La Revista Científica Odontológica es el órgano oficial de difusión científica de la carrera de Estomatología de la Univer-sidad Científica del Sur. Es una publica-ción arbitrada por pares, de periodicidad semestral (enero-junio, julio-diciembre), de ámbito y difusión mundial.
Su objetivo es publicar artículos origi-nales referidos a temas del ámbito de la salud estomatológica en sus diferentes especialidades, así como de importancia para la salud pública, resaltando aquellos cuyo fin sea mejorar la salud del país y de la región. Está dirigida a profesionales de la salud y público en general intere-sado en temas de salud estomatológica. Propicia el intercambio de la experiencia científica en salud entre instituciones y personas dedicadas a la investigación dentro y fuera del Perú, con el fin de promover el avance y la aplicación de la investigación en salud. Su distribución, en sus versiones impresa y electrónica, es gratuita a texto completo.
Las publicaciones de la Revista Cientí-fica Odontológica se distribuyen en las siguientes secciones: artículo original, artículo de revisión (sistemática y narra-tiva), reportes de caso, protocolo de investigación, artículo especial y cartas al editor. Se recomienda seguir las recomendaciones para publicación de investigaciones agrupadas por Equator Network (http://www.equator-network. org).
The Revista Científica Odontológica is the official journal for scientific diffu-sion of the oral medicine department of Universidad Científica del Sur. It is a peer reviewed semi-annual publication (January-June, July-December), distrib-uted globally.
Its aim is to publish original articles related to issues within the field of oral medicine across its different specialties, as well as material of importance to public health, particularly those aspects targeted at improving the health of the nation and the region in general. The publication is aimed at health professionals and the general public interested in oral medicine related issues.
The journal promotes the exchange of scientific experiences in health among institutions and individuals engaged in research within and beyond Peru, with the aim of encouraging advances in health research and the application of such advances. The distribution of its unabridged texts, in both printed and online form, is free of charge.
The articles published in Revista Cientí-fica Odontológica are divided into the following sections: original article, review article (systematic and narrative), case reports, research protocol, special article and letters to the editor. Contributors are advised to follow the research publica-tion recommendapublica-tions contained in the

Toda propuesta de publicación (artículo enviado a la revista con el fin de publi-carse) debe incluir: a) la carta de trans -ferencia de derechos y la carta de origi-nalidad de artículo firmados por todos los autores, dando conformidad a que su propuesta sea sometida al proceso editorial de la revista, y b) la propuesta de publicación, que debe seguir los requisitos formales y la estructura indi-cada en este reglamento.
NORMAS DE REDACCIÓN
Toda propuesta de publicación debe cumplir los siguientes requisitos:
1. Requisitos formales
1.1. El idioma usado para la redacción puede ser español o inglés. 1.2. Debe tratar temas de odontología
y estomatología.
1.3. Debe ser inédita (original). Podría haber excepciones, únicamente por invitación exclusiva del comité editorial.
1.4. Debe ser enviada solo a una revista por vez. El autor se compro-mete a no enviar la propuesta de publicación a otra revista hasta que concluya el proceso editorial en la primera.
1.5. La propuesta debe estar escrita en formato legible mediante el programa Microsoft word (para windows 97 en adelante; exten -siones .doc y .docx), en tipografía times new roman, tamaño 12, a espacio simple, márgenes normales, con numeración de página ubicada en el ángulo superior derecho.
1.6. En caso hubiera tablas, deben enviarse en formato legible para Microsoft excel (para windows 97 en adelante; extensiones .xls y

DRAFTING GUIDELINES
All articles submitted for publication must
meet the following requirements:
1. Formal requirements
1.1. The language used must be Spanish or English.
1.2. The subjects addressed must be related to dentistry and oral medi-cine.
1.3. Articles must be original (unpub-lished). Exceptions may be made, solely at the invitation of the edito-rial committee.
1.4. Articles must only be submitted to one journal at a time. Authors undertake not to send the proposed article to another journal until the editorial process of the first journal has been concluded. 1.5. Articles must be submitted in a
legible format using the program

font, size 12 single space, normal margins, with the page numbers located in the upper right corner.

1.8. Debe seguir la estructura y pautas de una de las secciones publi-cadas por la revista.
2. Aspectos generales
2.1. Todo artículo, en su primera página, debe contener la siguiente información:
2.1.1. nombre y apellidos de todos los autores. Salvo que el autor sugiera una forma en particular, se usará el primer nombre y el primer apellido.
2.1.2. Filiación institucional del autor, además de la ciudad y el país.
2.1.3. Profesión y mayor grado académico alcanzado.
2.1.4. número orcid del investi -gador.
2.1.5. Contribución de autoría. Se debe incluir información respecto de la contribución individual de los autores durante la realización de la investigación y la redacción de la propuesta de publica-ción.

