Present continuous in English / Presente continuo en inglés
Uno de los usos del tiempo presente continuo que vas a estudiar en este tema es describir eventos que se están desarrollando en el momento en que estás hablando.
Ejemplo: I am playing chess. / Yo estoy jugando ajedrez.
El presente continuo o también conocido como progresivo tiene dos componentes: el verbo to be y un verbo en participio presente (terminación –ing).
Como puedes apreciar el verbo to be debe conjugarse de acuerdo con el sujeto.
Verbo Participio
presente Ortografía
eat eating A la mayoría de los verbos simplemente se les agrega la terminación -ing al final.
ride riding A los verbos que terminan en -e, se les quita esta -e y se agrega -ing.
agree agreeing A los verbos que terminan en -ee se les agrega -ing al final.
lie lying A los verbos que terminan en -ie, se les cambia esta terminación por -y y se agrega -ing.
sit sitting A los verbos de una sola sílaba que terminan en una vocal y una consonante, se les duplica la consonante y se agrega -ing.
Excepción: Los verbos terminados en -w, -x e -y.
answer answering A los verbos de dos sílabas y cuya primera sílaba es la que lleva el acento en la pronunciación, simplemente se les agrega -ing.
begin beginning A los verbos de dos sílabas y cuya segunda sílaba es la que lleva el acento en la pronunciación, se les duplica la última consonante y se agrega -ing.

Forma negativa en presente continuo
El presente continuo negativo lleva la partícula not después del verbo to be. La estructura de las oraciones negativas en presente continuo es como se muestra en la tabla siguiente.
