50 YEARS AGO, ON ST MARTIN’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY
“This Golden Jubilee is an opportune time for the parish to rise to the full stature of the family of God
by learning and living up to the ideals proclaimed in the Second Vatican Council.”
- From the 20 June 1966 letter by Most Rev. Joseph T. McGucken, Archbishop of San Francisco
Jubilee
Year of Mercy
St. Martin Parishioners prayers are with the friends and family of:
Rosie Lizama LIFE EVERLASTING
The second book of Maccabees tells a pow-erful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inflicted upon the brothers and their mother, is their belief in the promise of resurrection and life everlasting in God.
Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ's message of love, so that he might be delivered from other nonbe-lievers anxious to do him harm. The apostle is confident in such prayer, just as he is con-fident in the everlasting support of Jesus and God the Father.
And there's that "everlasting" word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting--albeit meaningless--question about the status of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that marriage isn't an issue for the risen chil-dren of God. More importantly, he assures them that their ancestors do live on in God, even as evidenced by the Father's words to Moses.

MODERN DAY SAINTS
Pope Francis celebrated Mass last Tuesday in Malmo, Sweden. The Mass, marking the Solemnity of All Saints, followed a historic day when the Pope and Lutheran leaders had a joint commemoration of the Reformation that started five centuries ago.
In his homily, the Pope said holiness is not seen so much in great deeds and extraordinary events, but rather in daily fidelity to the demands of our Baptism. One characteristic of the saints, he said, is that they are genuinely happy peo-ple – that’s why they are known as blessed. He recalled in particular the 14th century Saint Bridget of Sweden, co-patron of Europe, and the 20th century Saint Mary Elisabeth Hesselblad, a Swedish nurse whom he canonised in St Peter’s Square earlier this year.
Both of them, he stressed, prayed and worked to create bonds of unity and fellowship between Christians. He con-cluded with a suggested list of modern Beatitudes to inspire Christians today, including blessed are those who show closeness to the abandoned and marginalised, blessed are those who protect and care for our common home and blessed are those who pray and work for full communion between Christians. Amen. - Radio Vatican

VIDA ETERNA

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well edu-cated, looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quak-ers, and others. There were acts forbidding "mixed marriage" or sending children "beyond the seas" for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse.
In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecu-tion would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were re-pealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligi-ble for honors, and until the 1920s and the Republic, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens.