1.7. Any graphs sent must be in the

2.1. All articles must contain the following information on their first

the authors. Unless authors suggest a particular form, the first name and first surname of each author will be used.
2.1.2. Authors’ institutional affilia-tion, as well as the city and country.
2.1.3. Profession and highest academic qualification achieved.
2.1.4. Researchers’ ORCID numbers.
2.1.5. authorial contribution: infor -mation must be included concerning the individual contribution of the authors during the carrying out of the research and drafting of the article submitted for publication.

2.1.9. En caso la propuesta de publicación derive de una tesis o haya sido presen-tada en un evento científico, se debe incluir detallada-mente el título de la tesis y el grado obtenido, o el lugar y fecha de realización del evento.
2.2. El contenido de la propuesta de investigación debe estar estructu-rado de acuerdo con el siguiente orden:
2.2.1. Título conciso e informativo de máximo 50 caracteres, incluidos los espacios.
2.2.2. Resumen en español e inglés de la propuesta de publicación, que no debe contener más de 250 pala-bras.
2.2.3. Palabras clave en español e inglés de acuerdo a DeCS, MeSH, Index Medicus y Dental; además, se debe detallar cuál fue usado. El máximo número de pala-bras claves es cuatro.

2.2. The content of the article submitted for publication must be structured in accordance with the

2.2.1. Concise and informative title with a maximum of 50 characters, including spaces.
2.2.2. Abstract in Spanish and English summarizing the article submitted for publi-cation, containing no more than 250 words.
2.2.3. Key words in spanish and
English in accordance with DeCS, MeSH, Medicus and Dental Index, mentio-ning which was used. The maximum number of key words is four.
2.2.4. Cuerpo del artículo, cuya extensión depende de la sección (ver tabla 1).
2.2.5. Agradecimientos. Especi-ficarlos en forma sucinta, detallando la contribución en el desarrollo de la inves-tigación. no es obligatorio. 2.2.6. Financiamiento. Describir
qué institución financió la investigación o si fue auto-financiada.
2.2.7. Conflicto de interés. Colocar cuál es, en caso lo hubiera. 2.2.8. Referencias bibliográficas usadas en el texto. Enume-radas consecutivamente en orden de aparición en el texto, señalados con números arábigos en supe-ríndice, colocados después de la puntuación. Los títulos de revista deben ser abreviados de acuerdo al estilo utilizado en el Index Medicus. Referir a todos los autores cuando sean seis o menos; en el caso de haber siete o más, colocar “y col.” a partir del sétimo. Las normas usadas por la revista son las de Vancouver. Los numerales 2.2.2 y 2.2.3 son válidos para las secciones: artículo original, artí -culo de revisión, Reporte de caso, Proto-colo de investigación, Artículo especial y Cartas al editor.
El resumen será estructurado (dividido en objetivo, materiales y métodos, resul-tados y conclusiones) en el caso de los artículos originales y no estructurado para las demás secciones.
3. Aspectos específicos de cada sección

consecutively in the order they appear in the text, expressed with Arabic numerals in superscript, following the punctuation.
journal titles must be abbre -viated in accordance with the style used in the Index Medicus. All authors must be mentioned when they are six or fewer; in cases of seven or more authors, use the term “et al” following the seventh author. The guide-lines used by the journal are taken from the Vancouver style.
Paragraph headings 2.2.2 and 2.2.3 are
valid for the following sections: orig -inal article, review article, case report, research protocol, special article and letters to the editor.
The abstract should be structured (divided into objective, materials and methods, results and conclusions) in the case of original articles and unstructured for other sections.
3. Specific aspects of each section 3.1. Original article: An article
of which is to present the results of scientific research. The main body of the article should be divided as
follows:
3.1.1. Introduction: this text
should address the back-ground to the problem, its impact on public health, the knowledge gap the research is seeking to reduce, justifi-cation for the study and its objectives.
3.1.2. Materials and methods:
This section should contain the characteristics of the population studies, how individuals were selected (sampling, inclusion and exclusion criteria), defining of variables, instruments used, analysis plan and ethical aspects. Depending on the study, some of these aspects may be omitted. 3.1.3. Results: clear presentation
of the findings of the study. 3.1.4. Discussion: interpreta
-tion and comparison of the results with those of other similar studies. The stren-gths and weaknesses (limi-tations) of the study should also be included, together with suggestions for future studies.
3.1.5. Conclusions.
3.2. Review articles: These may
consist of two modalities: narra -tive review articles and systematic reviews.
3.2.1. Narrative reviews: Concise presentation of the most recent literature covering the subject being reviewed, by a professional expert in the field. The main body of the text should be divided into 3.1. Artículo original. Propuesta

3.1.3. Resultados. Presentación clara de los hallazgos del estudio.
3.1.4. Discusión. Interpretación de los resultados y compa-ración de los mismos con otros estudios similares. Se debe incluir, además, las fortalezas y debilidades (limitaciones) del estudio y sugerencias para futuros estudios.
3.1.5. Conclusiones.
3.2. Artículos de revisión. Pueden ser de dos modalidades: los artí -culos de revisión narrativa y las revisiones sistemáticas.

