History of the University of Sulaimani

In 1968, the first university in Iraqi Kurdistan was founded in Sulaimani.

Now University is the largest and oldest university in Iraqi Kurdistn Region

From that day onward, University of Sulaimani has

become one of the bright candles of science and Kurdish consciousness that prepared many generations in

Kurdistan.

History of the University of Sulaimani

The Ba'ath regime was not expecting that from this university, thus, in an unexpected step in 1981, the University was

transferred to Erbil and it’s name was changed to University of Salahaddin in order to eliminate the revolutionary spirit of this center of science and Kurdish consciousness.

This situation lasted for twelve years till the uprising of 1991 which led to the reopening of the University in Sulaimani.

With the effort of the Kurdish political leadership and positive response of the science loving people of Sulaimani, in 1992 this University was once again re-established.

first started with opening of only three colleges which were: College of Languages, Agriculture, and Medicine.

Under very hard condition and double embargo.

Fortunately, today the University of Sulaimani developed so remarkably that we cannot shed light on all its work, activities, and institutions, leave aside, within the womb of this university Universities of Halabja, Raparen and Garmiyan were born.

The University of Sulaimani is in the process of Higher Education Reform.

The University of Sulaimani was the leader in applying and stepping forward in the Higher Education Reform, including: Quality assurance, Continuous Academic Development and Study Programs Developing.

The University of Sulaimani was also ahead of other Kurdistan universities in stepping towards promoting principles of health and safety awareness, therefore, the University has founded a new directorate for it.

The University keeps on preparing qualified and trained staff for both public and private sector and it continues to enlighten this region, simultaneously, it remains the leader in the

process of diverting the community through preparing

graduates who are provided with science, knowledge and training.

Among the principles of working in this university is to observe human rights, women’s rights, children rights, tolerance and democracy.

The council of the University of Sulaimani is the highest authority of the University which is responsible for the overall planning and organization of the administrative and academic procedures of the University.

This council comprises all the deans of faculties and colleges, assistants to the president of the University, representative of the teaching staff and one

representative of the students, and is directly headed by the president of the University. The council holds weekly meetings to discuss all different University affairs.

The important Step

REFORM

HCDP is an ambitious program that aims to develop human capacities in Kurdistan Region in the field of higher education.

KRG allocated (100,000,000 US $) for (HCDP) program every year.

So far three rounds had been announced.

(HCDP) program encourage our potential candidates to chose the top and highest quality universities around the world.

This university and other universities in Kurdistan suffered from a great

Number of potential candidates for HCDP program till now are 4700.

2500 had already joined their studies, 700 of them have already completed their studies and returned back home and joined their carriers.

The University of Sulaimani has a considerable share in the Human Capacity Development Program (HCDP). So far 845 students were admitted to PhD and MSc progarams abroad (562 students are studying MSc and 283 students are studying PhD).

Number of postgraduate students graduated from Schools of the University between 1998 and 2013 were 1751 students from which:

118 One Year Diploma, 89 Two Year Diploma, 1097 Master (MA &

MSc), 447 PhD (Doctorate)

Number of the current higher education students is 397 for the academic year 2013- 2014 as:

7 Two Year Diploma, 246 Master (MA, MSc), 144 PhD (Doctorate)

Number of the university dormitories for boys: 21 students’ dormitories buildings

Number of the university dormitories for girls: 22 students’ dormitories buildings.

Total number of the University administrative staff and employees for the academic year 2013- 2014 were 3209.

It is regarded as the greatest strategic and historical step toward expansion and advancing University of Sulaimani.

It is considered as the solution for the problems of lacking space, small lecture halls, lack of required laboratories and other requirements which this

university had suffered from for years.

It’s also regarded as rebuilding of University of Sulaimani in a more modern way with a new design similar to many modern international Universities.

It is the first project of building a brand new large university campus in the entire Iraq.

The campus cost 305,305,496,00 USD, built on 1,928,762 square meters i.e 771 Hectors.

The project includes a Presidency block, Faculties and

Schools buildings which contains lecture halls, administration offices and laboratories.

The campus also contains the following buildings:

Main Cafeteria, Faculty And College Cafeterias, Central Library, Research Center, dormitories blocks, IT Center,

Central Registrar Office, Commercial Center, student leisure central, Fire Extinguishing Center, Police Station, Hospital, Power Supply Center, Mosque , Museum, Conference Halls, Guest House and petrol station.

The New University Campus can take up to 20.000-23.000 students and has two main parking lots for teaching,

administration staff and students which can take more than 3000 cars can park within these car parks.

Overall the University with all of its facilities can create a small town with all required services

Halabja University

On March 16th, 1988, after the uprising and freedom of Halabja from Ba’ath regime, Iraqi planes dropped gas canisters and chemical weapons. At least 5,000 innocent people died as an immediate result of the

chemical attack.

University of Halabja, one of the newest universities in Iraqi Kurdistan, which its decision of establishment was made in 2010 but its presidency assumed in

February 16th 2011. The University of Halabja is still in the beginning stage. It comprises one faculty and a college. Faculty of Education and Human Sciences consists of three schools and six scientific departments (Department of English Language, Department of Social Sciences, Department of Arabic Language, Department of Basic Physical Education, Department Principles of Religion and Department of Kurdish Language which enrolls students for the academic year 2014-2015).The college is College of Physical Education which includes

Department of Physical Education. Consent granted to establish Department of Law in Saidsadq and Department of Physics which enrolls students for the

academic year 2014-2015..

The University of Halabja is continuously attempting to provide academic staff and other necessary needs for educational

purposes like building new buildings for newly established

colleges, new dormitories, and providing necessary equipment for scientific laboratory. The goal of the University is to prepare skilled scholars in all science fields for Shahrazoor area in particular and Kurdistan Region in general. The message of the University for the Honored People of the area is to protect and develop the university in every aspect and encourage those who have PhD and MA degrees in other cities of Kurdistan and Iraq to return to University of Halabja
