I strongly urge … Catholics, and all men and women of

good will, not to yield to a utilitarian mentality which

always leads to the sacrifice of the weakest and most

defenseless. I invite you to a common effort so that

so-ciety can be renewed from the ground up, in order to

attain a life of dignity, justice and peace for everyone.

For Catholics, this contribution to the common good is

also a requirement of that essential dimension of the

Gospel which is human promotion and a supreme

ex-pression of charity. For this reason, the Church exhorts

all her faithful to be good citizens, conscious of their

responsibility to be concerned for the good of all, both

in their personal lives and throughout society.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The month of May has not only good weather, but an interesting pedigree. It is named after the Roman goddess Maia, said to be the mother of Hermes, or Mercury. The Romans saw it as “love’s month,” while in England, more practical farmers called it “Three Milks,” since the cows grazing on springtime’s bounty could produce at a phenomenal rate. Old customs die hard, and Christians have never made peace with Maytime frol-ics. No wonder that popular tradition dedicated the month’s prayers and devotions to Mary, although we cannot lose sight of the fact that the liturgy always has Easter at the center of cele-bration. Recent developments have enriched Mary’s place in a cycle of feast days woven through the whole year, dedicated Saturday as a weekly day for devotion, and highlighted Mary’s role in the Advent story. In fact, every day of the year Evening Prayer centers on the singing of Mary’s Canticle of Praise. The fifty days of Easter culminate on Pentecost with Mary, present of course for Christ’s birth, waiting in the upper room for the birth of the church.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK Fifth Sunday of Easter

Almighty ever-living God,

constantly accomplish the Paschal Mystery within us,

that those you were pleased to make new in Holy Baptism may, under your protective care, bear much fruit

and come to the joys of life eternal. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Reflection question:

What does it mean for me to bear fruit for the reign of God? Collect text from the English translation of The Roman Missal, © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

For Frederic, Vincentians transcended racial and

national prejudices. They judged women and

men strictly on their need, not on their color, nationality,

education, morality. Vincentians are non-judgmental. A

non-judgmental attitude excludes assigning guilt or

inno-cence, or judging a person’s degree of responsibility for

their needs or problems. St. Vincent appealed: “

Deal with

neighbors in a gentle, humble and loving manner, even

with the most hardened of sinners, and never employ a

vehement accusation or reproaches or harsh language

toward anyone whomsoever.”

St. William Recovery Group

St. William is offering a recovery group which will

meet each Saturday at Angel House beginning at

6:30 pm.

The purpose of this group is to assist those who have

a dependency on alcohol or drugs. We will use the

12 step approach.

House immediately following

In today’s second reading, St. John talks about our hearts condemning us (1 John 3:20). When he says that God is greater than our hearts he means that even when we know we have sinned, God is still a forgiving God who doesn’t wait for us to be “worthy.” So when we confess our sins, we need not doubt that we are forgiven.

But sometimes we feel shame when we have un-intentionally done something wrong, such as when we accidentally hurt someone. That is when it is good to remember that God knows what happened and still loves us. The best way to remember this is by living as God commands, loving God and our neighbor. If we believe in Jesus, we know that God forgives us even before we ask. If we love our neighbor, then we reach out to the person we hurt instead of hiding in shame, and try to make amends.

When we stop living in shame and start living in love, we can ask for whatever we need and receive it. For when God lives in us and we live in God, we won’t ask for anything trivial or selfish. The Spirit teaches us how to pray with confidence and faith. Our love and trust in God will help us to accept whatever God sends our way.