3.4. Protocolo de investigación. Se presenta la descripción de un proyecto de investigación. La inves-tigación aún no debe estar reali-zada. tendrá el siguiente orden:
3.4.1. Introducción. Debe contener los antecedentes del problema y la raciona-lidad de realizar el estudio, los objetivos, diseño del estudio.
3.4.2. Métodos. Puede incluirse, pero no está limitado a ámbito del estudio (diseño, etc.), criterios de elegibi-lidad, intervenciones, resul-tados esperados, crono-grama de acción, forma de selección de los partici-pantes (muestreo, recluta-miento), métodos de reco-lección de datos, manejo de los datos, plan de análisis estadístico, monitoreo de los datos, reporte y acción ante posibles daños.
3.4.3. Aspectos éticos. Debe incluirse, pero no se limita

Ethical aspects: This
section should include, while not being limited
of the study by an ethical committee, possible amend-ments made to the protocol, how consent or assent will be obtained, confidentia-lity, declaration of conflicts of interest, access to data, additional or subsequent attention to the study, disse-mination policy.
3.4.4. Appendices: all the mate -rial which the author consi-ders necessary for an understanding of the study. 3.5. Special article: Including opinion
pieces, interviews with experts and clinical-academic contribu-tions. Articles are published which reflect opinions and advances associated with clinical and academic themes and which stim-ulate scientific debate, contrib-uting to knowledge within the field. The content need not possess a defined structure.
3.6. Letters to the editor: In this section, readers comment upon articles published previously by
the journal. where applicable, a
response from the author alluded to may be included. This section may also include preliminary a: información respecto a la

4. Ética en investigación

The evaluation of an ethical committee is not necessary when the study is derived from the evaluation of secondary public databases (national surveys, etc.), emergency health research (outbreaks, epidemics, etc.), etc. The Editorial Committee will make its decision on a case-by-case basis.
5. Ethics in publishing
The Revista Científica Odontológica adheres to the recommendations of the

In accordance with the recommendations

concerning the methods employed, without ambiguities, in order to ensure that the findings can be confirmed by others (in the case of research studies).

and must not have been published previously in another medium.
• Must indicate that the authors assume

La deci-sión puede incluir la retracción del artí-culo. Adicionalmente, el Comité Editorial se reserva el derecho de comunicar el hecho a las autoridades respectivas y editores de otras revistas.
6. Criterios de autoría
La autoría implica la responsabilidad de los resultados de la investigación. Por lo tanto, debería conferirse el crédito de autor a aquellas personas que han contribuido de manera material o intelec-tual al momento del desarrollo del artí-culo. La Revista Científica Odontológica se acoge a las recomendaciones del icMje y adopta sus criterios de autoría:
6.1. Que la persona haya realizado una contribución sustancial a la concepción o diseño del estudio o a la adquisición, análisis o inter-pretación de los datos.
6.2. Que la persona haya participado en el diseño de la investigación o en la revisión crítica del conte-nido.
6.3. Que la persona haya aprobado la versión final del artículo que será

6. Authorship
Credited authorship implies responsibility for the results of the research. Therefore, credit for authorship should be conferred upon those persons who have contrib-uted materially or intellectually to the writing of the article. The Revista Cientí-fica Odontológica follows the
recom-mendations of the icMje and adopts the following authorship criteria:
6.1. That the individual has made a substantial contribution to the conception or design of the study or in the acquiring, analysis or interpretation of data.

