From the Pastor’s Desk
First, let me revel with you in the good news. It was announced on Saturday, April 2, that Father Earl Fernandes, a priest from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, will be our next Shepherd. Father Fernandes will be ordained a bishop and installed in the Diocese of Columbus on Tuesday, May 31. If my memory serves me correctly, I met Father Fernandes several years ago at a fundraiser dinner. His keen intellect and sincere friendliness were on display that evening. I know Bishop Elect Fernandes to be an incredibly gifted individual, and it seems as if he is the perfect fit for our diocese.
Next, I share with you the sad news. My mother, Bernadette, suddenly passed away early in the morning on Monday, April 4. My parents have lived in Tennessee for more than twenty years, but I was able to travel that day to be with my father. We prayed the rosary together in the evening and discussed funeral arrangements with my siblings. For my entire family, it has been a mix of emotions – sorrow for this loss, relief that she does not have to struggle with illness any longer, and gratitude for her life. I am extremely thankful for the parishioners of Christ the King and Saint Thomas. My family has been lifted up by your prayers and the support of these two parishes. Please continue to pray for Bernadette, that she may rest in peace.
Speaking of prayer, I would like to encourage everyone to make every possible effort to come to church this week. If you would still like to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent, you will have that opportunity on Monday evening. The entire Triduum will be celebrated at both parishes – the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday, the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord on Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Saturday. These liturgies allow us to experience the richness of our Catholic religion and unite ourselves mystically to the person of Christ who suffered lovingly for our salvation. Please consider accompanying your parish family in prayer during these final days of preparation for the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter.

En primer lugar, permítanme deleitarme con las buenas noticias. El sábado, 2 de abril se anunció que el Padre Earl Fernandes, un sacerdote de la Arquidiócesis de Cincinnati, será nuestro próximo Pastor. El Padre Fernandes será ordenado obispo e instalado en la Diócesis de Columbus el martes, 31 de mayo. Si mi memoria no me falla, conocí al Padre Fernandes hace varios años en una cena para recaudar fondos. Su inteligencia y su sincera amabilidad se notaron aquella noche. Sé que el obispo electo Fernandes es una persona increíblemente dotada, y parece que es la persona perfecta para nuestra diócesis.
A continuación, comparto con ustedes la triste noticia. Mi madre, Bernadette, falleció repentinamente en la madrugada del lunes 4 de abril. Mis padres viven en Tennessee desde hace más de veinte años, pero pude viajar ese día para estar con mi padre. Would you like to purchase flowers for Easter as a memorial to a loved one? Write the name of the one to be remembered on a piece of paper, put it with an offering of $10 in an envelope marked
“Easter Flowers,” and drop it in the collection basket. You can also mail the envelope to the parish office. All easter flower requests must be received by Monday, April 11. (This event is bilingual.)
Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence. That means that Catholics 14 years and older should abstain from meat. It also means that Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 should only eat one full meal. Their two other smaller meals that day should not equal a full meal.
The Living Stations of the Cross will take place at both parishes on Good Friday. Join us at Christ the King at 12:00 p.m. for a bilingual rendition of the Lord’s Passion or join us at Saint Thomas at 5:00 p.m. for a Spanish rendition of the Lord’s Passion.
Saint Thomas invites families to join us for our annual Easter egg hunt. All the kids are invited to participate after the 11:00 a.m.

The Church of the Resurrection in New Albany, Ohio, will host a retreat conducted by Fr. Mike Depcik on Saturday, April 23.
