Pastor’s Perspective
Brothers and Sisters,I am a firm believer that when a door closes, God opens another. There are numerous examples of this in scripture, like God par ng the waters of the Red Sea for the Israelites, or Jesus healing the blind and deaf despite the Sabbath law forbidding it; and, of course, Christ’s Resurrec on from the dead which opened the door to heaven. St Paul reminds us that, “Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts”. As we open the doors of our churches again for indoor worship, let us step forward with hearts full of hope in the Lord.
One of our parish staff members who has helped our com-munity step forward in hope throughout the pandemic has been Mat Troy. Since last March, Mat has coordinated our audio/visual needs, from determining the hardware needed, building our A/V booth, and filming the majority of our livestream services. U lizing this technology has been, and will con nue to be, important for connec ng us in Christ and inviting others to become members of His Church. There is an incredible amount of crea ve work required to bring about offerings like our Illumina ng Advent series, Ash Wednesday Service, and Sta ons of the Cross. Thus, we have adjusted Mat’s du es so he can share his talents, depth of knowledge, and teaching skills to coordinate an ever-expanding Audio/ Visual Ministry, while also continuing to serve our parish teens as the Coordinator of Teen Confirma on and Youth Ministry. I thank Mat for accep ng this new responsibility, and for embracing changes with hope. With hope and joy, we also congratulate Mat and his wife Kate, who welcomed twin boys on December 22nd!
Today other doors of hope are opening, too. A er Karen Grozak re red in January, Martha Plumb stepped into
full-me leadership as our Coordinator of First Holy Communion and Children’s Catechesis. As she did so, we evaluated our programs and determined that it was me to hire a full- me Cateche cal Administra ve Assistant who would not only support PreK and Elementary Faith Formation, but also Youth Ministry, Teen and Adult Confirma on programs. A er inter-viewing many qualified applicants, we hired Livier Guerra. Livier comes to us with strong office and support skills, includ-ing bilingual capabilities and event planning. She has also been an ac ve Holy Name of Jesus parishioner for many years. She and her husband, Joe, were married here in December 2018, too! Livier Guerra began working with Martha and Mat on March 1st.
Around the me that we began interviewing prospec ve administrative assistants, our parish secretary, Nancy Jimenez, received an incredible opportunity to advance in her desired career field. Although saddened, we accepted her resignation with profound gra tude for the huge impact she made for our parish over the last 2 years. Nancy worked relessly to incorporate new technologies while serving our people with grace. Many of you have appreciated Nancy’s smile, warmth, and willingness to help when calling or visi ng our parish office. We wish Nancy joy in her new workplace; and, we celebrate because she and her husband, Mauricio, will con nue to be ac ve members of our parish community.
God then opened another door. During our administra ve assistant interviews, we discovered another qualified applicant who could fulfill Nancy’s du es. Yolanda Cuevas comes to us with years of secretarial experience with the Rialto School District. In addition, Yolanda and her husband Louie, have been ac ve parishioners. You may have met them in Bible Study, Grief Support Ministry, or perhaps when arriving for Sunday morning Mass in the Olive Ave Field during the pandemic. Yolanda began her first day as our Parish Secretary and Recep onist on March 1st.
We are excited to welcome both Livier and Yolanda to our parish staff. Please be pa ent with them as they begin their du es. Changes are never easy; but this last year has demon-strated that when we are flexible and patient with one another when doors close, we can discover blessings where God has opened new ones. Let us remember that nothing is impossible with God and to hope in Him as we invite, nourish, give, and serve one another to glorify Christ’s Holy Name.

In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenant —as a prepara on for the bap smal covenant celebrated at Easter— occupies an important place in our cycle of Lenten readings. The no on of covenant as a rela onship between two par es carries with it an expecta on of mutual account-ability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of God’s protection, and it would forever permit them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, sum- marized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Command-ments. To be in a covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive rela onship, just as discipleship with Jesus —ritualized in bap sm— demands a total allegiance to him and none other. © J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The law was given through Moses (Exodus 20:1-17 [1-3, 7-8, 12-17]) or Exodus 17:3-7. Psalm — Lord, you have the words of everlasting life (Psalm 19) or Psalm 95.
Second Reading — We proclaim Christ crucified; the foolishness of God is greater than human wisdom
(1 Corinthians 1:22-25) or Romans 5:1-2, 5-8.
Gospel — Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up (John 2:13-25) or John 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]. The English transla on of the Psalm Responses from Lec onary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna onal Commission on English in the Liturgy Corpora on. All rights reserved.