Toda persona que cumpla con los cuatro criterios debería ser considerada como autor. Además, se debería considerar en los agradecimientos a toda persona que no cumpliese con los cuatro criterios, pero sí hubiese realizado alguna contri-bución a la investigación.
El número de autores de acuerdo con el tipo de artículo no está expresamente delimitado; sin embargo, los editores de la revista pueden solicitar al autor corres-ponsal un detalle de la participación de cada uno de los autores en el estudio, cuando consideren que la cantidad es excesiva.
7. De la revisión por pares
Toda propuesta de publicación que sea sometida a revisión por pares goza de confidencialidad durante este proceso. El revisor tiene prohibido difundir, comentar o utilizar la información que se encuentre en escrutinio.
El revisor no debería limitarse a la evaluación del manuscrito sino analizar el grado de autenticidad y originalidad de lo escrito. Si se identificara vicios en el texto, el revisor debería presentarlos en el informe de revisión; omitir esta infor-mación es una falta grave.
Todo revisor tiene la responsabilidad de declarar algún conflicto de interés. El Comité Editorial evaluará el caso, pudiendo eximir al revisor de la evalua-ción del artículo.
6.3. That the individual has approved the final version of the article to be published.
6.4. That the individual is able to assume responsibility for the find-ings contained in the article, guar-anteeing that adequate research was conducted.
All persons who meet these four criteria should be considered as an author. Also, acknowledgement should be given to all persons who do not comply with the four criteria, but who made some contribution to the research.
The number of authors in accordance with the type of article is not expressly delimited; however, the editors of the journal may request from the corre-sponding author details of the participa-tion of each one of the study’s authors, when the number of authors cited is considered excessive.
7. Concerning peer reviewers
All articles submitted for publication that are subjected to a peer review process will be treated with absolute confiden-tiality during that process. Reviewers are prohibited from disseminating, commenting upon or utilizing the infor-mation under scrutiny.
Reviewers should not limit themselves to the evaluation of the manuscript, but rather analyze the degree of authen-ticity and originality of the content. In the event that errors are identified in the text, reviewers must include them in their
review report: any failure to do so will
reflect unfavorably upon the reputation of the reviewer.
PROCESO EDITORIAL
Toda propuesta de publicación enviada a la Revista Científica Odontológica es recibida y evaluada por los editores (principal o asociado), quienes podrán aceptar, rechazar o enviar observaciones previas. La aceptación implica que la propuesta cumple con tocar temas que son de interés de la revista, con los crite-rios de originalidad y las normas para los autores de la revista, así como el consen-timiento para que la propuesta pase a la fase de revisión por pares. Se envían observaciones previas cuando el artículo no cumple con los aspectos formales solicitados y se requieren cambios antes de evaluar la propuesta. Esta se rechaza cuando no es de interés temático de la revista, carece de originalidad o si el incumplimiento de las normas para los autores de la revista es excesivo. Toda decisión tiene fundamentos objetivos y respeta la pluralidad de opiniones.
Luego de considerar que el artículo es pertinente, el editor enviará a evaluar el manuscrito a un par con experticia en el tema (comprobada por su publicaciones o grados académicos alcanzados). Esta evaluación por pares es anónima (doble ciego), en línea, ad honorem. La cantidad de revisores depende del tipo de artículo (tabla 1).
Luego de la evaluación, el revisor puede responder que el artículo es publicable sin modificaciones, publicable con modificaciones (mayores [cuestionan la metodología, etc.] o menores [temas de redacción, etc.]) o no publicable. El considerar un artículo como no publi-cable significa que el revisor considera que se han incurrido en errores que son insalvables. Toda respuesta es objetiva-mente fundamentada; el editor puede considerar la evaluación de la propuesta de investigación por un nuevo revisor cuando considere que la respuesta no es satisfactoria. EDITORIAL PROCESS
All articles submitted to Revista Cientí-fica Odontológica for publication will be evaluated by the editors (chief or asso-ciate), who will decide if the article can be accepted or rejected, or will send observations requesting modifications in the text. Acceptance will imply that the article submitted complies with the requirement of addressing a subject of interest to the journal, as well as with the originality criteria and guidelines for the journal’s authors, and that consent has been given for the article to be subjected to the peer review phase. Observations are sent when the article submitted does not comply with the formal aspects solic-ited and changes are required before the article can be evaluated. Articles will be rejected when they do not match the thematic interests of the journal, lack originality or fail to comply with the jour-nal’s multiple guidelines for authors. All decisions are based upon fundamental objectives while respecting plurality of opinion.
After concluding that an article is suitable for publication, the editor will order a peer review of the manuscript by an expert in the field (as established by their publica-tions or academic qualificapublica-tions). This peer review is anonymous (double blind), online, and ad honorem. The number of reviewers will depend on the type of article (Table 1).

Si fuera necesario responder las obser-vaciones de los revisores, el autor debe enviar el artículo corregido y una carta en la que se detallen los cambios reali-zados y se responda cada observación. El Comité Editorial es la instancia final que aprueba la publicación del artí-culo. Si esto ocurriera se procederá a la edición, diagramación y generación de prueba de imprenta. El autor reci-birá la prueba de imprenta para revisar y corregir algún error tipográfico, durante un tiempo prudencial dado por el editor. De no hacerlo se considerará que la versión final enviada ha sido aprobada.

In the event that the author is asked to address observations made by reviewers, the author must submit the corrected article, together with a letter addressing each of the observations. The editor will decide if the corrected article is suitable for publication, or if it should be reevalu-ated.
The Editorial Committee is the final instance for approving the publication of an article. Following such approval, the article will be subjected to the editing, layout and proofing stages. The author will receive the proofs and, within a period indicated by the editor, will be permitted to revise and correct the text. Any author who fails to respond to this communication will be deemed to have implicitly accepted the final version sent by the editor.
