Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time | Vigésimoprimer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Dear families,
This is an exciting time of the year for
me! I am excited because soon we will be
starting our Reconciliation and First
Communion catechesis here at St. Peter’s.
We are also starting catechesis for adults
who would like to learn more about our Catholic Faith.
There is still room in the adult catechesis (taught in
English and in Spanish) if you would like to join us.
Please stop by the Parish Office or call the office at
503-777-3321 for more information.
Adult and children’s catechesis will start on Sunday,
September 2nd at 10:30 am. Please meet us in the
Church for introductions of our catechists and important
information. We will then tour the children’s classrooms
and the adult classrooms, ending with a light breakfast.

GIVING BOOK
On September 1 and 2 after each mass we will be passing out a booklet title “Giving”. To give you a little insight into the book, I will read a short introduction message from the author, Ben Scott.
The sub-title of the book asks the question; “Why and How Much Money Should I Be Giving to The Church To the poor.” Now, I know this is a sanative subject, but a very important subject, and every Christian should understand how giving effects their lives’ and the lives of the people around them. A number of years ago, the pastor in my parish asked me, to head up the annual sacrificial giving program. As unqualified as I felt I was, I studied all the information and scripture that was provided. The information I received working on this project opened my heart and there was no doubt, my wife and I were not giving what God was asking and realized we needed to follow the path our Lord was guiding us on and made a commitment to tithe, Giving 10% of our gross income to the church and to the poor.
Next, our Lord placed on my heart, to write a book about our giving experience. I started researching and reading books that led me to more scripture and information that gave me more depth and scope. There were 3 things, that really captured my attention and convinced me that this books information would be very important for all Christians. First, there was the overwhelming amount of scripture on the subject of loving our neighbor and giving to those in need. The second was the fact that in 1300 B.C. God gave to Moses the command to tithe. This is pre-ce-dent in the Bible and church history and remains relevant today. The third was that less than 10% of all Christians tithe. That means, out of 100 Christians, only about 6, are tithing. The Catholic Church is even less. Here we have this tradition of tithing for more than 3000 years and 94 percent of Christians today are not following this tradition. I believe this is a serious problem. I say this because of the emphasis our Lord Himself placed on Giving, plus the vast amount of scripture on the subject. I share much of this scripture with you in my book. You see, after Moses received the commandment of tithing from God, he instructed his people, it became part of their culture. The many generations after Moses who were born into this culture of tithing, complied with it. Unfortunately, it has lost its way and is not happening in our society today. There is no longer that culture of giving and both the church and the poor are suffering because of it. God gave the law of tithing to the Israelites to support the Levite priest and their missions. Our Church and the poor need the same support today but cannot achieve it properly when less than 6% of the church are tithing and many are not giving at all.

diezmando y muchos no están dando nada. Recuerde, Dar se convierte en una bendición, no en una carga, y le pido que lea este libro y que toque su corazón y cambie sus vidas como las nuestras.

“Do you also want to leave?” We must ask
ourselves if we really want to hear the good
news of his love for us and for others. Is the word of
God able to break into our consciousness, change us
and call us to hear the cries of the poor?
This month, through your gifts, the Society of
St. Vincent de Paul was able to hear the cries of the
poor by assisting families, providing food, utility,
