What Would Jesus Do?
After reading the sixth Sunday’s first reading, I felt sad and depressed. People found to have had skin conditions “which appears to be the sore of leprosy” were declared ritually unclean, sinful and ostracized from the community. They were made to feel worthless and forbidden from touching others or being touched. They were required to further humiliate themselves by informing everyone they came across that they were lepers and unclean. What a miserable life! I can’t imagine how grim their lives must have been, which is why Jesus’ words and actions towards the leper in the gospel are both powerful and radical.
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” -Mk 1:40-45
Aware of the man’s deplorable condition, Jesus pitied him. He broke the rule forbidding people from touching lepers. He showed that we must love people, no matter who they are or their condition in life. We must be ready to reach out to the downtrodden, the outcast, the vulnerable and the invisible people of our world. He showed that love transcends laws, and that what God desires is mercy, not sacrifice (Mt 9:3). “He stretched out his hand, touched him and said to him, ‘I do will it. Be made clean.’” Jesus also debunked another misconception that physical conditions are signs of inner sinfulness. Thus, he did not say, “your sins are forgiven”, but “be made clean”, be healed. In other words, a physical illness is not a guarantee of inner sinfulness nor physical health a guarantee of righteousness. If anything, God warns against judging people based on their appearance (Jn 7:24; 1 Sam 16:7). So, who are the modern lepers of our religion, our Catholic Church?
Recently, I had a very sad experience. A gay friend of mine - formerly a Benedictine monk – had cut off communication from me for over 15 years. After my horrible ordeal in Nigeria, many people reached out to me including this friend. I expressed my disappointment to him and wondered why it took a tragedy and near-death experience to hear from a friend towards whom I had shown good will and a non-judgmental attitude. His response hit me like a ton of bricks. “You do not understand”, he said, “all my life I have been made to feel less than a normal person, being gay and all. You don’t understand how crushing it is to know that I am truly different, that I am not normal, but abnormal. Every day I battle to stay sane.” He informed me that he rejected himself and had attempted suicide twice. Wow! How do you respond to that? Like the lepers of old, many of our gay and lesbian brothers and sister do not feel welcome in the Church. This is worrisome. How can we as a church make our brothers and sisters FEEL NORMAL AND WELCOME in the church? What would Jesus do? Please, reread today’s gospel.

Después de leer la primera lectura del sexto domingo, me sentí triste y deprimido. Las personas que padecían enfermedades de la piel "que parecen llagas de lepra" eran declaradas ritualmente impuras, pecadoras y condenadas al ostracismo de la comunidad. Se les hacía sentir inútiles y se les prohibía tocar a otros o ser tocados. Se les exigía que se humillaran aún más informando a todos los que se cruzaban con ellos de que eran leprosos e impuros. ¡Qué vida tan miserable! No puedo imaginarme lo terrible que debía ser su vida, por lo que las palabras y acciones de Jesús hacia el leprosoen el Evangelio son tan poderosas como radicales.
Se le acercó un leproso, que se arrodilló ante Jesús y le suplicó: "Si tu quieres, puedes limpiarme". Sintiendo compasión, Jesús extendió la mano y lo tocó diciendo: “Quiero, queda limpio.” Mc 1:40-45 Consciente de la deplorable condición del hombre, Jesús se compadeció de él. Rompió la regla que prohibía tocar a los leprosos. Demostró que debemos amar a las personas, sin importar quiénes sean o su condición en la vida. Debemos estar dispuestos a tender la mano a los oprimidos, a los marginados, a los vulnerables y a los invisibles de nuestro mundo. Él mostró que el amor trasciende las leyes, y que lo que Dios desea es misericordia, no sacrificio (Mt 9,3)."Extendió la mano, le tocó y le dijo: 'Yo quiero. Queda limpio'". Jesús también desmintió otra idea errónea de que las condiciones físicas son signos de pecaminosidad interior. Así, no dijo "tus pecados quedan perdonados", sino "queda limpio", queda curado. En otras palabras, una enfermedad física no es una garantía de pecaminosidad interior ni la salud física una garantía de rectitud. En todo caso, Dios advierte que no se debe juzgar a las personas por su apariencia (Jn 7:24; 1 Sam 16:7). Entonces, ¿quiénes son los leprosos modernos de nuestra
religión, nuestra Iglesia católica?
Hace poco, tuve una experiencia muy triste. Un amigo mío gay -antiguo monje benedictino- había cortado la comunicación conmigo durante más de 15 años. Después de mi horrible experiencia en Nigeria, muchas personas se pusieron en contacto conmigo, incluido este amigo. Le expresé mi decepción y le pregunté por qué era necesaria una tragedia y una experiencia cercana a la muerte para tener noticias de un amigo con quien había mostrado buena voluntad y una actitud sin prejuicios. Su respuesta me golpeó como una tonelada de ladrillos. "No entiendes", me dijo, "toda mi vida me han hecho sentir menos que una persona normal, siendo gay y todo eso. No comprendes lo que me daña saber que soy realmente diferente, que no soy normal, sino anormal. Cada día lucho por mantenerme cuerdo". Me informó de que se rechazaba a sí mismo y que había intentado suicidarse dos veces. ¡Increíble! ¿Cómo se responde a eso? Como los leprosos de antes, muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas gays y lesbianas no se sienten
bienvenidos en la Iglesia. Esto es preocupante. ¿Cómo podemos, como iglesia, hacer que nuestros hermanos y hermanas se sientan NORMALES Y BIENVENIDOS en la iglesia? ¿Qué haría Jesús? Por favor, vuelvan a leer el evangelio de hoy.

