3BLESSING OF HOMES
The Feast of the Epiphany + Jan. 3, 2021 The custom of blessing homes began in the Middle Ages. There is an annual blessing of the home by the Head of the House gathered with the whole family.
A parent with blessed chalk, marks the inside or outside of the main door (or on the doorframe) with the initials of the Magi (Three Kings) with a cross between each. The initials of their names in Latin are used: Cas-par, Melchoir, Balthasar.
Before the first initial write the first two digits of the year, followed by a cross and then the initials C+M+B and another cross followed by the last two digits of the year. Thus for this upcoming Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 3rd, mark: 20+C+M+B+21.
It is also true that the letters C+M+B stand for the Latin: “Christus mansionem benedicat” or “May Christ bless this house”. At any time between now and the Epiphany please bring a piece of chalk to any of our parish priests or deacons, we will be happy to bless it for you to use in blessing your own homes.
WHO WERE THEY REALLY?
Traditionally the view developed that they were Babylonians, Persians or Jews from Yemen as the kings of Yemen then were Jews, a view held for exam-ple by St. John Chrysostom. In the Scriptures they are “wise men” from the East and there is no reference to the exact number….and all are thought to be scholars from their regions (“Magi” indicates wise or learned or scholars). Their identification as kings may come from later Christian writings and probably is linked to Psalm 72:11 “May all kings fall down before him”.
The Italian artist Giotto in 1305 painted them as un-derstood throughout northern Europe at that time: Cas-par (GasCas-par), an old man with white beard who gives gold; he is the “King of Tarsus” (coast of modern Tur-key) and the first to kneel to Christ. Melchior is middle -aged, giving frankincense from his native Arabia; and Balthazar is a young man, black skinned, with myrrh from Saba (modern south Yemen) – today some schol-ars suggest Balthazar may have been from Ethiopia. Another tradition however, suggests that Gaspar was from India who journeyed across Persia & Arabia; Melchoir was Persian and Balthasar from Arabia. Gold indicates that Jesus was fully human, a king - as in the gold of a king’s crown. Frankincense is a pure white form of incense and indicates that he was pure, holy, divine --- thus truly God. Myrrh is a red form of incense made from a tree with very thin branches full of thorns; it indicates that Jesus would suffer and die (red for shedding his blood) and this tree might have been the source for the crown of thorns.

Magi from the East arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.”
Matthew 2:1-2
When I tell a story, I have a friend who prefers the “nutshell version” first. After that she’ll listen to me ramble, but she wants to know the main point right off the bat. When reading and hearing Sunday scriptures one may often find the nutshell by looking at the re-sponsorial psalm or the Gospel acclamation. From Psalm 72 we hear “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.” The verse for the Gospel acclamation is Matthew 2:2 “We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” As a weary world, we need to see the light, to follow with our actions and our words. This is the same hope that is echoed in Isaiah 60:2 “See, darkness covers the earth, / and thick clouds cover the peoples; / but upon you the L shines, / and over you appears his glory.” Don’t give up, friends. You must shine!
SEARCHING
In Matthew’s Gospel today we see two extremely different perspectives, two different reasons for search-ing for Jesus. In some ways, this resembles the polari-zation of our nation in today’s time. What one group sees as good for the nation, those with opposing views think will wreck the country. The Magi were astrolo-gers who saw a vision in the sky and were trying to find a way to follow it and discover the new king of the Jews. Herod heard about this king, and his reaction was dark and negative. He saw the birth of such a king as a threat to his power as the Roman leader of the country and wanted the Magi to pass on to him what they knew about this Christ child. Similarly, on a more personal level, we can either feel threatened or excited by changes that may come, depending on our perspective. GIVING HOMAGE
In our minds, it is easy to mix up bits and pieces from Luke’s account of the shepherds coming to see Jesus in the stable and the story of the magi. Clearly, it has taken the magi time to get here, and the reading speaks of them coming to the house where the star led them. Nevertheless, they “prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures . . .”
How do we do this? Do we continue looking for Je-sus, even if takes a while and he is not where we expect to see him? Are we paying attention to the signs show-ing us the way? What gifts do we have with which to pay him homage? After seeing him, the Magi were warned in a dream not to go back the way they came. But if we have seen the Christ child, how can we go back to where we were? We must continue to respond to God’s call to move forward and grow in our lives. We must seek the right and just path and turn away from the “Herods” and inherent evils in our life.
Nutshell: Seek God. Pay homage. Amen.

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD - LA EPIFANÍA DEL SEÑOR
BUSCANDO
Rinde homenaje. Amén.

PROMISE FULFILLED
Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God’s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God’s fidelity to them, all people shall become God’s children and rejoice in the fulfill-ment of God’s promise to Israel.
