Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
This season of Advent has rapidly come to a close. This year, Advent was the shortest that it could possibly be. This year, while there were four Sundays of Advent, there were not four weeks of Advent. During these brief days of Advent, we have placed our focus on Christ’s return - his coming again in glory - although we know neither the day nor the hour. In these last few days of this short season, (December 17th - December 24th), our preparation has been more intimate as we place our focus more directly on the events leading up to the birth of Jesus.
Tomorrow is Christmas. Our Christmas celebrations will begin tonight, (Sunday, Christmas Eve) with 5:00p.m. Mass. Mass will then be celebrated at Midnight. The midnight Mass will be Bilingual. There will, in addition, be organ music and carols beginning at 11:30p.m. The choir will, of course, be singing at the midnight celebration. On Christmas day, Sunday, only two masses will be celebrated. Mass will be celebrated in English at 11:00a.m. with the choir and, similarly, on Christmas morning, the choir will begin singing carols around 10:40a.m. Mass will be celebrated in Spanish at 12:30p.m. with the Walkirios.
As an Ascension Community, we have much for which to be grateful. Once again, in keeping with our vein of “We Can Do it Together as an Ascension Community”, the Finance Committee asked me to invite parishioners to consider making two Christmas gifts to Ascension Church. The first would be a monetary gift of $250 - $500, if you are able to provide one, but any extra donation is greatly appreciated. The second gift is signing up for the automated gift-giving system known as Faith Direct (see Faith Direct’s website - Ascension Church’s Code is “NY588”). We have added many parishioners to Faith Direct over the past three years but, in order to be a financially self-sustaining Parish, we need more support for Faith Direct. While we know much is being asked, we hope all would see the sacrifice as having great value for us as a Community.
On behalf of Fr. Rafferty, Fr. Daniel and Msgr. Shelley, we would like to wish you all God’s choicest blessings for the Christmas Season.

ASTORQueridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,
Esta temporada de Adviento ha llegado rápidamente a su fin. Este año el Adviento ha sido lo más corto que posiblemente ha podido ser. Este año, a pesar de que hubo cuatro domingos de Adviento, no hubo cuatro semanas de Adviento. Durante estos breves días de Adviento nos hemos enfocado en la venida de Cristo – su venida de nuevo en gloria – aunque no sabemos ni el día ni la hora. En estos pocos últimos días de esta corta
temporada (17– 24 de diciembre), nuestra preparación se vuelve más íntima a medida que nos enfocamos más directamente en los eventos que nos acercan al nacimiento de Jesús.
Mañana es Navidad. Nuestras celebraciones de Navidad comienzan esta noche (domingo…Nochebuena) con una misa a las 5 de la tarde. Después se celebrará la misa de medianoche (misa de gallo). La misa de medianoche será bilingüe. Habrá, además, música de órgano y villancicos comenzando a las 11:30 de la noche. El coro, naturalmente, cantará en la celebración de la medianoche. El día de Navidad, lunes, se celebrarán solo dos misas. Se celebrará misa en inglés a las 11 de la mañana con el coro y de igual manera, el coro comenzará cantando villancicos alrededor de las 10:40 de la mañana. Se celebrará misa en español a las 12:30 de la tarde con Los Walkirios.
Nosotros, como una comunidad de creyentes, tenemos mucho por qué estar agradecidos en este año. De acuerdo con nuestro tono de “Juntos Podemos Hacerlo Como Comunidad de la Ascensión,” el Comité de Finanzas me ha pedido a que invite a los feligreses este año a hacer dos regalos de Navidad para la Iglesia de la Ascensión. El primero sería un regalo monetario de $250-$500 – si puede proveer uno, pero cualquier donación adicional será muy agradecida. El segundo regalo es apuntarse en el sistema automático de dar donaciones conocido como Faith Direct (Fe directa – véase el sitio web de Faith Direct – el código de la Iglesia de la Ascensión es “NY 588”). In January, Ascension will be be expanding our pres-ence on social media, via a new communications and engagement strategy, in order to engage with, and expand our presence in the community, and in hopes of creating more light and positivity in the world. The platforms will include the website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Volunteers will be needed to broadcast events, campaigns and photographs. More in the coming weeks.

Choral Vespers for Epiphany will be celebrat-ed Sunday, January 7, at 4:00PM at Corpus Christi Church, 529 W. 121st, Manhattan. The preacher will be Father Rafferty, pastor emeritus of Corpus Christi and currently in residence here at Ascension. A free will offering will be taken up at the service, and all are invited.

Update on Puerto Rico Fundraiser
We raised $12,700 for the fundraiser, which was sent to 2 different parishes in Puerto Rico. The first parish has done shopping for 40 families as of now.
