ST. ELISABETH OF HUNGARY CATHOLIC CHURCH

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 19, 2022

THE GIFT OF THE EUCHARIST

Today we hear how Abram

encounters Melchizedek, “king of Salem . . . and a priest of God Most High” (Genesis 14:18). Melchizedek appears nowhere else in scripture, but is nonetheless significant. Psalm 110 declares of the great King David, “You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek,” a description later given (in the letter to the Hebrews) to Christ as High Priest.

Early Christians saw in

Melchizedek’s bread and wine the bread

and wine of the Eucharist; Paul’s account of the Last Supper (in today’s second reading) is the oldest one in scripture.

In the Gospel, Luke describes Jesus providing bread for a crowd in words similar to Paul’s, words still used by the Church: Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it. Together, these three readings reveal how Christian priesthood, Christ’s Real Presence, and the call to serve those in need are all found in the gift of the Eucharist.

DID YOU KNOW?

Open lines of communication are critical to child safety

A predator often works within a culture of silence to isolate and abuse children. When parents and other trusted adults fail to see the warning signs of abuse, silence can cause deep harm to young victims.

Sometimes, an adult who is willing to simply listen within judgment or disbelief can save a child from abuse. Communication and listening can be lifesaving.

For more information, read the VIRTUS article

“Our Kitchen Table: Keeping an Open Dialogue about Sexual Abuse” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

FATHER’S DAY NOVENA On the week of June 20th, we will begin a

Novena of Masses to be offered for all Fathers. Cards are available in the Church

vestibules or at the Parish Center office.

Please return the envelope with a donation.

PRAYER FOR FATHER

St. Joseph, guardian of Jesus and chaste husband of Mary, you passed your life in loving fulfillment of

duty. You supported the holy family of Nazareth with the work of your hands. Kindly protect those who

trustingly come to you. You know their aspirations, their hardships, their hopes. They look to you because they know you will understand and protect them. You too knew trial, labor and weariness. But amid the worries of material life your soul was full of deep peace and sang out in true joy through intimacy with God's Son

entrusted to you and with Mary, his tender Mother. Assure those you protect that they do not labor alone. Teach them to find Jesus near them and to watch over him faithfully as you have done.

Amen
