2017 school year. Our schools will be
mostly separated with Wharton housed in temporary buildings located on the field along
West Dallas Street, just north of our campus.
This move was one of several options considered and vetted by both myself and the
Wharton principal, as well as district officials. Ultimately, we felt it made the most sense for
both of our communities, as we are the closest neighboring campus with available space.
Though our student population is growing, I believe we have plenty of room to
accommodate our neighboring students with no impact on the education your students
currently receive. I am working closely with the principal of Wharton Dual Language
Academy, and we are both committed to ensuring academic continuity for our students.
At Gregory-Lincoln, our primary focus will continue to be the safety and academic success of
our students. All school activities, including athletics will continue as normal — we’ll just
have a few more students here on our campus.
I’m sure you may have questions about this plan and how it impacts our campus. I
encourage you to attend a community meeting at our school at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May
18, 2016. District and campus staff will be available to provide more information and answer
questions.
Wharton doesn’t plan to relocate to our campus until August, but they will host their first
meeting here on Monday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. This will give them a chance to learn more
about their transition plan and begin to get familiar with our campus. I hope you’ll join me in
welcoming them and making them feel at home — both on Monday and again this fall.

GENERAL
What is happening? Why?
Wharton Dual Language Academy is being relocated to allow construction and renovation work at their school, which is part of the Houston Independent School District’s 2012 Bond Program. The design stage is currently underway, and construction is slated to begin later this year. To ensure the safety of all students and staff, Wharton will be temporarily relocated until construction work is complete.
What does that mean for the Gregory-Lincoln campus?
Beginning this fall, Wharton Dual Language Academy will be housed on the Gregory-Lincoln Education Center campus. Students and staff will report to our campus for the start of the 2016-2017 school year.
Why was the Gregory-Lincoln campus selected?
The district looked at a variety of alternatives before recommending this transition plan. All proposals involved moving Wharton to a temporary location to ensure the safety of their students and staff throughout construction. After a thorough review, this option was selected as the best solution for all of our school communities. The campuses are just blocks away from each other, and Gregory-Lincoln has plenty of available space to accommodate temporary buildings for Wharton students.
Will students from different schools be separated or mingled together?
Though multiple schools may be located on one campus, each will be kept mostly separate. Wharton students will be housed in temporary buildings located on the field along West Dallas Street, just north of the school. Despite the physical boundaries, both principals — Wharton Dual Language Academy Principal Jennifer Day and Gregory-Lincoln Education Center Principal Nicole Ayen-Metoyer — are working together closely to develop a strong team and ensure the transition is as smooth as possible for all students.
How long will Wharton students be on our campus?
We expect Wharton students to be on the Gregory-Lincoln campus for the duration of the construction process. The relocation begins with the 2016-2017 school year and is expected to last up to two years. The new Wharton Dual Language Academy is expected to open in August 2018.
Will the installation of temporary buildings impact Gregory-Lincoln’s use of the field?
No impact is expected as Gregory-Lincoln doesn’t currently use the field north of the school.ACADEMICS

ATHLETICS/EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Will there be any impact on athletic offerings or extracurricular activities currently offered at
Gregory-Lincoln?
No. All athletics and extracurricular activities currently available at Gregory-Lincoln will continue to be available.
SAFETY
How do I know if my children will be safe?
Both campuses will continue to maintain the highest standards and expectations for appropriate behavior. Additionally, Gregory-Lincoln has a campus-based police officer who is assigned to the campus and on-site throughout the day. HISD crossing guards will assist with traffic and student safety at drop-off and dismissal times.
Will each campus have a visitor management system to ensure campus safety?
Yes.TRANSFERS
I’m not comfortable with this plan and no longer want my child to attend Gregory-Lincoln
Education Center. Are there other options?
We expect this to be a smooth transition and hope that you choose to stay in your current school community. However, HISD is a district of choice with a variety of educational options available to our students. Families who want to look at additional options and programs should contact the HISD School Choice Office. Please note that the district allows only one transfer per year.

