On the liturgical calendar, October 7th, is a day set aside for us to give special honor to Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary (When October 7th falls on a Sunday, the Sunday celebration takes precedence.) The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was formerly known as Our Lady of Victory and Feast of the Holy Rosary.
While May is the month dedicated to Mary, the month of October is the month of the rosary. According to an ancient account by fifteenth-century Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St. Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and doing severe penances because of his lack of success in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then gave him the Rosary as a kind of weapon, explained its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to others.
The Rosary had its origin in the liturgical mentality of former ages. Even at the present time, the rosary is often referred to as "Mary's Psalter." There still are Catholics who consider the 150 Hail Marys a substitute for the 150 psalms for those persons who neither have the time, the education, nor the opportunity to pray the Hours of the Divine Office (The Liturgy of the Hour, the official prayer of the church.) Thus "Mary's Psalter" is a shortened, simplified "breviary." While the rosary would be considered a devotion to Mary, the Rosary, in fact, is Christocentric setting forth the entire life of Christ, the passion, death, resurrection and glory. Of course, the Rosary honors and contemplates Mary as well, and rightly so, for the very same reason that the Liturgical Year does so: "Because of the mission Mary received from God, her life is most closely linked with the mysteries of Jesus Christ, and there is no one who has followed in the footsteps of the Incarnate Word more closely and with more merit than she" (Mediator Dei.) Meditating on this cycle of Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous Mysteries makes the Rosary not only a summary of the Gospel and of Christian life, but also a compendium of the Liturgical Year. Therefore, the Rosary still stands revealed as a teacher and nurturer of Christian faith, morality, and spiritual perfection. It fosters in various ways faith, hope, charity, and the other virtues, also mediating special graces, all to the end that we may become more and more like Christ. Right now we are living in troubled times, both in our country and in our church. Might I encourage you to offer some extra prayers, perhaps through the rosary, during this special month of October.

En el calendario litúrgico, el 7 de octubre es un día apartado para que nosotros honremos especialmente a María bajo el título de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (cuando el 7 de octubre cae en domingo, la celebración del domingo toma precedencia). La fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Rosario antes era conocida como Nuestra Señora de la Victoria y Fiesta del Santo Rosario.
Mientras que el mes de mayo está dedicado a María, el mes de octubre es el mes del rosario. De acuerdo con un antiguo relato del monje dominico del siglo 15, Alan de la Roch, María se le apareció a Santo Domingo en el año 1206 después que él había estado orando y haciendo severas penitencias por su falta de éxito combatiendo la herejía albigense. Meditando sobre el ciclo de misterios gozosos, dolorosos, gloriosos y luminosos hace del rosario no solo un sumario del evangelio y de la vida cristiana, sino también un compendio del año litúrgico. Por tanto, el rosario aun aparece revelado como un maestro y un nutriente de fe cristiana, moralidad y perfección espiritual. Fomenta de varias maneras la fe, la esperanza y la caridad y las otras virtudes, también mediando por gracias especiales todas, con el fin de que nos hagamos más y más a la imagen de Cristo.
En el presente estamos viviendo en tiempos turbulentos, tanto en nuestro país como en la iglesia. ¿Me permiten alentarlos a que ofrezcan algunas oraciones demás, quizás a través del rosario, durante este mes especial de octubre?

The RCIA at Ascension is a faith-sharing group accompanying adults in their preparation for the reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This process includes interactive discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. If you are consid-ering becoming a Catholic or are already baptized and would like to receive the sacraments of 1st Communion and/or Confirmation, the RCIA is the right place for you. RCIA meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM, in the Church rectory. RCIA also welcomes all Catholics who received the Sacraments, and seek to revive their faith and share their views of the Catholic Church.
