XIII Sunday of Ordinary Time
The Gospel presents a very high contrast between the human incapacity in the face of illness and death, on the one hand, and on the other the impressive strength of faith. The hemorrhoid had been sick for twelve years, a disease of sterility, terrible for a woman in the time of Jesus. He had resorted to all human means, but all had proved a failure. Not only did it not improve, it had gotten worse. The woman, in her tragic situation, is desperate. The human incapacity is manifest. The only attitude towards such an inability is faith. What man, with all his means, can not do, can achieve the power of faith. With this conviction he approaches Jesus, touches him with his hand and with faith, and is healed. The same thing happens to Jairo. Your daughter is dead. There is no remedy: death has won. Being able to return to life does not belong to the human experience. But faith is stronger than death. And that's why Jesus will say to Jairo: "Do not fear, it's enough for you to have faith." And Jairus with faith gave his daughter a second life. Magnificent examples of the strength of faith! in both cases, he makes it clear that it is faith that moves him to manifest his power: healing the woman not be-cause he has touched her, but bebe-cause she has ap-proached him with faith and has been resurrected, causing her daughter to "rise up" Jairo (who, whatev-er happens, does not faltwhatev-er in his faith). On both occa-sions, the faith of those who approach him is what makes "strength come from him" that saves. As we approach Jesus with faith, as we approach the sacra-ments now, firmly believing that in them is the pres-ence and action of Jesus, he manifests his power to us, granting us the gifts of his divine grace that saves us. Let us remember, moreover, when examining with what faith we approach Jesus, since the apostolic text of this Sunday moves us so that our faith is trans-lated into works of charity. He exhorts us to know how to share the gifts we have -whether they are- with others. The example that is proposed to us is that of the generosity of Jesus. Put your eyes on Jesus we will learn to be in solidarity with others. Which means that we have to contemplate him, while our charity is attentive to discovering the concrete needs of others.

St. Brigid Immigration Services