Estimados padres de familia de la Escuela Secundaria Gregory-Lincoln,
Ahora que el año escolar está por terminar, quise tomarme un momento para informarles de
ciertos cambios que se llevarán a cabo en nuestra escuela a partir del otoño.
Una de las escuelas vecinas, la Academia Wharton, será renovada y obtendrá una ampliación
gracias al Programa de Bonos 2012. Por cuestiones de seguridad de los estudiantes y el
personal de la escuela Wharton, ellos se trasladarán temporalmente a nuestra escuela
durante la obra de construcción.
El traslado se llevará a cabo este otoño al inicio del año escolar 2016-2017. Nuestras
escuelas estarán separadas en gran parte, ya que Wharton estará en edificios temporales
ubicados en el terreno hacia la calle West Dallas, al norte de nuestra escuela.
El traslado fue una de varias opciones que se consideraron y que yo apoyé junto con la
directora de la escuela Wharton y los oficiales del Distrito. Por último, pensamos que sería
lo más sensato para nuestras comunidades ya que somos la escuela más cercana con espacio
disponible.
Aunque esté creciendo nuestra población estudiantil, yo creo que tenemos suficiente
espacio para recibir a los estudiantes que son nuestros vecinos sin que esto afecte la
educación que recibe su hijo. Estoy trabajando de cerca con la directora de la Academia
Wharton y ambas estamos comprometidas con la continuidad académica de nuestros
estudiantes.
La prioridad de Escuela Secundaria Gregory-Lincoln seguirá siendo la seguridad y el éxito
académico de nuestros estudiantes. Todas las actividades escolares, incluyendo los
deportes, seguirán como de costumbre, solo tendremos más estudiantes en nuestra escuela.
Sé que tendrá preguntas sobre este plan y cómo afectará a nuestra escuela. Le recomiendo
que asista a la reunión comunitaria en nuestra escuela el miércoles, 18 de mayo de 2016, a
las 6 p.m. El personal de la escuela y del Distrito podrá darle más información y contestar
sus preguntas.
La escuela Wharton no tiene planeado transferirse a nuestra escuela hasta agosto pero su
primera reunión se llevará a cabo en nuestra escuela el lunes, 23 de mayo a las 6:30 p.m.
Esto les dará una oportunidad de informarse sobre el plan de traslado y familiarizarse con
nuestra escuela. Espero que me acompañen en recibirlos y ayudar a que se sientan como en
casa el día de su reunión y en el otoño.

¿Se verán afectados los deportes o actividades extracurriculares que ofrece actualmente la
Escuela Gregory-Lincoln?
No. Todas las actividades deportivas y extracurriculares que se ofrecen actualmente en la Escuela Gregory-Lincoln seguirán disponibles.
SEGURIDAD
¿Cómo puedo saber que mis hijos estarán a salvo?
Ambas escuelas seguirán manteniendo los estándares y las expectativas más altas de seguridad y conducta. Además, la Escuela Gregory-Lincoln tiene un policía que está asignado a la escuela y está presente todo el día. Los guardias de cruce de HISD asistirán con el tráfico y la seguridad de los estudiantes durante las horas de entrada y salida.
¿Cada campus va a tener su sistema de administración de visitantes por cuestiones de
seguridad?
Sí.
TRANSFERENCIAS
No me siento cómodo con este plan y ya no quiero que mi hijo asista a la Escuela Secundaria
Gregory-Lincoln. ¿Hay otras opciones?
Esperamos que la transición sea sencilla y esperamos que decida quedarse en su comunidad escolar actual. Sin embargo, HISD es un distrito con un sistema de opciones y una variedad de opciones educativas disponibles para nuestros estudiantes. Las familias que quieran considerar otras opciones y programas deben comunicarse a la Oficina de Opciones Escolares de HISD. Por favor tome en cuenta que el Distrito solo permite una transferencia por año.
