2 ±March 29, 2020² 5th Sunday of Lent

Hello everyone… I hope you are all well wherever this article finds you!

During this first time of our settling into virus prevention, I hope you have found a good daily rhythm. This whole process will be a marathon, so we ask the Holy Spirit to bring us and all those around us patience and perseverance.

My freshman year of college, I started attending daily Mass. My motivation was a bit dubious. I wanted God to make my relationship with my ex-girlfriend work. Despite the motivation, my need was real. This person had opened me to a deeper sense of selflessness and joy that was now absent. I had little to do except look for the Lord and his Mother.

This daily Mass did two important things. First, it ordered my day. I had to look all over the city for a Mass and Mass time, and so I built my day, my studies, and everything else around it. Second, I started to connect to Jesus himself in his Body and Blood. He moved my faith deeper than I could ever have done.

I bring this up because a regular rhythm of prayer can be very helpful for your time at home. Whatever type of prayer you and your family choose, do it and find a regular time. Some folks are joining me at 12noon for the Angelus on Facebook (see St Patrick Catholic Church site). As a staff we’ve prayed at noon ever since the Bucket Project and doing it now with you, helps (me) keep track of time and pray for you all at midday. Feel free to join us.

During these coming weeks there will be no public participation at Holy Mass. It is opposite of my college experience but has a similar effect. Missing being together and receiving the Lord helps show how important the Holy Mass is to us. Ask Jesus to spiritually receive him each day, to help you live at home what you are living today.

We ask that God use the coronavirus time to believe more in him. Our prayer this week is: Holy Spirit, help me to believe Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

Blessings to all of you and know of my prayers, Fr. Mark

4 ± March 29, 2020² 5th Sunday of Lent

Raised From the Grave

Readings for March 29, 2020 — Fifth Sunday of Lent

Ez: 50:4-7; Psalm 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; Romans 8:8-11; John 11:1-45 or John 11:3-7, 20-27, 33B-45 Reflection Questions:

x

In this first reading from the book of Ezekiel, God promises the people that he will raise them from their graves. He asks, in return, for the people to follow Him. Where in our lives do we feel like we are not fully following God? What is preventing us from giving our lives to God and keeping us stuck in our own graves? What can we do to help us not only live, but also thrive?

x

The second reading from the book of Romans brings to mind a quote from Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J., “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” How do you reflect the Spirit of Christ in your daily lives? How is your Lenten challenge helping you to grow in the Spirit versus in the flesh?

x

In the Gospel reading from John, we hear the story about Jesus raising Lazarus from the tomb. Jesus’

delay must have made Mary and Martha question, “God, are you listening?” Although Lazarus was dead by the time Jesus did get there, it allowed Him to perform an even greater miracle than healing Lazarus of his illness — Jesus raised him from the dead! How often do we question if God is listening to our prayers? How can we be more patient to God’s timing and trust in His

decisions? How has your prayer life been this Lent? Where is there room for improvement?

Levantado de la Tumba

Lecturas para el 29 de marzo de 2020 - Quinto domingo de Cuaresma Ez: 50: 4-7; Salmo 130: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8; Romanos 8: 8-11; Juan 11: 1-45 o Juan 11: 3-7, 20-27, 33B-45

Preguntas de reflexión:

x

Lenten Symbols

The grapes and wheat are symbolic of the Holy Eucharist, the unbloody sacrifice that repeats daily at Holy Mass the bloody sacrifice of the Cross.

A Lenten Prayer

Gracious God,

during this Lenten season, as I ponder your word of life, may these words take root in my heart. Jesus, you told us

that we do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

As I ponder the word of life, may I hear God's word for me. Holy Spirit, open my heart that I may embrace the word of God and live it in truth and freedom.

Amen.

Una Oración para la Cuaresma

Dios misericordioso

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION April 7 marks the beginning of the 18th year of monthly Eucharistic Adoration at St. Patrick's. Our parish deeply appreciates the faithfulparishioners who commit to praying an hour each month for the needs of our world. They are a blessing to our parish and to the whole church. This month we ask that you take the time that you would have come in to the chapel, to pray at home. We will not be doing it for- mally at church this month. We pray that we may be able to get together on May 5.

Keep all of our prayers in your hearts.

Author Matthew Kelly says that while "God can com- municate through anyone and anything at any time, His preferred venue is still silence and solitude. Or perhaps it is just that in the silence… we are able to hear Him." What is God saying to you this Holy Week? How is the Holy Spirit igniting his fire in you? Join us for silent prayer.

Lenten Symbols

The pelican, according to an inaccurate legend, has the greatest love of all creatures for its offspring and will pierce its breast and feed them (this is the inaccuracy: it only appears to do this because of the way it holds its head) with its blood. This is a symbol of the Blood of Christ by which He redeemed us and with which He feeds us in the Holy Eucharist.