Every year on Valentines Day I think about my engaged encounter retreat that I did the weekend before Valentines day when I was engaged to my wife. I’m not going to lie, going into it I was hesitant because we had done so much prep and were involved in the church that I struggled in being enthusiastic to be there. Another thing that was difficult for me was that most of the guys did not want to be there and by the conversations they were having in the dorm they really didn’t have a spiritual relationship with God and were there because they were “forced” to be there. The weekend was challenging but in a good way. My wife and I grew closer to each other and enjoyed our time together. Something that has happened in our society is that marriage is not a sacrament to people anymore. Everyone is about having a cute venue, funny entrances, aesthetics, and all sorts of things that are not in the Church. God should be at the center of every relationship no matter what. You and your spouse should be striving to grow closer to God everyday and the closer you get to God, the closer you grow together. So as we celebrate Valentines day and everyone is focused on flowers and cards and candies, we should focus on where is God in our relationship with our significant other. So enjoy your time but remember that God comes first and should be the center of your relationship.

Todos los años, en la fecha de San Valentín, pienso en el retiro de encuentro de novios que hicimos el fin de semana anterior a San Valentín, cuando mi esposa y yo éramos novios. No voy a mentir, al ir a él estaba indeciso porque habíamos hecho tantos preparativos y estábamos involucrados en la iglesia que me costó estar entusiasmado por estar allí. Otra cosa que fue difícil para mí fue que la mayoría de los participantes no querían estar allí y por las conversaciones que tenían en el dormitorio realmente no tenían una relación espiritual con Dios y estaban allí porque estaban "obligados" a estar allí. El fin de semana fue un reto, pero en el buen sentido. Mi esposa y yo nos acercamos el uno al otro y disfrutamos de nuestro tiempo juntos. Algo que ha ocurrido en nuestra sociedad es que el matrimonio ya no es un sacramento para la gente. Todo se trata de tener un salón bonito, entradas extravagantes, estética y todo tipo de cosas que no están en la Iglesia. Dios debería estar en el centro de cada relación sin importar lo que sea. Tú y tu pareja deberían esforzarse por acercarse a Dios todos los días y cuanto más se acerquen a Dios, más se unirán. Así que mientras celebramos el día de San Valentín y todo el mundo se centra en las flores, las tarjetas y los dulces, deberíamos centrarnos en dónde está Dios en nuestra relación con nuestra pareja. Así que disfruten su tiempo pero recuerden que Dios es la prioridad y debe ser el centro de su relación.

Committee
Brothers and Sisters,
As many of you may know, last Friday churches have won a partial injunction against State COVID 19 restrictions.
This is potential GOOD NEWS, however, the Archdiocesan guidelines are as follows: Parishes in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties must continue following previously established protocols for outdoor in-person or Livestream ONLY worship. So as much as the Priests, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers and all of you want to move back into our beautiful church, we are asking you to be patient as we all strive to remain healthy and in compliance with the guidelines. We are grateful for your attendance and PATIENCE during these trying times and especially during the cold weather
The Re-Opening committee has a little good news: Since the weather has warmed up a bit, we will be moving the temporary altar, Ambo and musicians back outside for the weekday, Saturday morning, and the Sunday Masses. The two Saturday 5 and 7 PM Masses will continue to be live -streamed from inside the church but we will continue to set out the big screen TV or parishioners can remain in their cars and listen on 91.7 FM
All of the protocols, masks, social distancing, sanitizing hands, and chairs, entering and exiting the area will continue to be strictly observed for the good of all of us in attendance. And the ushers will assist you in processing to receive Holy Communion - We are strongly requesting all communicants to receive IN THE HAND!
We received some disappointing news regarding the installation of the new canopy: Due to COVID restrictions the fabricating company has been operating at 25% of labor capacity and will not be able to deliver until the last week in February.
We are a congregation of faith – we can weather these inconveniences with grateful and prayerful hearts and smile at each other with our eyes until better times are upon us.

Esta es una BUENA NOTICIA en potencia, sin embargo las directrices de la Arquidiócesis son las siguientes: Las parroquias en los condados de Santa Bárbara y Ventura deben continuar siguiendo los protocolos previamente establecidos para el culto al aire libre en persona o livestream UNICAMENTE.
Así que por mucho que los Sacerdotes, Lectores, Ministros de la Eucaristía, Ujieres y todos ustedes quieran regresar a nuestra hermosa iglesia, les pedimos que sean pacientes mientras todos nos esforzamos por permanecer saludables y en

Continued: Updates from the Opening Committee
As most of you know, Dr. Kevin White has served as Chairperson of the Re-Opening committee since the pandemic began. Through his leadership and the hard work of the committee members and staff personnel Dr. White has led us out of and back into and again out of the church as guidelines, health, and safety have allowed. It has been a demanding job complying with the various federal state and diocesan guidelines while trying to preserve our faith life as a community. He, like many of you, is excited by another opportunity to return inside the church building, and wishes that the efforts to keep us safe continue.
Unfortunately he is no longer going to serve on the committee and has resigned as chairperson. We are grateful for his leadership and sincerely wish to thank him for his efforts.

Most teenagers are eager to date, but parents may be less eager to reach that milestone. Preparing yourself — and your teenager — for smart, safe dating is key. As a family, set rules, and enforce them. Discuss who they can see, what activities are allowed or forbidden, how late they can stay out. Make sure your teenager is clearon how to handle himself or herself in tough situations, and that they have an “out” if they need one in you or another trusted adult. Honesty and specificity will make these conversations more impactful, and more likely to stick with your teen.
